Stop kicking cans … maybe ????i've hurt my foot endlessly kicking the can down the road for JT , lol
Also pretty funny if anyone thinks JT is waiving his NTC. He’s retiring a leaf. It’s more than just hockey. His wife has her own clinic/practice in Toronto, his whole family is here. I’m sure he’ll do the Spezza deals once his contract is up. But he ain’t going anywhere

easier to get him to waive than getting him to agree to the islandEven if he did waive his NTC, no one is taking on that contract. He isn't going anywhere until it's over.
Only question is whether the Leafs are willing to Robidas Island their captain.
I'm not in favor of stripping the captaincy or any emotional, punitive act, but I wonder how much the franchise giving him everything from money to the captaincy and keys to the franchise kind of impact his game and the pressure he feels when he struggles?
When he came here I figured he was the Marian Hossa of the Leaf build, not Toews and Kane rolled into one, so when they gave him everything it just didn't seem right. It was the kids that brought the Leafs back from the dead and it never felt like it was his team to lead.
It's like they wrote the Stamkos homecoming narrative, expecting Stamkos to bring along the new core, only for the core to do it themselves. Then they bring in Tavares and cast him into that role.
Do you think there's a possibility of Auston walking to UFA? Not sure if he wants to stay if Leafs don't have any playoff success and/or core gets blown up. Dubas might not also be here in 3 years so who knows he wants to stick around for new mgmt.Seems like Matthews wrote himself out after his stunt. I think Rielly would have been the only other guy they may have realistically considered besides Tavares, but they decided to go with the hometown hero.
The Leafs will likely transition the captaincy to Matthews once he commits to the team long term. Marner will be his #2 and Rielly/Tavares will be the veteran 'A' presence. Same thing happened in San Jose multiple times (Marleau and Thornton). Happened to Dustin Brown and he led them to two Cups. Happened to Modano and Linden. All of these guys stuck around for years and some even continued as assistants under the new captain.
Until then, Tavares is a fine captain. I am not rushing to strip him of his captaincy, especially after a couple months of post-Covid play where he is fully capable of playing much better.

I was and am serious , great pointsYou may not be serious but actually I agree. Realistically when he was signed, and based on his age, the Leafs best opportunity to make a run was always more likely to be in the first half of his deal. That was the period of our young core entering their peak and JT still being in his prime more or less. The problem is we've passed that point; From the time he signed the opportunity has been there to advance in the playoffs but they've scotched all three opportunities, starting in 2019 against Boston, with the last two post season results being completely unacceptable (though JT had no role in the last).
I haven't given up but they have to show something this year.
I don’t think they ever intended Tavares to be the captain. Matthews mooning that security guard in Arizona kind of forced their hand, which is unfortunate.
I do think Matthews’ personality suits the role better. JT seems too robotic and serious and I’m sure he puts way too much pressure on himself.
