I do like Eakins. I think he has something to prove after being passed over in Toronto and he's a good candidate. We need to hire a PP coach as well though. I'm not sure if I'd let him bring his crew from the Marlies. Their PP has been lousy the last few years.

I'd absolutely love for this to be the first step away from the high profile, make headlines era of Glen Sather and into the "let the record speak for itself" era under Gorton. Wishful thinking I'm sure.

I agree 100%

I think this has to do with breaking a lot of his players confidence rather than how the team performed this year.

Destroyed Richards in 2 years.
Completely broke Kreider's confidence
Calling out Hags.
Im sure there is many more.

The guy is just someone who wears out his welcome after a few years. He's a dick. Plain and simple. Fresh start will be good for this team.

This seems to be what I'm thinking as well. Eventually you can wear out your welcome if you don't win and win it all. His act with the players could have got to the point where they started regressing instead of moving forward.

That has been my thinking all along. He wants full control over hand picking talent and developing a franchise.

Gorton/Messier would be a good combination, IMO. Make Messier VP of Hockey Operations and let Gorton handle the heavy stuff.

If the new coach wants Sullivan he might be back. But a coach needs to be able to pick his staff.

Yeah, I agree. I just think it's unfortunate for Sully, I really don't have any complaints about him. I thought he did a good job.

Hopefully someone will give him a chance somewhere else, he deserves it. So does Torts.

Gorton would and should get the GM job before Messier did.

I would like Sully back for the defense.

This will be a nice change from the media treatment Torts handed out. I have said it before, I don't care about the media at all, but it will be nice to have a coach who answers questions when the team is not performing and when there are injuries the fans want to know about. This is hockey, not the central intelligence agency.

I feel like AV is a great fit; I watch a lot of west coast hockey and VAN in particular for the late night timeslot. Great PP and ES offensive coordination and I don't see how he is going to mess up your backend. If anyone is going to salvage Richards as well, AV is one of the best options.

Tippett is great, but I think he stays in PHX for another season. Ruff makes no sense to me; way too similar to Tortorella.

I see Gorton's hands on every recent move. I'm sure Sather has ultimate say but feels like he's actually taking some of that advice.

:shakehead

I was listening, he got one good call out of 10, that is why I don't listen to sports radio, today is an exception.

I hope you're right! I can see it but feel this coaching hire will be HUGE test.

Calling for Messier is just laughable. "This team can take the next step with a guy who has zero coaching pedigree!!"

Torts calling out hags on TV probably had to do with the firing.

What if hags came back with "well, I think the way sullivan coaches the power play stinks. I don't think why, but he just stinks!"

That's no way to run a team.

If it's anyone from '94 make it Nemchinov, at least he's coached, I bet iron Mike is mad he left.

All joking aside if it's Messier or anyone like that I'll be furious.

Generally speaking, a coach's job is to get the most out of his players. Torts was no longer doing that. It was time to go. Simple.

I never liked how he disrespected certain players publicly, poisoning the situation with those players and the results being that the players were ineffective. There are certain players who will respond positively to such tactics but a coach needs to have a pulse for what works with his players. Everyone needs to be accountable but you don't get accountability from every player with the same tactics.

The following are a couple of examples that come to mind:

Gaborik's an easy one. Gaborik scores 41 goals in 2011-12 but now that Torts has Nash on his roster, he decides Gaborik's going to take the back seat to Nash and play LW for the first time in his pro career. Of course, the fact that Nash had played a substantial amount of time on the LW in Columbus (I didn't say the majority of the time, but a substantial amount of time) would have led a lot of coaches to put Nash on the LW and not screw around with his best goal-scorer, but not Torts, he's too smart for that.

I never liked the Drury acquisition but the year after Drury led the team in powerplay goal scoring, Torts opens the next season with the announcement that Drury is no longer a powerplay player and he won't be a part of the powerplay. Instead, he trots out Chris Higgins and others, until he has to go back to Drury. Now I'm not saying that caused Drury to suck but I do think it helped create a bad situation or make a bad one worse and, in the end, not one that was going to get the most out of Drury.

This playoffs, we had the "Hagelin stinks on the powerplay" comments, which were totally unecessary. I'm not saying those comments scarred Hagelin for life but I don't see them as having served any positive purpose either.

I don't think this team had a chance for success moving forward with Torts and I'm glad he's gone.

Remember what happened last time our star player helped pushed the coach out over philisophical differences?
