Actually it's Matt Frattin ... a 2nd Rnd Pick ... AND $500,000 in CAP SPACE to use towards Scuderi or ?

Scrivens should be more than a serviceable backup to Quick until Jones can assume that position, so really the only loss in the trade is the higher quality of Bernier's play should the back up have to assume the starter roll for any extended period of time, if you look at it that way, Dean just made one hell of a Hockey Deal. :handclap:

But then I've never been one of those BERNIER > QUICK types around here ;)
so frankly while I wish Bernier the best in his new situation, I'm glad we got what we did before Bernier REALLY had to be tested and maybe might have FAILED ? what then ? at least he held or improved his value high enough to warrant this deal while frankly every team out there knew we weren't dealing from a position of too great a strength considering if Bernier would have been offer sheeted all we MAYBE would have ended up with is a SECOND ... not Matt Frattin, AND a Decent cheap Back-up Goalie, AND a 2nd AND $500,000 in CAP Space relief.

Frankly I can't see why ANYONE could hate this trade from our side ? :shakehead

As long as Quick is our goalie, a guy like Jones will eventually be traded. You don't groom a guy like Jones to be a backup-that's what veteran goaltenders are for. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised to see Scrivens getting traded for a pick as well.

Wow, you mean to tell me that some kings fans don't like this trade??? lol.
This trade is a robbery as far as I'm concerned. I haven't read many posts so, have no idea who(m), but feel free to name names. :sarcasm:

Oh ? and just what type of NHL Goalie is Jones going to be ?

WE DON'T KNOW ... Period.

It's obvious from comments and this trade that Dean nor the Kings Mngmnt. thought Jones was ready YET to even be a BACK UP in the NHL, let alone anything more than that ... so let's hold off and at least let him get 1 NHL game under his belt before we claim he's being groomed to be ANYTHING just yet. ;)

^Exactly, that last line.

Dean made a great move and I'm glad he's out East.

My only issue with this trade is if the Kings try Frattin as a 2nd line player, with nothing else added.

If the Kings left wings next season are Brown-Frattin-King-Clifford-Pearson I am not sure we have added enough to our weakest position to beat Chicago. If they add another left wing in UFA or trade and with the addition of Frattin, suddenly the Kings look capable of running the three scoring lines needed to win a championship.

The same people that will call for Scrivens during next year's playoffs when Quick gives up a softie ;)

Well, you can say that about any goalie. Bottom line is, I'd like to keep Jones down in manchester as long as we can. And hopefully, he can put up great numbers much like Bernier did, and then eventually trade him away for picks and/or prospects.

I know you're joking but it will actually be nice to not have any debate in goal. I LOVED Bernier and wish he got more ice time but it is what is is. I have some issues with Scrivens game (balance and his glove hand positioning) but he's nothing more than a backup. Anyone legitimately calling for Scrivens to start over Quick when it matters should be tarred and feathered. Or forced to be a Sharks fan.

RH63,

I like the trade, but robbery? Come on, lets not be ridiculous. Both teams addressed weaknesses by dealing from an area of strength, isn't that what trades are all about?

Surprised the 2nd is next year. O well.

Hope Frattin turns out well, his offense vanished this last season when he came back from injury.

He is a very young player, I just don't see the kid being a top six player.

But he could turn out to be a dynamite bottom six, like Clifford should be.

Getting a cheap backup Goalie was good. Jones has to pick it up now.

Not me. We actually don't have a 2nd round pick next year or the year after because of the Regehr trade. We'll basically be getting one of those back.

15 - 20 games max probably. Quick is a workhorse and he thrives under a heavy load.

They just don't have the $$ to add anyone in the off-season. People say Matt Read and I keep saying it doesn't make sense for us because we'd lose him after next season anyways.

Exactly. Pointed this out earlier.

What exactly were the conditions again on the pick? My site to track draft picks hasn't updated it yet. It's just Toronto's choice, right? At least I think that's what I saw.

Here's how I break it down. To me, Bernier is worth a 2nd and a 3rd. We got Frattin, who I think is about a 2nd and a 5th. Scrivens, is worth a 3rd imo, and we got a 2nd. So, the way I see it, we got something close to three 2nd picks for Bernier. Maybe, not a robbery per se, but a very good deal nonetheless.

Look this is one of those rare trades you can evaluate from the Kings POV pretty easily.

If every GM involved in this just said sorry Deano, not going to give you anything of value for a guy I can give an offer sheet you probably can't match without making huge lineup adjustments, The best the Kings do for JB45 is a middle to late 2nd rounder in '14.

Instead they get a Sutter-Type young player in a contract year under team control for more than this season, a serviceable backup G virtually for free (with the $500k take back) and ultimately only adding $1M to the cap & that 2nd rounder anyway.

All under the pressure of every GM in the known world knowing the Kings HAD to trade JB45. I'm completely impressed with Deano on this one.

Bottomline, Trading goalies is a tough business, especially back up goalies with All-Star potential. Dean did great! If we can eventually keep Scuderi, even better and Frattin can still make this deal VERY great.

IMO Toronto won this trade easily. But i dont think its deans fault. I think we got the most we could and added a lot of under the radar value that will make this team better. I simply think bernier is worth a lot more then teams are willing to pay. Bernier might end up being the mvp on the leafs for many years. And when we look back on this 10 years from now it will look like a lopsided trade. But it is what it is and kudos to dean for being creative and milking them for all that u can. Its just a shame that due to other goalie trades and the current perception of goalie value right now that this is all u can get.
I believe this will be the goalie trade that will end up increasing goalie value from here on out.

?

the difference between Bernier and Scrivens is a galaxy...and not a nearby galaxy.

Whatever. We weren't going to be able to keep him anyway. Got something good in return, a lot more than what was being said at the start of this season.

Seriously. Look at every goalie trade post-lockout and tell me what you see. If you look at it from that perspective, this looks like highway robbery.

Now I think it's a great hockey trade for both teams, but when goaltenders in similar situations fetch less (sometimes, far less), you have to think DL did the best he could with an RFA with limited games under his belt. I'm not overwhelmed with the return, but this is just a good trade for TOR and us.

Personally, I was hoping for Matt Read out of Philly instead of Frattin. That kid is dynamite, and I can see him in the top 6 without question.

In a cap controlled NHL, Dean did very well. Again, it could have been a 2nd rounder ONLY.

Frattin's contract situation vs. Read's contract situation had everything to do with that decision. We live in a Cap world. Plus a (almost) free goaltender and the 2nd rounder. Read may be a good player, but he's not as much of a Sutter-Type guy as Frattin and he can't cure the Kings cap problems.

Lol. Main board, of course, a lot of Leafs fans saying Frattin and Scrivens were just spare parts on the Leafs.

They got the most talented player in the deal, no question. Kings got what they needed and are further along as a franchise, so TML fans can enjoy him, Kings fans are smart enough to know this deal was as much of an off-ice deal than an on-ice one and can hopefully help them stay cap flexible.

Most people said LA got hosed in the Richards trade. And the Carter trade.

"Jack Johnson isn't replaceable! Puck moving defensemen are a rare commodity in today's NHL!!!111!!!!"

I wouldn't necessarily say that's the case. I was reluctant on the deal because I believed all the butt hurt Philly fans. I knew we had Slava and I was very very confident he'd be better than Jack. I think the Richards trade was fairly(?) well received as well. I know some thought it was too much/were high on Schenn but I thought neither. Hell, I'm STILL not high on Schenn.
