According to the police statement, when this guy was unable to pass on the left because the driver in front of him moved over to make room for the Gaudreaus, he got angry, slammed on the accelerator and tried to pass on the right, where the Gaudreaus were.Happens very frequently in NY and NJ, I don't know if we can just blame this on the guy maybe being drunk because I've seen it happen over and over again, there's just a lot of reckless behavior out there. And since SUVs were involved this guy was probably unable to see the Gaudreaus riding due to blind spots.
The driver has been charged with impaired drivingdo we know it was definitely alcohol related? seems more like a miscommunication between aggressive NJ drivers. their bad reputation continues

What makes it more ironic and stupid is the guy was by some accounts a bike rider himself. You’d think he would be aware of such things. My father in law is bike rider and in their community they’re extremely diligent in making sure the public understands the dangers bikers face when riding. Just tragicobviously we dont know yet but if you go to google maps in the area listed in the article it is a one lane road in each direction without a shoulder. Dont know how this guy tried to pass on the right. Was thinking because of Marylands extremely stupid pass on the shoulder law that this would be the situation that happened in this tragedy.
edit: just saw the above which makes it even worse. The SUV was safely passing the brothers and the ahole tried to pass the SUV (now in the middle of the road) on the right. insanely stupid
And the driver in front was driving cautiously and responsibly and moved over to give the cyclists lots of room, as legally required.People drive like absolute morons all over this country, f*** outta here with this nonsense.
Could be a mix of both? I'm sure the alcohol didn't help his rage decision to not want to wait. Telling the cops he had 5 or 6 beers isn't just coming back from the bar after having 2-3 beers. I'm sure he didn't see them, but that's completely irrelevant to the shitty decisions he made.do we know it was definitely alcohol related? seems more like a miscommunication between aggressive NJ drivers. their bad reputation continues

It's not just a lesson here about drunk driving, there's a lesson about aggressive asshole driving as well. Just wait one goddamn minute. If you can't pass and you want to, it's frustrating, I get it, but just ease off the gas. Put on some chill music and get home two minutes later. It's not a race. The goal is for everyone on the road to make it home to their families.
He was almost certainly tailgating the f*** out of the vehicle in front of him, too, which would likely have blocked his field of vision and made it impossible to see the bikes. A lot of people get behind the wheel and become absolutely dangerous idiots.According to the police statement, when this guy was unable to pass on the left because the driver in front of him moved over to make room for the Gaudreaus, he got angry, slammed on the accelerator and tried to pass on the right, where the Gaudreaus were.

I generally loathe this phrase but in this case I shall make a well deserved exception:Maybe the take away is that deterrence is an overstated reason for making penalties as harsh as possible instead of "oh there aren't any deterrents because this happens."
