Holy f**king shit, I can't believe. I just can't. Feel so sick right now.

RIP Johnny and Matthew. Life is truly unfair.

This just pisses me off. Anyone who thinks I've just had a few drinks so I can drive is really rolling the dice with the lives of others and if you need a reminder of what damage can be caused take a look at these pics, remember them and call a cab/Uber....

So as I understand it, a car was passing the Gaudreau brothers while this Higgins guy was trying to pass it from the left, and then he had the genius idea to pass it from the right and thus hit the bikers?

That's such dumbassery it's hard to even begin to imagine.
Happens very frequently in NY and NJ, I don't know if we can just blame this on the guy maybe being drunk because I've seen it happen over and over again, there's just a lot of reckless behavior out there. And since SUVs were involved this guy was probably unable to see the Gaudreaus riding due to blind spots.

Absolutely awful, fantastically fun player to watch and be a fan of, I was really hoping he was going to sign with us and would have been a huge fan as a short player myself. One of my favorites and I'll miss watching him. Matthew played for our affiliate orgs as well and I was hoping he would have carved out a role.

f*** cars

Not to get off topic, but I would appreciate the NHL leading a campaign against drunk and dangerous driving. Sadly Johnny Hockey isn't the only NHL star killed by the actions of a drunk or reckless driver, not even in recent memory. I'd imagine there is significant overlap between the population who is most likely to drive drunk or dangerously and those who watch NHL hockey (specifically, young men).

All that said though my absolute deepest condolences to the Gaudreau family. What a completely awful and avoidable tragedy

I think they should seriously consider retiring his number from hockey in honor of it and in awareness of it.

Looked him up on FB. Former soldier with 2 young girls. Now those young girls will also grow up without a father in their lives. Don’t drink and drive.

There is no proof that is the guy. Please do not dox people...There is more than one individual with the name from this area.

Here’s his mugshot and linked news article

obviously we dont know yet but if you go to google maps in the area listed in the article it is a one lane road in each direction without a shoulder. Dont know how this guy tried to pass on the right. Was thinking because of Marylands extremely stupid pass on the shoulder law that this would be the situation that happened in this tragedy.

It’s likely he didn’t know about the cyclists and had a moment of road rage when the SUV moved into the centre to make room for the Gaudreau brothers, blocking his pass.

In those moments, people do all kinds of crazy things, legal or not.

The headline needs to change. He didn't "pass away".

The Gaudreau brothers were as good as murdered by a savage who should never walk free for the rest of his life.

Not enough, too many assholes and drunk drivers on the road still
There's a wide gulf between more deterrents and "this suspected drunk driver should be put to death." Even Texas is giving the latter the wtf side-eye

Heart wrenching. Feels surreal.
Rest in peace Johnny.

My condolences to his fans and his family. I can’t even imagine how they must feel.

They probably will, but how long will it last?

Just like how there was two inclusion groups made up and all I've ever heard is them arguing.

It definitely didn't look good last night, especially with going that long without confirmation it wasn't him, but I kept hoping and hoping. Such horrible news. No amount of counts against and years locked up makes this ever feel right. If you're under the influence, just don't drive... Looking at the mugshot I can't even tell if the guy acknowledges what happened...
