The guy's turning 27 next week. I wish I were 27, but that does not qualify as young when you're an athlete.

I was joking. We had posters who would say he was still young and had time to grow his game when he was 24,25,26 so I was keeping the tradition alive. Maybe he will figure it out at 30, he still got time. :)

Drouin's effort level was very low, he didn't look like a guy that was excited to come back and play, I saw the same guy that I have now seen play for 5 years with the habs.
Total con man.............says what we want to hear, and poof, goes out and does nothing............year in and year out. The defenders have all left the building, and no one would blame them.

We are stuck with him for one more year unless he is miraculously dealt tomorrow. Armia and Dvorak are two more that are similar to Drouin in the way they play, all three have the talent to be so much more but oh well.

The biannual Drouin PR blitz is something you can set your watch to. Every August and every March there is some soft-ball puff piece on Drouin being determined and driven to achieve his boundless potential.

Who is dumb enough to take them on though?

No one's dumb if a need is fulfilled. Especially in Hoffman's case, his shot and offensive IQ are well known, his obvious shortcomings too, pretty sure a team in need of offense would take a shot, but he wouldn't garner that much at full salary.

Drouin is gutless, though, can't wait til he's gone.

I'd do Drouin + 7th, for a 7th, just to get rid of him
He’s gonna be gone either way, I think we’ll get a lil something something for him, he’s gonna be playing for a contract next season after all.. We might get more than we think for him.

He's a buy-out candidate. We're not getting anything for him. He's barely played hockey last 3 years. He's averaged 35 games a season!

The buy-out isn't bad: $1,833,334m over 2 years.

That saves us $3,666,666m on the cap next year. While it adds to the cap the following year, Byron's $3,4m is off the books that year.

On top of that Alzner's cap hit drops by about $1,1m starting next year too ($833,333 over 2 years now). We absolutely have the room to do it.

Alzner's and Drouin's buy-outs would expire at the same time 2 years from now, which opens up $2,6m. Hoffman's $4,5m contract also ends that summer. It works out.

It's important that we get out of being an LTIR team. ELC contracts with rookie bonuses & LTIR don't mix.

Saving $3,666,666m next year & opening up a contract spot is more valuable than whatever we can get for him, which is not much.

I'm sure HuGo will let him sit to keep him healthy so they can buy him out, because you can't buy out injured players. I expect we've seen the last of Drouin in a Montreal uniform.

I agree that nobody is trading for him but I also think the club isn't going anywhere next season so having him on the cap next year at $5.5M is better than dealing with $1.8M dead cap in 23-24. If the team did buy him out I wouldn't consider it a problem. I could just see him playing it out.

I think down the road, two seasons from now, we end up buying out David Savard.

You know, I never thought of buying him out this summer. Are the Habs really in a cap crunch for next year?

Wrist injuries can kill a career. I don’t think we need to hate Drouin for that… but (and I may be very out of line on this; a risk I’m willing to take) his disappearing act last year was the final straw for me. That was when I knew with certainty that this guy isn’t going to end his contract with the Habs.

I respect and understand mental health is no different than physical health but his total disappearance, with nary a word from anybody, told me it wasn’t what they said it was. Not a comment, not a recorded message, not a release, nothing. No one on the team or the club had any word about him. No “let’s do it for Drou”, nothing. Nothing during the most exciting and encouraging playoff campaign in the last nearly thirty years!

There are only a handful of situations where someone is not allowed contact with the outside world for a pre-determined span of time. I won’t speculate but it was rather clear to me anyway that the story (sleeplessness and anxiety) wasn’t the story.

His being injury prone is unfortunate and a wholly distinct topic/issue. I’d love to see him play the final stretch with the Habs and allow the MSL effect to rub off on the guy… in an ideal world he plays for us next year and is sold for something at the trade deadline. Because not even in an ideal world is this guy part of the solution.

What a bitterly disappointing trade and acquisition. On the Habs Reddit people to this day argue that it was a good trade. Meanwhile Sergachev would be our No. 1 (that’s how bad our D is) and his team kicked our team’s butt in the Finals to boot. Bergevin fans loved to brag about “winning trades”, but they forget about this one.

We'll have to see what contracts they can unload in the off-season. Moving Petry without taking on a similar large contract would help a lot.

I'm pretty sure HuGo do not want to be in LTIR next season, which is a big problem if we have both Weber and Price on IR.

But, buying out Drouin is a good possibility. I have to think they're reviewing that

Based on Hughes statements I think he has the framework for a Petry deal (rumours are Detroit which makes sense for Petry to be happy with) and if Arizona was a no on the Weber deal, there's going to be other teams willing to take him (hi Toronto)

If we trade no contracts (Petry, Armia, etc), and don't use LTIR on Weber then our cap hit is already at $79.77m for next year. And that only includes 3 signed defenseman: Petry, Savard, Edmundson, (Romanov is an RFA), and 11 forwards.

Cap hit is expected to go up $1m to $82,5m, but this year we were penalized over $500,000 for rookie bonus overages meaning our cap of $81,5m was reduced to $80,902m for this year. I expect that to happen again, which means our max cap will probably be around $81,5m.

Leaving us $1,7m to sign Romanov, 3 other D & 4 forwards.

It's dire.

Next year, depending on how he plays under MSL, I bet we could at least trade him for a 7th or nothing. Some team may take him with the thoughts of maybe extending him at 5x$2M or something. Drouin is not worth his current cap, but I think he is an NHL player.

Some more negative takes on Drouin centre on the fact that he can only barely produce 0.5ppg while being unreliable defensively, a physical marshmallow puff, and with ample TOI. Basically he’s not really an NHLer according to them.

Have the analytics guys done any isolation analysis on Drouin? What’s his “WAR”?
