Strongly doubt this is about Lundqvist or anything, but more about Tortorella being unable to adapt and get the most out of his star players when it matters, and that the power play has been god awful for years now and probably cost the Rangers a chance at the cup last year.

The problems are the same despite the change in personnel, so I would think that is the biggest issue in terms of firing him, and Sather knowing that this team doesn't have forever to figure out how to be a contender.

I liked a lot of what Torts did, but he really struggled to adapt in ways that he needed to. The defensive system and breakouts just were not working at all anymore, teams had figured it out and he was doing nothing to address that.

Still thought he'd get another season to work it out though

One of the more sensible things I've read in this thread so far, Lev. ( But I expect that from you.). Honestly, if Francesca is right, then, it comes down to what a few of us said at season's end - Tortorella needed to realize that he no longer had the 2011-2 Rangers. Myself, I'm in the bobbop camp that this was a disagreement between Gorton/Clark and Tortorella, and Sather simply stepped in and put an end to it, and sided with his front office. Also, silly Ranger fans...Sathef will be a part of this organization until his funeral.

Look Torts had his flaws so I get wanting to go in a new direction.

But any players who spoke out really need to put up or shut up now. Torts still got the Rangers to their best finish in 15 years.

I like Eakins who I think, Trxjw, brought up. Time for some new blood and someone who gets this new NHL.

Boucher wouldn't be a bad choice either. He had NO defense or a goalie in TB.

I do like Eakins. I think he has something to prove after being passed over in Toronto and he's a good candidate. We need to hire a PP coach as well though. I'm not sure if I'd let him bring his crew from the Marlies. Their PP has been lousy the last few years.

I'd absolutely love for this to be the first step away from the high profile, make headlines era of Glen Sather and into the "let the record speak for itself" era under Gorton. Wishful thinking I'm sure.

I just can't imagine Messier is ready to coach. I think he would offer a lot if the values needed to be instilled in a team from the coach but I don't know if he would have the methods to coach in the NHL. The game is different than when he played.

Can we also move away from the past?

I think this has to do with breaking a lot of his players confidence rather than how the team performed this year.

Destroyed Richards in 2 years.
Completely broke Kreider's confidence
Calling out Hags.
Im sure there is many more.

The guy is just someone who wears out his welcome after a few years. He's a dick. Plain and simple. Fresh start will be good for this team.

No word yet but can't see #NYR bringing back Mike Sullivan if John Tortorella is not the head coach.

Shame, I love how he handled the D.

I'm hoping Gorton is the one doing the heavy lifting during the press conference.

I seems like the job Mark Messier wants is GM, anyways.

I swear, if Messier gets that job over Gorton, that may be the last straw for me...

I am hoping the next coach brings in a PP coach specifically. I don't care if they are the 3rd coach or the 15th who only practices with the team.

Usually **** like this is handled by the new head coach. Sometimes they are allowed to hire their own staff and other times the team brings the staff. Usually it's the former, though. I'd definitely expect Sullivan to get fired once a new head coach is announced.

Messier is the kind of guy who would thrive as a coach as long as he had two great assistants. Guy brings tons of intangible and would get the most out of his team night in and night out, but would need solid assistants to handle the X's and O's.

As others have written, Alain Vigneault and Lindy Ruff certainly now candidates. Both solid coaches. I'd be really excited by Dave Tippett.

Well said, Lev. Definitely agree with your take on things.
