The problem is who will take him if he waive NTC?
Leafs would have to eat $4M AAV. Never going to happen anyway. Why would he waive? LTIR is the only remedy and use the savings to sign a 2C and top four dman. It’s sounds mean to talk this way about a good guy like JT but as Josh Donaldson said “this isn’t the try league, it’s the get the job done league” or something like that.

Yeah it is very confusing how stubborn Keefe is about this. Marner and Tavares have had great chemistry in the past and Matthews doesn't need Marner to drive his line. He'll prob try it for a game or two and then go right back to what we have now.
My guess is they’re doing everything to keep Matthews happy because they want to be able to re-sign him. Helping him win the Rocket while playing with Marner and be well on his way to being the greatest Leaf scorer in history will be a big part of the pitch. Is that the best decision for the team? Hard to say given their lack of team balance and playoff success

16.81 Million over 3 years left on his deal as of July 2nd. That's 5.6 million per year, not advocating for or against but I'm sure they could find some teams interested.
I think Johnny would have a good time in the desert , the dry heat is good on his old bones and they’d love how his deal is structured .

Trade him to the Rangers in the off season, they missed out on Eichel and he'd do well with Panarin. Im almost certain the $11,000,000 would be better spent elsewhere

Can we ask Isles GM Lou take him back to long island? (Mean tho)
I really think he stinks. Never like him.

But the $11M cap hit is a problem in a flat cap environment. This is the problem that he presents to the Leafs. Why would another team agree to absorb the hit?

Both JT and Muzzy signed here long term to retire here as they want to raise their families close to their own families. In both cases it was not a pure hockey decision. Neither are gonna waive anything folks. All of you are in a massive pipe dream.

If you missed this the first time, read it now. Tavares isn't going anywhere.

Certainly it would take a number of teams out of the running but for non cap teams, 5.6 per for 3 years for JT is a great deal.

Surprised it’s even discussed.

Isn't he taking close to $USD9.4M this year and next 2 years if I understand correctly?

Kadri was the guy JT replaced, if he could've only kept his head and not seen red every time he saw a Boston player in a prone position. I wouldn't have minded if JT took that San Jose offer in hindsight. It's not like he's an asset at $11m when we could've conceivably had Pietrangelo with that kinda miss ney

throw JT on AM's wing , he's to slow to do anything else other than vulture around down low near the net and with AM/MM covering the rest of the ice it'll allow mumbles to play to the only strength he has left without being a liability
