Pinto is absolutely more valuable than Brannstrom. Norris clearly cant be relied upon. Center ice is way more important than a bottom pair D man. The only player they can get rid of is Joseph here unfortunately. 2 goals for Paul BTW
I disagree in the short term. Overall, yea I think (know) Pinto is more valuable but to lose Brannstom now would leave a big hole in the bottom pair.

IF Norris is back in a week or so, I think we can handle having Greig as 3C without losing much of anything. I am a believer in Greig obviously but the drop (if any) from Greig to Pinto is far less than the drop from Branny to whoever would replace him.

In the end I think it would be short sighted to lose Brannstrom to fit in Pinto now.

Exactly, this is not a Pinto vs Brannstrom situation, it's a dropoff-from-missing-Pinto vs dropoff-from-missing-Brannstrom situation. So it's more Greig + Brannstrom vs Pinto + Kleven, also knowing that Brannstrom would be lost but Pinto would still be under control and signed the moment salary cap opens due to big injury.

Having Pinto wait till a big injury hits (and it always seems to hit) is an ace in the hole. I don't mind him waiting as long as the rest of the team (Norris included obviously) is healthy.

I think we will find the hard way that the centre position is the most important
I can only imagine how bad we are going to be if Stu gets injured

That doesn't help the Senators though, because they would have to be compliant when Norris returns. Let's say Norris won't play for a week, and Pinto signs at 2 years 2.XXM. All that having Norris on LTIR for a week means is that they have 7 more days until they have to pull the trigger on the same trade that they already had lined up.

Assuming Dorion is being honest, clearing cap is already resolved. They have some level of confidence that they can make a trade. The issue is that Pinto and the Senators don't agree on what his AAV should be. LTIR over a short period of time is irrelevant to all that.

LTIR only becomes relevant if Norris is going to be out for the entire regular season, or at least long enough that they think they can gamble on another player whose cap hit is enough to cover Pinto becoming eligible for LTIR by the time Norris has to be activated.
Placing a player on LTIR means he will miss at least 10 games. The only way having a player on LTIR clears cap space is if he's out for the entire regular season because as soon as he comes back, they will once again not be cap compliant unless they made the room in the meantime. Placing him on LTIR for the 10 games buys them some time to clear some cap space.

Do LTIR players usually travel with the team?
He's currently on IR, not LTIR.

Ok, so hire a witch doctor to heal Josh's shoulder, sign Pinto to 1.7, and get ready for emergency callups from the likes of Crookshank, Highmore, Sokolov and Reinhardt upfront, Guénette, JBD, Larson and Heatherton on the backend.

Tbh, that doesn't sound that bad, though I'd rather find a way to fit Smejkal in and push out Kelly if at all possible.

Two one year deals, second in the drawer

Year 1 @ 1.4, signing bonus of whatever is allowed, I think it's 10% of the contract?

Year 2 @ 2.7, whatever signing bonus is allowable

This his him the same two year total as Frost, who outscored him a dozen pts or so, and gives him a higher QO going into the next round of negotiations to add some leverage to him down the road. He also gets enough that he sees a raise even in year one.
Because he only has one year in the NHL (he only played 5 games in 2021/22 so it doesn't count) so his new contract will still be ELC. The maximum signing bonus he can receive is $92,500. I doubt he would sign for 1.4 + 92,500. If they go with a 20 player roster, then they can offer 1.7 + that bonus. If he still won't accept, then PD has to either clear cap space, be willing to have him sit out for 1 season or trade him. I also don't see him signing a one year deal regardless of what they promise him. What if he gets injured again? Would they still honor it? I can't blame him for not wanting to go down that road.

All sorts of wrong info in there.

I ask b/c some dude on the postgame show said exactly that…

Yes. Dreger said he's heard that Norris was feeling the shoulder/bothered by it as soon as he started skating this summer. It also sounds like the Sens haven't sent him to see a specialist about it yet, so they have no real idea whether there's a structural issue or not.

Sounds like they've got it all under control.

Wonder if we're trying to get a deal for another C before we announce to the world that he needs surgery again.

We've had rumours that we're looking at Pageau and Laughton recently when we already have too many C.

That makes no sense though, he would be LTIRed already and Pinto would be signed

Just LTIR him already. Need Pinto a player they can trust in the lineup.

Why would they do this when they have Pinto?!.......

Grieg is ready btw. Him in the 3 spot and Pinto in the 2 I'd enough.

Or if he keeps coughing up the puck in front of our net!

Assistant POHO Garrioch says he's probably playing this weekend.

When the Senators skate Friday, all eyes will be on centre Josh Norris to see if he’ll be ready to make his season debut this weekend. The belief is that could happen as early as Saturday, or Sunday at the latest, if all goes well.

No thanks. If he's ready to return sooner, we will have to wait ten games instead of having him now. Pinto has to get done another way.

I agree no offense to Pinto, but if I have to pick between Norris and Pinto I rather have a 35 goal scorer in the lineup over a 3rd line player

The belief was that he would play in the preseason and for sure by the start of the regular season.

Everybody has to believe in something. I believe I'll have another beer.
Just because they put him in a game doesn't mean he's healthy. He's going to play soon because they need clarity about what to do with him. If he needs another procedure and goes on LTIR they no longer need to make a trade.
