Kings News: Jonathan Bernier to TML for Matt Frattin, Ben Scrivens, & 2nd ('14 or '15) (pst#276)

La wins this trade easily.... Bernier is a good goaltender but frattin will pay dividends on a third line and scrib is an affordable backup. Adding the second pick was great too! LA keeps stocking up.

Bernier was going to ask for considerable money as a free agent, moving him now makes the leafs negotiate... It will be Big money for an inexperienced player.

Mathew Barry is off his meds again...he HATES THIS DEAL NOW!

Meh, it is like Lombardi said, you just can't get that type of fair value for a goaltender like Bernier. We would inevitably lose the deal over time in all likeliness. We all know what Bernier is capable of. In a few years, it probably won't look that great on paper, depending on the 2nd, but overall it took care of like 3/4 of the entire team's needs in one shot, with one asset.

This was a pretty important deal to solidify the roster. If we can sign Holloway and Scuderi, we'd be looking very pretty heading into next season. This single deal erased a lot of our worries and is ideal for us in the moment. Not a whole lot to complain about.

He got much more than what most were expecting, even though they like to backtrack and rag on it now that it is done.

I wouldn't necessarily say that's the case. I was reluctant on the deal because I believed all the butt hurt Philly fans. I knew we had Slava and I was very very confident he'd be better than Jack. I think the Richards trade was fairly(?) well received as well. I know some thought it was too much/were high on Schenn but I thought neither. Hell, I'm STILL not high on Schenn.

Yup.

I do both trades again without hesitation.

Well, maybe they should be accustomed to Slava Voynov by now. ;) But you should enjoy what Frats brings.

I'm eager to see him play.

That's good news, actually. Barry has the IQ of a grapefruit.

An insult to grapefruits everywhere

Lol. Main board, of course, a lot of Leafs fans saying Frattin and Scrivens were just spare parts on the Leafs.

The real Leaf fans are telling you how good Frattin is, and how he will be missed. Both teams win because we addressed issues of concern while keeping our teams intact. Good luck next season, I may have to watch a couple more Kings games because of Frattin. :)

My only issue with this trade is if the Kings try Frattin as a 2nd line player, with nothing else added.

If the Kings left wings next season are Brown-Frattin-King-Clifford-Pearson I am not sure we have added enough to our weakest position to beat Chicago. If they add another left wing in UFA or trade and with the addition of Frattin, suddenly the Kings look capable of running the three scoring lines needed to win a championship.

They just don't have the $$ to add anyone in the off-season. People say Matt Read and I keep saying it doesn't make sense for us because we'd lose him after next season anyways.

This. Comon Herbs you know the deal with the Capped NHL, everyone is going to have holes. Its impossible not to. For Chicago its 2nd line center, Bos high end scorer/sniper, NYR depth, Pitts defense/goaltending, Blues 1st line center.

For the Kings its 2nd line left wing. In the grand scheme of things that is pretty good. Especially if VV/DD score as they can, it makes up for it.

I was hoping the Kings would package Bernier with additional prospects/picks to get a better return (a young LW with more high-end skill and goal scoring prowess).

That being said, I do like Frattin a lot as a player and he definitely "fits" the Kings. I basically see him as a replacement for (and an upgrade over) Dustin Penner, where he can bounce back and forth between the 2nd and 3rd lines depending on how he's playing. At the end of the day, he's a solid hockey player who improves depth and pushes some of the other forwards like Dwight King down to lower lines or out of the lineup.

With the cap coming down and the Kings best trade-able asset in Bernier gone, it looks like the goal scoring LW is going to have to come from within in the form of Toffoli or Pearson. And it definitely could as both have shown promise as young players, so the Kings are in a pretty good position. I'd still like to see a guy like Viktor Stalberg added up front if Dean can find a way to make the numbers work.

Not a huge fan of Scrivens but whatever. Glad to pick up a 2nd round pick.

Signing Regher for $3 million a year was a big mistake IMO especially with the way he played. He's too slow for today's NHL and he's on his last legs, a shell of himself. Even if Mitchell never comes back, I'd much rather have re-signed Scuderi and gone into next season with Doughty, Voynov, Scuderi, Ellerby, Martinez, and Muzzin. You can hope you get Mitchell back or make a deal for a veteran rental at the deadline if you need to.

Locking in Regher at $3 million a year for the next two years is an utter waste of cap space especially considering the cap squeeze we are in.

Here's the team with the remaining 6 RFAs given 10% raises (in red) with some rounded up and down numbers. Capgeek has the Leafs taking back half of Frattin's salary ($462,500), I've rounded his salary up to 463k.

Not much space left to sign a major free agent, especially our own (Scuds). I wonder if quietly Dean is hoping Martinez, Ellerby or someone gets an offer sheet.

In a cap controlled NHL, Dean did very well. Again, it could have been a 2nd rounder ONLY.

Frattin's contract situation vs. Read's contract situation had everything to do with that decision. We live in a Cap world. Plus a (almost) free goaltender and the 2nd rounder. Read may be a good player, but he's not as much of a Sutter-Type guy as Frattin and he can't cure the Kings cap problems.

Well, that, + 500K.

:naughty:

Exactly. We got a piece that fitted the team and the cap. Now we make a few more signings and we will be be golden.

We need to trade Fraser ($825,000), King ($750,000), Martinez ($810,000) and Ellerby ($770,000) for draft picks.
After this we are going to have $5,063.000 to sign Holloway and Scuderi.

Scuderi!! thats not enough for him.

Someone has to go and we still won't have any money left for Holloway. Bud is becoming a distant dream.

Well that's fine, but you still have to have 23 players on your roster. Signing those two guys replaces two of them and leaves you about $1M if you're lucky for two more contracts, so Campbell & Cliche?

Scuderi ($2.75M ?)
Holloway ($1.15M ?)
Campbell ($538K ?)
Cliche ($538K ?)

Well some of us Philly fans were not butt hurt! As for Brayden Schenn, I am not sold on him. I think he has the tools but the jury is out on the toolbox. He also needs to learn how to hit without getting suspended.

Some of you guys are absolutely crazy in what you think this team will look like next season.

The overwhelming majority of Flyers fans had nothing but bad things to say about Carter. Lazy, streaking, floater, only scores in blowouts, isn't there when it matters, bad attitude, etc. It was utterly ****ing ridiculous and most Flyer fans are still little ****ing babies when Carter comes up. The guy might have had his issues in Philly at times but he's a hell of a player and it seems that the opinion most give couldn't be farther from what Carter is today. They can't blame their system, coaches, or anything else. It's all Carter's fault.

Getting Voracek alone for Carter worked out well for Philly. Adding Couturier and Cousins makes it sweeter.
Same goes for the Richards deal. Simmonds + 2nd would have been nice return. Getting Schenn means a very good trade.

Dont get all the Holmgren hate. Even Bryzgalov has a winning record in Philly: 52 wins in 99 games. His .525 gets you in the playoffs the last 2 years. 208-149 lifetime. .582

We got 3 assets for one asset and the Leafs also retained $500k. What more could you want from this deal. There may have been better offers out there but they didn't make sense salary/roster wise.

I got no problem with this deal, good for both clubs.

We have done well in the 2nd round the past and I am sure we can cash in on this one or maybe parlay it at the deadline for some help in hopes of winning another Cup.

You have to keep stocking the cupboard to have the ammo necessary to take a shot.

I think Voracek and a later first would have been a more fair trade for Carter. But the way Voracek can play in a no defense system makes the trade look absolutely stacked since you add in Couts as well.

As for Richards for Simmonds and a 2nd, that would NEVER happen. The deal was pretty fair for both teams. Kings got a 2nd line center who plays both ends of the ice, which is exactly what the team needed. We got a cup from it. Philly got a blue chip prospect, a very good 3rd liner who can play up a line since defense isn't required, and a pick.

Wow, you mean to tell me that some kings fans don't like this trade??? lol.
This trade is a robbery as far as I'm concerned. I haven't read many posts so, have no idea who(m), but feel free to name names. :sarcasm:

Robbery? I wouldn't call it robbery but Dean had his hands tied. It's the best deal he could've gotten but remember Frattin had 7 goals last year lol, wouldn't go as far as calling it robbery.
