How many crimes can one man commit while driving? This guy seems to have tried to go for most of them.

Drunken.
Undertaking on a single lane road. (when other vehicle not turning)
Almost certainly over the speed limit.
Breaking the road limits.

Looking at the streetview there... I mean... he has to have put his wheels in the dirt as there is not even a hard shoulder on that stretch of road and barely big enough for 2 cars anyway.

What he did is dangerous while sober at 10mph... let alone the likely speed he was going.

Has to have veered right across the road to do what he did too.

Awful. Same would have happened to anyone. Gaudreau or a young kid or someone just off the roadside walking their dog...

not really an accident in any way, shape or form. As what was done was criminal to the extreme before anyone got hit.

Whole situation is devastating. He was an all time fav Flame that gave us tons os good memories. Two young kids.. a wife and could only imagine what his parents are going through.

Sad sad day for the hockey world.

Man, did he ever.......that Game 7 OT series winner that knocked off Dallas was one for the ages.

Hopefully his jersey number's in a few rafters this season.

I've been sideswiped while on a bike but walked away with a few scratches. This spring though, I almost got completely nailed head-on at an intersection in Jersey City when a van ran a red light.
September 7 will be three years since I got sideswiped on the road by a driver who didn’t stop, less than a mile from my house. I walked away from it with a badly sprained shoulder, bruises, and a scar of twelve links of chain on the back of my right leg (I still have it) where the bike landed on top of me. But I was lucky. I walked away.

It's easy to destroy the man since there is alcohol involved, would people feel the same if he was using his phone instead of having a drink?

ABSOLUTELY.

People don't treat hurling two tons of steel in each other's general direction with the respect it deserves. I used to bike commute to work every day for 6 years, and the amount of dumb shit I've seen from drivers is absolutely shocking.

We need to be way harsher on drivers. Get caught distracted driving? Automatic 30 day suspension. Even if you don't cause an accident.

Unspeakable tragedy, I’m heartbroken for his friends, family, and the broader hockey community.

But maybe cool it with some of these lynch mob hot takes calling for the death penalty, life in solitary, etc… It’s really not a good look.

And for the record, I’m speaking as someone whose youngest brother was killed at 21 by a drunk hit-and-run driver while out walking with friends.
I'm sorry that you had to go through that. I think the people who go off the deep end with the harshest punishment possible rhetoric are processing things in their own way, but that's why the criminal punishment system shouldn't be dictated by emotion.

Horrible. Let's remember this tragedy the next time a hockey player is caught driving drunk but doesn't hit anyone so some of us feel like typing how it really isn't that big of a deal because who here hasn't. That's the kind of attitude that gets people injured and killed.

WTF?
Yo.
I wish this was a dream and this wasn't real. That's messed up.

Best wishes to all who are close to the Gaudreau's. That's devastating.

I ride over 1k every year on my bike, my favorite hobby. But unlike most byclist, 95% of those miles are on designated bike paths. Whenever I do travel on the road, I say a prayer. And the number one thing I fear is being hit by a cell phone using distracted driver. My path crosses a main road and I sit at the light waiting to cross, I would say nearly half the cars that go pass, the driver is using their phone. I have the right to ride my bike on any road I choose. My abundance of common sense usually prevents me from doing so.

I'm just saying Alcohol is an easy scapegoat to demonize. A bad driver will kill you whether they had beers, using a phone or from any other distraction.

might be one of the dumbest post in hfboards history. congrats!

I don't suppose there's a way to say this that doesn't make it seem like I'm minimizing the intoxicated aspect on the driver, but the impatience and poor judgement is almost the "worse" part of the crime. Being impaired would have slowed his potential reaction time but it's the aggressive driving that caused the sitution.

100%.

I could totally see an agressive impatient sober driver try to pull that move. It's sickening to think that if he was sober, he'd basically get a slap on the wrist. Probably some community service and lose his license for 3 months.

If you do things like this on the road, you're an absolute simpleton piece of shit.
In my experience, it's people in the largest vehicles* who do the dumbest things out of impatience. I guess maybe they feel more protected, but they don't give consideration to what happens to the other people on the road when their impatience leads to a misjudgment or mistake.

* I'm talking about the largest passenger vehicles. Typically, commercial drivers are more careful than average commuters.

Was following it all night hoping it wasn't true.

Just devestating news to wake up to.

RIP to him and his brother. I can only imagine what his family is going through right now on what should have been one of the best occasions of their young lives.

The world is just not fair sometimes.

So you're saying the Gaudreau brothers should have known the stats, that the US has absolute shit drivers and is generally an unsafe environment to bike at night in (unless you're on protected, designated bike paths)...?
