If there was a better deal out there for all the complainers don't you think DL would have taken it? Toronto could have got Bernier cheaper by waiting and giving him an offer sheet. You can't judge this trade a few hours after its completion.

Can another team offer sheet Bernier still?

Yes, but that's Toronto's problem to deal with now.

I'd imagine a part of the deal though was to at least get a ballpark idea on what Bernier wanted in a deal. It was according to this article on TSN:

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=426131

Bernier, 24, is eligible to become a restricted free agent but Bernier's agent Pat Brisson has already spoken with Leafs GM Dave Nonis and the two plan on engaging in contract talks this week.

Dean said that all the news on Mitchell the past couple of weeks has been positive. Today is a great day!

@Mirtle: Frattin and Scrivens make combined $1.54-million next season but cost Kings just $1.04-million w/ Leafs retaining salary. Smart by Lombardi.

No matter where you pencil Frattin in, at the very least, the Kings have added another winger to their offense who is capable of putting the puck in the net from time to time, at least with a bit more consistency than the likes of King, Clifford, Nolan, Richardson, Fraser, etc.

There is an opportunity to win a spot as the #2 or #3 LW on the Kings' roster, depending on what alignment the Kings wish to go with their lineup. Considering what other goalies with potential were dealt for, the Kings get what I deem to be more than just fair market value. They recoup a 2nd round pick that was lost in the Regehr trade, they gain some cap relief, and they don't have to dip into free agency to find a backup for Jonathan Quick. This trade addresses a lot for the team for the immediate future and down the road.

I really, really hope that this deal allows the Kings to go after both Holloway AND Scuderi.

Seems like a solid deal. A good hockey deal. The names have been talked about for some time and hope it works out for both teams. I thought JB would be combined with other assets (Amart, King, picks), but I'm glad DL kept those for another move (possibly at the draft).

I hate this trade. We should have traded Bernier to Pittsburgh for Malkin and a 1st.

:sarcasm:

I love this place.

Something like this perhaps:

FORWARDS
Dustin Brown ($3.175m) / Anze Kopitar ($6.800m) / Justin Williams ($3.650m)
Bud Holloway ($1.250m) / Mike Richards ($5.750m) / Jeff Carter ($5.273m)
Matt Frattin ($0.925m) / Jarret Stoll ($3.250m) / Tyler Toffoli ($0.870m)
Kyle Clifford ($0.900m) / Trevor Lewis ($0.850m) / Jordan Nolan ($0.600m)
Dwight King ($0.750m) / Colin Fraser ($0.825m) /
DEFENSEMEN
Drew Doughty ($7.000m) / Robyn Regehr ($3.000m)
Slava Voynov ($4.167m) / Rob Scuderi ($3.500m)
Matt Greene ($2.950m) / Jake Muzzin ($0.700m)
Alec Martinez ($0.800m) /
GOALTENDERS
Jonathan Quick ($5.800m)
Ben Scrivens ($0.613m)
OTHER
Buyout: Willie Mitchell ($0.000m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $63,396,894; BONUSES: $135,000
CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $1,038,106

I don't think injured players can be bought out and if he's healthy Mitchell is going nowhere. LA could still sign Scuderi to around $3.5M a season and be just under the cap but would likely only be able to carry 22 players to start the season

Can someone tell me about his style of play? Weaknesses? strengths? Thanks

The shootout is the weakest aspect of his game, he doesn't have Quick's athleticism, flexibility, or speed (however, that is not to say he is lacking in any of those categories, just that they aren't like Quick's). But he is one of the most technically sound goaltenders in the league, and is absolute money in games. He is always ridiculously calm, to the point where you don't even think he cares because he makes it look so easy, and he plays with swagger. He is unphased by bad goals and consistent, and he plays the puck very well.

Does anyone have that gif with Bernier and Crawford in the playoffs where Bernier is challenging him? It is a north south view down the ice?

Hey Kings fans just wanted to mention that starting next season Ben Scrivens is on a 1 way contract, so if they wanted to send him to the AHL he needs to clear waivers. Last summer Scrivens signed a 2 year/ 2 way contract and only for the 2012-2013 season he could have been sent to the AHL without clearing waivers. So that part of his contract has now finished.

Can't see us wanting to, if we did then we wouldn't have acquired him and would have just used Jones. He's with the Kings for better or worse.

Leafs fan here.

You guys are going to love Frattin. The guy is pure heart and soul and works his ass off. He's built like a truck, only 6 ft tall but he weighs 210 lbs and hits hard. His shot is unreal, the guy was a goal scoring machine in college and the AHL, and was the Marlies best player in their Calder Cup run last year before he got injured. If the Kings use him on the PP on the half-wall like Stamkos, or put him with a solid playmaker, you guys will definitely reap the rewards.

Frattin is a very determined player and worked hard to get where he is. He screwed up in college by getting a DUI and being arrested for causing trouble while being intoxicated. He lost his scholarship and had to leave the school for a bit. At that point, Frattin could've just signed a contract with the Marlies and taken the easy way out. Instead, Frattin went back home to Alberta, and worked a hard labour construction job for a year, making back the money he needed to go back to college. He went back, carried the team and scored a lot of timely goals, and finished off his degree.

He is a good possession player who will go hard into the dirty areas. Him and Kadri had some good chemistry earlier in the season before he got injured. I think if he's placed with a guy like Kopitar or another solid playmaker it will do wonders for him.

Here's some 'beast' Frattin moments.

Like I said, the guy is built like a truck. I hope he does well with the Kings, imo he suits the style your team plays perfectly.

His potential is to be determined still...some people are convinced he won't be more than a 3rd liner, but I don't think so. His shot is amazing, he's a good skater, and he goes into the dirty areas. With more PP time and offensive opportunities I think he can become a 20-25 goal scorer someday. He looked like he was on track for a great season earlier this year, but then he re-injured his knee and was never given the same opportunities when he finally came back. He looked great for us in the playoffs though.

Reaction from Bernier. This helps with our image on how DL treats his players.

"I was very happy -- Dean is a man of his word," Bernier told ESPN.com. "I felt he would keep it, and he did. All the teams in the mix were great teams, but I have to tell you I'm so happy that it's Toronto."

http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nhl/...-traded-los-angeles-kings-toronto-maple-leafs

SInce MTL was out of the question then TO would be the Laval Quebec kids second choice. Allot of people will overlook the value of what DL has been doing with our players by doing right by the ones that do right by us.

That sort of thing gets around the league and its players like wildfire. Dean is seen as a fair and honest GM which is a rare commodity and players value that sort of thing almost as much as money. Almost.

With our having won the cup and returned to the WCF's and the fact that DL does right by his players I have to believe that it is no wonder why we are a target for UFA's and why our players make such team friendly deals.

Who would have ever thought that we would become a team that would win a cup and remain right there poised to do so again all the while having the kind and amount of depth that will keep us ready to go for the next several years? That along with being seen as one of the top teams to play for in the league.

Lombardi has exceeded his lofty expectations and isn't showing any signs of slowing down.

It truly is a great life to be a Kings fan and while I always hoped we would become the team we are today and believed that we would one day. TODAY is that day and I am freaking thrilled.

So great.

That's not what a 1-way contract means. A 1-way contract means he gets paid the same regardless of whether he's in the NHL or AHL.

Ben Scrivens has played 32 games, but because he's 26, I think THAT is the reason he would have to clear waivers.

Just for clarification, but I could be wrong on him qualifying for waivers.

Hopefully Frattin is at 100% health going into next year because he's going to get a long hard look at his potential to eventually fill a top six void.
