John Tortorella Named (Part Time) Head Coach Discussion

It usually takes a real prick to get any hockey player to publicly bad-mouth a coach. I'm sure there are plenty like Torts, but the stories of him just benching guys for no reason or explanation are a consistent story.

Hockey players aren't known for publicly calling out coaches, etc. The positive stories and recollections don't overpower the real reputation of him around the league.
The only player who slammed him was Dubinsky b/c he was demoted to 3C when his skills declined.
One other guy was a scrub who had no career after he left CBJ.

There isn't this long list of players with knives out for Torts, a lot of the stories stem more from his antics than his actual actions.
There is a sizeable list of former players who have praised him to high heaven.

I do think Torts tends to come down harder on young 1st rd picks (many of whom developed a sense of entitlement from being the stars of their CHL and college teams) than later round picks, b/c the later round picks tend to self-select for IQ, motor and work ethic (since they weren't talented enough to get drafted higher).

Like most HCs, the players who don't work out tend to have grudges, the one that blossom under a coach tend to praise him.

I'm sure Hayes has a more favorable opinion of AV than Ghost or Voracek!

If you want to see some guys who are upset with their coach, check out the Flames Lindholm and Backund and Sutter. There’s some real unhappiness going on inside of that franchise.

It's not against Couts, but it sure as f*** is alienating. Wonder if this is considered a knock on Torts by those that favour him.
Charlie said on the podcast that he wonders if Torts felt he went too far, because later in the week was that 7-0 game in New Jersey - one of the more pathetic efforts of the season - and instead of burying them, Torts fell on the sword.

Jones has has one Norris finish at 9 and one at 4.

That's "perennial?"

The problem, as ever, is that defense/pumping of Tortorella requires just making stuff up.

He also makes it sound like Jones fell off without Tortorella — that’s how awe-inspiring of a coach he is — when really his nadir was with him in Columbus those final years. Besides the fact he was always a #3/4 defenseman masquerading as an elite #1, even in his better years. What a feather in Tortorella’s cap also believing he was an elite #1.

I recall hearing much about how Tortorella would extract the secret upside from TDA.

The funny thing is Jones has actually been better so far in Chicago compared to the end of his time in Columbus.

Tortorella shouldn't be getting credit for a single thing in terms of how players individually play.
YOU actually posted the above ? ..... utter nonsense

Torts pushed Frost, and Frost owes him a lot of money when he gets his new contract in a year or two. B/c Frost had a tendency of going MIA, losing focus and Torts by riding him made him aware that he's got to bring it every shift and has made him a better player.

Torts pushed Tippett, and demanded more and more, and Tippett stepped up.

Torts pushed TK, gave him more responsibility, and he took his game up another level.

Torts pushed York, and got him to play more aggressively instead of just passively doing his job, demanding that he push play and become the "man."

Torts pushed Risto, and Shaw actually instilled fundamentals in him.

Torts certainly f***ed around with Frost and the result is...he's the same guy he's been, the only difference started when he was given good linemates. It's not rocket surgery, a playmaker needs someone to make plays with. The only reason Frost took off was because Tortorella's bosses told him to use him better. He can't even get credit for giving him better usage, and on this front he was being even dumber than Flyers management.

TK has had this in him for a while. Pretty normal development curve.

York is the same. He's just allowed to play.

I'd like to give him credit for Tippett, but he started the season off like that so he must have sorted it himself in the summer.

Torts pushed Risto? How? Oh ok, apparently Shaw did that.

Here's the thing: Tortorella came in here proudly boasting about how he doesn't like young players, doesn't understand them, and has no idea how to reach them, so he wasn't going to even bother trying. We have multiple players confirming that's how he worked. So explain to me why a coach who doesn't coach deserves credit for players figuring themselves out? I'm happy to credit Shaw for Risto and Seeler improvements, but otherwise it sure seems like the players deserve credit themselves.

All he does is set ice time, usage, and systems. The high level stuff. He doesn't dive any deeper than that. He's not working on anyone's development. According to both him, and his players.

“It’s a young, dumb league.”
That sure as hell sounds like prejudice. It’s also a good attitude to have if you want apathetic, disengaged players. So who’s dumb here?

Torts is lazy AF. We all know that for sure now because he doesn’t even bother coaching all the games.
"No you see it's good he doesn't coach he's a trend setter soon other coaches will do it too. Also I love the fact he alienates BUMS like Sanheim and Frost, just as long as Coots and Cates don't have their feelings hurt. f*** those loser players"

Neither AV or Yeo could get Frost to play well.
He's coming off his first good season of his career at 23.
Guess some players need to be pushed.

Pushed or marinated? I'm confused. Have you not even defended Frost in the past citing missed years of development due to injury and/or COVID? Just want to know which narrative we're on now, because this is some "choose your own adventure" posting

Torts had the Flyers playing most games this year, even opposing teams said they were hard to play against .
He wanted a different view of the players during the last games, maybe discussing matters with Briere, who knows .....
Keep moaning .....kennies are gonna kenny
