According to the police statement, when this guy was unable to pass on the left because the driver in front of him moved over to make room for the Gaudreaus, he got angry, slammed on the accelerator and tried to pass on the right, where the Gaudreaus were.

It's not just a lesson here about drunk driving, there's a lesson about aggressive asshole driving as well. Just wait one goddamn minute. If you can't pass and you want to, it's frustrating, I get it, but just ease off the gas. Put on some chill music and get home two minutes later. It's not a race. The goal is for everyone on the road to make it home to their families.
I don't know how bicyclists feel safe on the road. When I was growing up you pretty much stayed on the sidewalk as much as possible, the bikers get a tiny little lane in some places it's such a small margin for error

Could be a mix of both? I'm sure the alcohol didn't help his rage decision to not want to wait. Telling the cops he had 5 or 6 beers isn't just coming back from the bar after having 2-3 beers. I'm sure he didn't see them, but that's completely irrelevant to the shitty decisions he made.
5-6 beers almost certainly means he probably had closer to 10, too. The guy should simply be locked away in a prison cell and the key thrown away. Let him rot with no chance at ever coming back.

Condolences to the Gaudreau families, what an absolutely senseless tragedy. RIP Matt and Johnny, you're both much to young to have anything like this happen.

As a parent, I don't know how to process losing two children. You wake up... suddenly your foundation is gone. Unimaginable. I hope the Gaudreaus have loving support to help carry some of the load.

Not sure if Johnny's brother had his own family, but Johnny's young wife and kids are going through a tragedy that'll change the course of their lives.

I can’t believe this. RIP Gaudreau.

He was such an amazing talent. As a Canucks fan, this guy lit us up ever since he quite literally stepped into the league and was just such a treat to watch. He will be dearly missed. I can’t even process this.

Not enough, too many assholes and drunk drivers on the road still
Yes. My son's girlfriend was hit by a drunk driver at the end of June. She is OK but this is shockingly more common, despite public warnings and awareness for decades.

Even if there were fewer drunk drivers, there are still way too many aggressive and impatient drivers. I head to church every Sunday using a 15 minute stretch of country road with one lane on each side. The amount of times people try to aggressively pass people near a hill, despite double lines, etc and the amount times I saw a car barrelling towards me as it was trying to pass a car on the other side - a lot of unsafe drivers out there.

Just absolutely devastating for the entire Gaudreau family, on a day they should all be celebrating. Just so sad.

and players are starting to report for camps. Hell of a way to start the season
Hockey community is small and close. Every team is going to be affected by this. Just thinking of Matthew Tkachuk who was so close to him. Sean Monahan who signed with Columbus and was excited to pant with him again. Kevin Hayes who lost his brother Jimmy and now Jonny and Matthew who he was close to. Just horrible.

Personally, I just flat out don't feel safe. I'm fortunate that DC has a wonderful network of dedicated bike trails, and I only ride on roads when I absolutely have to in order to connect from one trail to another. Most drivers are indeed very responsible and pass safely when I do that, but I am very mindful that it only takes one bad one to kill me.

Generally, riding on rural lower traffic roads like the one the Gaudreaus were on is pretty safe. But it only takes one drunk, aggressive driver.

Share the road, people.

Awful, just awful. I feel so sad for his family and his wife and children in particular. RIP in Johnny Hockey. You were a treat to watch play. The league is a lesser today than it was yesterday

Does seeing he "passed away" piss anyone else off? He was f***ing murdered.

I hope this guy gets jail for life, what is the sentencing in cases like this normally?

I'm devastated, this one hit home so hard... I'm just in shock, sad as f***

Rip Johnny Hockey this is so brutal I'm sick.

I’m not sure about the States, but if this happened in Canada and the guy pleaded guilty, he’d honestly probably be sentenced to 3-5 years, which is an absolute joke.

Yeah was just thinking about Hayes, this has to really hit him hard given what he already went through.
