John Tortorella Named (Part Time) Head Coach Discussion

What do you think Gauthier is? Speed skill, just happens to be big as well.
York, Andrae, Toumaala, Brink.
Attard is big but is an offensive first D-man.

Problem is top skill guys are hard to obtain, outside the first round, you have to luck into one.
Fast forecheckers are easier to find in the later rounds, because if they had skill as well as speed, they'd be top draft picks.
Or slow guys with skill (Strome).
York is getting the Laperriere treatment in Lehigh Valley, so we know all the skill is being actively coached out of his game. If Andrae comes over next year, he gets the York treatment (see above). They've already ruined Tuomaala with their 'awesome' development path last year. Instead of doing the right thing and sending him to Sudbury in the OHL, they kept him around the AHL where Laperriere got his claws into him (once again, a common theme with Flyers prospect development) and now Tuomaala can't even get time in lesser leagues in Finland. Brink might get lucky, but he's going to play for Tortorella, so once again, the skill will be coached out of his game and it will be all about checking.

As for Gauthier, you can bet his advisors are watching what's going on in Philadelphia and who's to say that they don't advise him to stay in school and avoid this mess. It's possible he walks in for years as a free agent because of this mess.

And let's not pretend this is all Hextall's mess either. Schmuck and Nature Boy have had four years and the team has gotten progressively worse under their watch. And before you quote a bunch of useless advanced stats and go on about how visually things look better, Hextall also said the same thing about when Laperriere was running the PK under Haktard and we all know how that turned out.

So you can continue defending the bullshit that goes on here and pretending it's better because you can quote a bunch of useless stats, but he reality is that the eye test shows this is a failure. Christ, when Columbus and Seattle look miles better with a lesser roster, then you know something's wrong. A top 10 salaried roster and bottom five results. That's beyond awful and that's 100% Felcher and the senior advisors and their definition of what good hockey is.

He rubs me the wrong way because he’s a man child. I expect the “face” of my franchise to act like the adult in the room but who am I?
I'm sure you'd be calm and collected coaching this team. :D

Actually, Torts has been pretty patient given all the ways this team has found to lose recently.
But he's been here and done that, you don't take on a rebuild if you're not prepared to lose on a regular basis.

But tolerance for media stupidity, well, that requires a saint. That he ain't.

I couldn't see the tweets so I thought this was about Hayes for a second.

I think we can say for certain now that Hayes will never be Flyers captain under Torts, and it's very likely Torts will last longer in Philly than KH.

I think Hayes is destined for the JVR role next year, offensively talented veteran forward who is sheltered to some extent to hide his defensive deficiencies. One problem for Hayes is Torts pushes a faster pace than he can handle, he's more of a plodder who is good at puck control but isn't going to give you much on the forecheck or get back quickly on the back check.

If he puts up a couple good scoring seasons back to back, think he won't be hard to deal with 2 years left on his contract and a cap that increases by 5-10%. By 2024-25, Gauthier, Foerster and Brink should be pushing for top 6 roles.

As far as that "Sauce" guy, they haven't looked "horrible," they look outmatched because at this point they are outmatched.
Take 5 of the top 6 scoring forwards off any team and they're not going to look good.

Trying hard does matter, because if you're developing and evaluating players, you want the team to work hard, try and make things happen even if some players aren't good at finishing. If you can consistently control play, over time as you upgrade the talent, good metrics will turn into production.

Make more excuses, you can't.

They have looked horrible and they are horrible. It's fact both based in the eye test and in the metrics. It cannot be denied by anyone outside of fantasy writers that rival Tolkien.

I don't think the Flyers have looked horrible. I've actually enjoyed watching them despite their being an injury-destroyed, low-talent team.

Yes, they make turnovers and mistakes that drive me (and surely the coaching staff) crazy.

But they did that last season while looking disjointed and uninterested. This season at least I see a "team." They are trying. They are moving in the right direction. I can feel it.

Their best players are playing better than they have in two years. They've got young players like Tippett looking like legit 20+ goal scorers. They are playing hard instead of going through the motions. They're in basically every game. I've got no problem watching this.

They had a rough start, but they've been competitive the last 8 games while Hart cooled off.
They're playing even or better 5x5, they struggle on STs b/c well, lack of talent and experience.

That to me isn't "horrible," horrible is last season when they'd fall behind and then play dead.

You can't do anything about the lack of talent at this point of the season, given how well Seeler - Risto are playing right now, replacing them with say York - Attard would make the team worse in the short run, and there are no forwards left to promote.

So all you can ask is they play hard and some kids get a chance to improve their game.

Douche vs turd sandwich. Both suck and even if they have different makes and methods, if they still suck, they still suck.

2nd to last in GF per game.
5th worst PP in the NHL.
6th worst PK in the NHL.
4th fewest shots per game in the NHL.
8th most shots allowed in the NHL.
3rd worst face off percentage.
5th fewest goals scored at 5v5.
3rd to last in takeaways.
10th least in Expected Goals For.
3rd most in expected goals against.
Allowed the 3rd most high danger chances.
Allowed the 5th most medium danger chances.
6th most allowed low danger chances.

As with everything, while there are glaring issues at the forefront, if there are a ton of little things that are bad, whatever good may be happening for the team will surely snatched away when the actual results come home to roost. This team is terrible.

By the way, love Hart and I know he's played out of his mind, but there's gonna be a point where that will come down and the team will pay for it. If anything, it's already starting.

Adding a bit more, the Phantoms somehow have a winning record (barely), and have a bit better goals per game and a bit better goals against per game than the Flyers.
