I dunno how excited Id be to sign long term if it means there's a good chance the fan base turns on me. rather sign for a US team where I can play hockey and live a peaceful life.
maybe but that has nothing to do with my reply to your previous post

I hope Matthews doesn't resign.

That would suck.

I was hoping he'd re-sign for 8 years.

:petpeeve:
lol yeah forgot the good ol - big difference in resign and re-sign haha

Well yeah it kinda does, I can imagine alot of players would feel the same. Tavares is a tier above the players you mentioned. you just cant go around consistently running players out of the franchise like that. it's unprofessional. why would any oher star players want to ever sign long term if there's a chance in a couple years the fan base turns on you because new players are in need of contracts. makes our franchise look like a joke

it doesn't at all since it isn't the fans that control what mgmt does with a player and Tavares is grossly overrated and always has been that's why we didn't improve

Players know this is a business and if their play drops off they'll be criticized and every other team with cup aspiration would be looking at ways of dumping a grossly overpaid Tavares . The world doesn't revolve around Johnny mumbles regardless if some of fans believe it does .

The NHL is a business and if feelings get hurt it’s part of the business. Good lord you put the best team you can on the ice and if that means moving 91 because he’s not helping you do it. You can swap Horvat for Tavares and save 6 million.

That would be the absolute last reason why anyone would consider the Leafs a joke. It doesn't even register.

We haven't consistently run anyone out of the organization. In fact it's been the opposite. Every time someone is sad we go ahead and lose a trade just so that they can find happiness elsewhere.

f*** feelings. There's no feelings in professional sports at the highest level. Everyone knows this. Feelings make you stay Ina hospital room for a few nights only for the guy you're staying with to ask for a trade, then leave as a UFA the first chance they get.

It's about time management worry about what's happening on the ice and stop caring about where the player, his wife and his kids went on vacation during the summer.

Yeah whatever man thats not really what Im talking about. us as fans consistently turning on the players that sign here is not a great sign.
If we run Tavares out of town we may never get a very big signing like him as a FA for a very very very long time.
sometimes you have to honor the contract and not run them out like McCabe and Tucker
along the lines of why you dont sign players as FAs just to trade them that year. some players are mad at Vegas for it.
hockey is a business and player moves should be about business and not about fans taking players to their breaking points
be nice if our major fan base wasn't a negative majority of the time

I agree and not one of those guys took a discount out of warm and fuzzy feelings toward the Leafs or even with the thought of freeing up money to help fill out the rest of the team.
It was all about “show me the money”. If trading anyone makes the team better……..do it

Tavares is still a good to very good player. The problem is that he is supposed to be a difference maker which he is not. And his stats are somewhat inflated because the other teams' best defensive players always focus on Matthews. His signing will prove to be Dubas's big blunder.
This caused a Ripple Effect...

We know that six teams made presentations. I doubt any of them offered below $10M. Islanders reportedly offered 8 @ $11.25M, and "reportedly" is all we can go by. Teams, agents and players generally don't 100% confirm those numbers.
I don't know how they made these offers when JT specifically said he did not want to pick the team based on salary but its future. I read an article that the leafs didn't even talk money until AFTER he told them he was coming here. So where exactly did these other teams have a chance to make those offers? I think it's just PR from someone at MLSE trying to make $11M seem like a bargain.

I think everyone thought that because he played with the likes of Matt Moulson and the like and made them better that he would be almost Elite playing with better players. JT is still averaging the same amount of points he did before he got here...so that is the big problem for us. We never got more than a PPG player for 11M.

You would have thought that Dubas would at least align the AM contract to end with JT's so we could just move some of the money to him...but nope...he gives him 1 less year than JT and now if AM wants to break the bank we are going to be in trouble for 1yr until JT's expires. That part killed me....why not think ahead a little bit?

It's been 4 years with JT...are we that much better than we were in the 2017 playoffs?

I just think about how the Rangers bought out Brad Richards when he was starting to slip (not that Tavares' contract can be bought out with cap savings though), or how Tampa Bay bought out Vincent Lecavalier when it looked like his contract would be a hindrance to their build. No matter if you're a long time captain or a flashy UFA signing, if you don't live up to your contract you should be fair game.

Kyle Dubas may not be the hockey version of Theo Epstein as one would have hoped.

Matthews team probably wanted as short as possible, so my guess is Dubas wanted 8 years but Matthews had to agree and wouldn't.

I believe there was an 8 year version of that contract on the table but the AAV would have been astronomical.

Matthews and Nylander both UFA.
You think Nylander is going to be content to remain 4 mil behind everyone? I’d move him now, find another piece to sign for 6 years now.

Our ability to re-up Matthews and Nylander will also be tied to Jake Muzzin and TJ Brodie exiting that same summer, so it's still doable. Then the next year Tavares comes off the books and if there's any appetite to keep him I'd imagine he's coming back at only a steep discount. Crisis averted.

Nylander isn't as good as Matthews and Marner.

Trading Nylander now is equivalent to trading Kadri a few years ago.
So what’s the value of not as good?
If Matthews makes 13/14 million next time, I’d Nylander demanding 9.5 equivalent enough as not as good. Nylander is now putting up Tavares points.

Trading Nylander is nothing equivalent to trading Kadri. Even Kadri trade doesn’t matter if we got a solid long term piece back. Which we didn’t.

People freak about trading x and losing. It depends what key piece you are smart enough to trade for. We aren’t winning now with it.
The only thing I worried about Kadri winning the Cup is how much more paranoid it would make an already paranoid fanbase.
