True. Although Pettersson played a full season in the NHL in his D2 and was a similar size I think.

I though Pods came before the deadline?
He was sent down on Friday (TDL) and officially called-up Saturday. So, presumably, yes, he is one of the four.

I don't think it's 10 games in his situation. Boeser burned his ELC year in 16-17 playing only 9 games.

It depends on the age when they signed. They can’t turn 20 before Sep 15th of the signing year or it doesn’t matter. So for college players, it usually doesn’t matter as they can’t sign until they’re ready to come play and often that’s not until at least the year they turn 20. Boeser had already turned 20 when he signed, and Quinn turned 20 later that year when he signed so both burned a year from 9 and 5 games respectively. Lekkerimaki signed last year, and doesn’t turn 20 until the summer so his contract is still able to slide

Not all top line wingers are the same though, Boeser is good, but Guentzel is better…if you can get Guentzel for free and get some prime assets for Boeser, why wouldn’t you? Plus, this isn’t a “must trade Boeser at all costs”, its more of a gauge the value of Boeser because you’re going to have to pony up for him after next year and that might not be palatable, so it might be better to move on early at his highest value.

Yes, this is the proactive type of thinking the team needs and I'm sure Allvin is looking at. It's either Boeser or Garland that will have to go in order to make way for new players. Boeser has gotten a lot of goals but he is also a product of playing with good players. How much is he going to cost after a 40 goal season? He could probably get $8+ million if he hits ufa. You can't just keep re-signing the same players for more money and hope to get any better.

He will be 30 when he start his new contract next year. Boeser is about two and half years younger. Signing Guentzel to a 6 or 7 year contracts takes him to 36 or 37 which is not ideal tbh. The only free agents I would personally sign long term are ones that are younger like Hanifin and Forsling who would have been 27 and 28 when there new contracts kick in.
He’s still a better line driver than Boeser. I think we can improve the depth if we can get Guentzel and get assets for Boeser and use them to get another top6 guy.

I don't want to derail this thread but we have no clue of how good of player driver he is because he has been tied to Crosbys hip his whole career. I think he is great offensive player but he is also an awful defensive player Crosby has been covering up his defensive play his whole career.

Yea, I’m not sure if signing Guentzel is a good idea, but that shouldn’t change the fact that a Boeser deal should be explored in the offseason, both because he’d be at peak value and because I’m not sure if he’s the type of player you want to commit to past 30. Though that will also depend on his demands. And having Lekkerimaki as a potential replacement down the line also helps as the team might only need a short term replacement.

this is devoid of logic.

you want to trade a player, who's had success here, to then sign a FA who could maybe contribute like Boeser ?

Yeah we should move this to another thread.

Exactly. I'm not 100% sure what the best course of action is but certainly it's something you have to look long and hard at. Not just dismiss out of hand. As you say Boeser will be looking for a retirement type deal most likely. He'll be 28 and could maybe be a player a franchise could build around. We already have a number of core players so that money may be better distributed with a more focalized shorter contract or a cheaper player, which would give us some much needed flexibility. Unless maybe he really wants to be in Van and signs a decent 4-5 year deal. Paying Miller until he's 36 or whatever is proving to be a great compromise. We can't do that with everybody though.

We also just signed Petey long term so we need to be looking at a solution for his wing as well. Does that take priority over Boeser? I would certainly lean that way and strongly consider the options there.

No it’s not. The logic would be that you trade a guy at peak value, gain assets, then sign a better player for free. You get both the assets and an upgrade. And Boeser is having success this year but he’s unlikely to be this productive again. He’s a fairly limited player despite his scoring touch.

Yeah nobody is saying we should give away Boeser for free.

I think we can trade him away, sign Guentzel and sign a cheaper 2 year older vet as a stop gap for Lekk.

Use the Boeser assets at the deadline and get like Buch with retention.

Looking at the Canucks situation on Cap Friendly can be both encouraging and then terrifying at the same time. Upwards of 10 free agents, and not enough room to sign many of them.

Canucks are going to have to force-feed a 'youth movement' next season. And it will be intriguing to see how 'close' Lekerimakki is to the NHL.

I hope the Canucks leverage the excuse that they have veteran AHL guys who deserve an extended look in the NHL, and start Lekkerimaki in the AHL no matter how great he looks in training camp
See how guys like Bains/Karlsson/Sasson/Räty look first, even if Lekkerimaki is scoring hattricks in exhibition.
Leverage the Abbotsford team at every possible juncture.

I do wonder if it’s a good idea for Lekk to go to the AHL, feels like it’s too risky considering how much of a goon league it is. Wonder if it’s better for Lekk development wise to have a good playoffs in the SHL and then world championship and then a good off season to get stronger and faster while Ryan Johnson beefs up the AHL roster with some MMA guys on skates for next season.

Two things, they shouldn’t be competing for the same spots. Also, you always reward the guys who are doing the best you don’t just had any player anything.

It's baffling how even a year where he's literally upped his game in every facet to the point he's out their defending leads that people still think the grass is greener somewhere else.

Like it actually pisses me off that a team with our record and his obvious elite skill that people say oh he's a product of someone else or sell high. What winning team trades their young ppg 40 goal scorer who's only making 6 million or constantly sells him short?
It's idiotic, and similar to the doofs who wanted to trade Quinn a couple years ago, or JT last year.
I seriously question the thought process of these people or at least their hockey knowledge

I am pretty certain about half of the HFCanucks posters are actually dogs with bones in their mouths crossing a bridge over a reflective pool of water.

There is a rationale behind trading Boeser and it’s not because he sucks.

I understand your argument. But I disagree with the logic. The move trades a productive player currently outperforming his contract. It risks messing up locker room chemistry just so we can free up cap space to partially offset signing a 29-year old to a long term contract that will age poorly. And all of that for the hope of a mid-to-late 1st pick to pan out (because what other kind of team would want Boeser?) and the added hope that Guenztel will outscore Boeser and perhaps outperform his contract for the first few years?

It just doesn't add up. Worst comes to worst, Boeser prices himself off the team next year and we use him as a self-rental for next year's playoffs. But why saddle the team with a contract that won't age well for a potential upgrade in offense? Boosting your offense is the kind of thing you do at TDL with an expiring contract if it looks like a year you could go deep. There's no need to go full-Leafs with our salary structure and a far better use of our cap would be to fill out our blue line with a quality addition and make smart short term bets on depth like we did last summer.

Eh I want to trade Boeser because I think his inability to press due to skating and motor doesn’t work in our system, and that he’d probably get a decent return due to his counting stats but he’s shooting 20%.

I would not, however, then go and sign Guentzel to a bad contract.
