ABSOLUTELY.

People don't treat hurling two tons of steel in each other's general direction with the respect it deserves. I used to bike commute to work every day for 6 years, and the amount of dumb shit I've seen from drivers is absolutely shocking.

We need to be way harsher on drivers. Get caught distracted driving? Automatic 30 day suspension. Even if you don't cause an accident.

And that's to say nothing of the outright hostility some drivers have toward sharing the road with cyclists. Some drivers are reckless/selfish/dumb though they don't actually mean to harm, but some of them are out there intentionally trying to hurt people. And the punishment seems to rarely fit the crime when they do.

The driver made many selfish decisions to get to this situation. He decided that driving home drunk was okay. He decided that him getting to wherever he was going was more important than everyone else's rights to get home. He decided that a minor inconvenience like having to slowdown was not something that he could stand for.

Passing on the shoulder isn't a normal thing to do, drunk driving isn't something that normal people do, that's something a selfish asshole does when they think they're the most important person in the world. For me, that's where my disgust for this guy comes from, it's not blind vigilante justice, it's the fact that this was so easily avoidable.

Didn’t sleep well last night after the speculation. What a shame. Feel so bad for their families.

What the driver who struck them is reported as doing is bordering on being so reckless that an impaired person should understand is going to result in some type of crash. You can’t pass a car in a two car lane who has attempted to move to the middle to pass someone else. The driver is lucky he wasn’t killed himself. Such an awful tragedy.

Normal people don't try to overtake vehicles on the shoulder.

Yeah he’s a POS, no doubt there. I’m all for harsh penalties and making dangerous driving and drunk driving absolutely brutally punishable.

I’m just saying…it makes reflect about some of my own choices in the past that maybe weren’t brilliant and could’ve gone poorly. Not maybe as egregious or reflecting me being a “bad” or “not normal” person like maybe this guy is. But just…a reminder about the fragility of life. Something that just must be brutally searing to the Gaudreau family today. Absolute heartache.

Even this would get you a pretty hefty ticket in Ontario, probably in a few other areas as well.
In the U.S. it depends on state laws, some permit it, others don't. Where I live, it's sort of a grey area. But honestly I wouldn't do it in front of a cop to test the theory. It's 'bad practice' anyway, and I try not to do it.

I think what’s more upsetting is this guy wasn’t patient enough to not overtake. Where was he going that he was in such a rush? I live in a smaller town in the GTA and I see this all the time. Where are you going that’s so important that you need to overtake? You’re gonna get there eventually. It’s just something that could have been avoided.

And still... overtaking on the left? Understandable, legal a lot of the time in a lot of places and if sensibly done is safe enough.

Overtaking on the right? You are committing a crime 95% of the time on a single lane road in basically any country on earth for a reason.

What a terrible tragedy. I can't imagine what that family is going through right now.

With all the modern day technology that protects the driver how about some that stops them from driving intoxicated or on their phones and protects people without a metal cage surrounding them.

So sad. Terrible loss for the CBJ for the Flames for the NHL and more importantly for Johnny Hockey and Matthews family and friends.

Condolences

Saw the rumors rampaging last night and was hoping so badly that they weren't true. Absolutely terrible confirmation news to wake up to.

This is a horrible loss for the hockey community but even more so for his family and loved ones. Just devastating. Rest in peace Johnny and Matthew.

I don't get people like this. You should never be in such a hurry that you risk killing someone.

Normal people don't try to overtake vehicles on the shoulder.
I was lucky enough to be a close proximity witness to a pickup truck roll over accident caused by an SUV trying to speed down the shoulder of a road to bypass traffic congestion when I was in my early 20s. I say I was lucky because no one was hurt, but I got to learn a valuable lesson at an age when I was developing into the kind of driver I would be. I remember that wreck two decades later any time I see someone using the shoulder to try to pass traffic. Sometimes trying to save 5 minutes ends up costing you hours at the very least. A lot of people will routinely run red lights, run stop signs, pass on the shoulder, pass on a double yellow line, speed while weaving in and out of lanes, only give one or two car lengths of space between themselves and the car in front of them despite going 50mph+, etc., and it f***ing pisses me off every time. There are so many common things people do that show how little they consider the people around them. If anything good can come from something like this, it'll be that more people start giving that consideration. No one is an island unto themselves. I don't care how much of a free individual a person thinks they are -- a person's actions can and will impact others.
