Even though Tavares is really strong in the face off circle, I think he needs to move to the wing.

whats the rational for moving him to the wing? He’s strong on the dot and he’s still responsible defensively. Two of the most important things to be a Center.

His play is a bit of a concern but further down the list than the other apparent issues.
he’s still a PPG. I just think Leafs fans get wrapped up in goal scoring. He isn’t scoring, but he’s doing other things well. I’m pretty sure he had two primary assists on Nylanders goals against STL. I just can’t wait for the cap to go up because the constant nitpicking because of salary is soo so tiring. There are worse contracts out there.
additionally it’s pretty evident Covid has affected him.

He had one assist against St.Lou and that was making a 5 foot horizontal pass in our end .
also he’s not doing anything positive at this time regardless of how many excuses are being made for him .

He can take every draw and still play wing. The rationale is that the game looks really fast for him. Not just the lack of foot speed but he isn't reading and anticipating quick enough to compensate.
$11M for the second line centre who they couldn't afford and doesn't fit the timeline is now an albatross with 3 more years after this. Who could have guessed?
Hopefully the new GM presses him to waive this summer. New guy will have no loyalty to him and can make things uncomfortable if he doesn't play ball. Leafs need to get out of this contract.

plus minus is one of the most misleading stats out there. Has nothing to do with individual defensive capabilities…
his foot speed is a bit down and he looks sluggish right now. But he’s not as horrible as people are making him out to seem. We always have to have a couple of players to shit on. Seems right now it’s Tavares and Holl’s turn.
whos gonna replace him as 2C? We already know Nylander can’t play Center effectively. Is Kerfoot good enough to play 2nd line C?
Maybe if we kept McCann we would have a temporary solution

No, they couldn't afford him because his signing came at the expense of the quality depth they'd built and cost them a 1st round pick (Seth Jarvis) to shed salary. Between Brown, Kapanen, Kadri and the list goes on with other potential adds we didn't hear about but didn't happen because of money.
I like Tavares, too. But if you put aside you fandom for a minute, this was never a smart move for the Maple Leafs organization given where they were at and where he'd slot into their roster. $11M is wayyyyy too much for your second line centre slot, even if Tavares was still an elite #1C.
again I disagree. That’s the beauty of opinion. There was nothing wrong with the Tavares signing if you bridge the kids. trading a first is because they signed Marleau to a horrible contract that has nothing to do with Tavares. That was a stupid decision by Lou. So not sure why you’re even mentioning that.
additionally we didn’t move Kadri because of Cap implications. We could have kept him. We moved him because they didn’t trust him not to be suspended.

to each their own. I agree he hasn’t been good, but that whole line has been trash yet Tavares takes the brunt. Whole line deserves criticism

Choosing to use 11M on a 2nd line centre in an (approx) 82M cap does not seem like the best use of cap dollars.
He didn’t bridge the kids, though. And under no circumstances should any team pay $11M to a player on their second line. If they didn’t have a 20 year old franchise centre in Matthews then sure.
Regardless of what you think of Marleau his contract was on the salary forecast. Adding Tavares created the need to move it - they could have kept him and let him play out the final year while still keeping players.
If Kadri was traded for anything other than money Dubas is even dumber than I give him credit for. They need an emotional leader and they haven’t had one since he left. In return they got possibly the most vanilla player in the league who skates fast but doesn’t play fast.
