Q: How hard was it to fire Tortorella?

A: I am very appreciate of what Torts did here. We had an evaluation at the end of the year like we always do. We talk about the future and our goal is to win the Stanley Cup and I felt that this was a decision that had to be made to go forward. I think he was a little bit shocked but he is a gentlemen and took it very well.

Q: Target date for a new coach?

A: We have our organizational meetings in June and we will spend that time going over people and doing interviews. That process will start soon and I hope to have it over by the Draft. June 30.

Q:What made him fire Torts?

A: It wasn’t one thing. I won’t speculate or criticize what happened with Torts or give reasons on why. After the work we did after the year trying to improve the team, it’s a decision that I made, it was consulted with a few people, but removing anyone from the coaching role is a difficult decision. It was a tough decision but I feel like I made the right decision for us to move forward. After doing the analytical work we do after every seaosn, I thought I needed to do something to move our team forward. Every coach has a shelf life and I have told every coach I have hired that this will happen. I had to make a decision and I did.

Eakins is close with Gernander. Both were substitute scrubs in that 1997 run and coached in the AHL.

Eakins is a defensive guy. Desjardins is a three-zone guy but Dallas is nuts to let him leave.

I want Desjardins.

Sather on Lundqvist comments: "It didn't have anything to do with it. We plan on signing Henrik to a long-term contract."

Well, now we see. Hope for no dumb moves but someone in here said Gorton was doing work too then I'm fine with that because it puts another head at least in some sort of place, and then see where it goes. Right now we've taken a step backwards. But if we hire a coach that isn't a retread and that can get the guys going, I think we're back in business.

Assistant Mike Sullivan remains at this point...

Until the new coach comes in.

This is all posturing until the new boss is picked, then the rest can go on interviews for other vacancies and say they were 'in on the Ranger's coaching job'.

Sather: "We'll find the right guy." Won't discuss specifics of what he's looking for in new coach.

I read last year via a secondary source that Pierre McGuire was happy in broadcast and would only consider leaving it for a front office position.

I'd be very interested in Dallas Eakins. We have a young team here and the development of three of those guys in particular (Stepan, Kreider, McDonagh) is essential; Eakins has demonstrated with the Marlies that he can nurture younger players. His team's success in the Calder Cup playoffs warrants appreciation too.
i've heard this as well, but it's the ****ing new york rangers. i think he'd have no problem leaving broadcasting for an original 6 team-- especially the rangers. he's got the brain to win a cup and adjust. it's a pipe-dream, but i think he's the best potential option available right now

Not sure why everyone is bashing Sullivan so much. Yes he ran a brutal power-play, but the guy is a defensive coach if im not mistaken. He turned our D core into about as solid as any in the league.

Eakins would be an interesting choice, but always have to be wary regarding the "hot coach" - Boucher would have been an extremely welcome choice last year, and most posters are hesitant to bring him in now.

Not advocating for Ruff/AV/etc, but in a way this is sort of a win now team - can't afford to question this decision for the next 2-3 years.

Not a lot of specifics from Sather...but says "if you're not in the Stanley Cup, season isn't a success."

"I think if you are not in the Stanley Cup and not winning it your season hasn't been a success." - Glen Sather #NYR
