Also pretty funny if anyone thinks JT is waiving his NTC. He’s retiring a leaf. It’s more than just hockey. His wife has her own clinic/practice in Toronto, his whole family is here. I’m sure he’ll do the Spezza deals once his contract is up. But he ain’t going anywhere

Even if he did waive his NTC, no one is taking on that contract. He isn't going anywhere until it's over.

Only question is whether the Leafs are willing to Robidas Island their captain.

It's quite alarming how many slumps or periods of struggles Tavares has had since he signed here.

To be fair to him, he seems to always come out of these periods playing really good hockey.

But for someone at his cap hit, and his importance, he needs to be so much better.

For a captain of one of Canada's biggest teams, he seems to be pretty immune to criticism compared to some other guys on this team.

If we end up trading for Miller that gives us 2 runs with Tavares at LW without gutting our C depth.

easier to get him to waive than getting him to agree to the island

if it was only up to the team then i'd send JT to the island with some company -Holl-Muzzin-Mzarek-Kerfoot-Dubie

that would give the new GM 25m to re shape this team in the off season

I'm not in favor of stripping the captaincy or any emotional, punitive act, but I wonder how much the franchise giving him everything from money to the captaincy and keys to the franchise kind of impact his game and the pressure he feels when he struggles?

When he came here I figured he was the Marian Hossa of the Leaf build, not Toews and Kane rolled into one, so when they gave him everything it just didn't seem right. It was the kids that brought the Leafs back from the dead and it never felt like it was his team to lead.

It's like they wrote the Stamkos homecoming narrative, expecting Stamkos to bring along the new core, only for the core to do it themselves. Then they bring in Tavares and cast him into that role.

Seems like Matthews wrote himself out after his stunt. I think Rielly would have been the only other guy they may have realistically considered besides Tavares, but they decided to go with the hometown hero.

The Leafs will likely transition the captaincy to Matthews once he commits to the team long term. Marner will be his #2 and Rielly/Tavares will be the veteran 'A' presence. Same thing happened in San Jose multiple times (Marleau and Thornton). Happened to Dustin Brown and he led them to two Cups. Happened to Modano and Linden. All of these guys stuck around for years and some even continued as assistants under the new captain.

Until then, Tavares is a fine captain. I am not rushing to strip him of his captaincy, especially after a couple months of post-Covid play where he is fully capable of playing much better.

Do you think there's a possibility of Auston walking to UFA? Not sure if he wants to stay if Leafs don't have any playoff success and/or core gets blown up. Dubas might not also be here in 3 years so who knows he wants to stick around for new mgmt.

I guess there is a possibility. I don't think there is a strong possibility, especially if we are as good as we are right now.

I do think that if he wants to be captain here, it will be after he signs a nice long term deal with us.

We aren't going to name him captain after taking it away from Tavares only for him to go to another team soon after.

JT should be judged after this PO …….

You may not be serious but actually I agree. Realistically when he was signed, and based on his age, the Leafs best opportunity to make a run was always more likely to be in the first half of his deal. That was the period of our young core entering their peak and JT still being in his prime more or less. The problem is we've passed that point; From the time he signed the opportunity has been there to advance in the playoffs but they've scotched all three opportunities, starting in 2019 against Boston, with the last two post season results being completely unacceptable (though JT had no role in the last).

I haven't given up but they have to show something this year.

Matthews isn’t going anywhere. The leafs are going to make him the highest paid player in the NHL. He’s in the hockey Mecca. He loves the limelight, where is he walking to? Arizona? To play at ASU, like come on. Players don’t walk in the NHL.

I don’t think they ever intended Tavares to be the captain. Matthews mooning that security guard in Arizona kind of forced their hand, which is unfortunate.

I do think Matthews’ personality suits the role better. JT seems too robotic and serious and I’m sure he puts way too much pressure on himself.

I heard through the grapevine that Barb and Joe Tavares filed a missing persons report with the police for their son.

His name is John in case anyone has seen him?

I agree. He should be somewhere a little lower on the pecking order, wearing an A being the quiet lead by example assistant. Not the focal point of the franchise symbolically. It’s not his personality and I’m not sure if it helps him.

Would rather have Kadri

Yep. Joe Sakic and Steve Yzerman should be on Dubas' No Reply List.

I know a lot of members looked at the suspensions as something indicative of deficiency on Kadri's part. It was always curious how small his supporters were in the face of like behavior by Boston and overlooked by the refs (league).

Don't mind Kerfoot at all and no one could have seen Kadri leading the Avs (Damn!) in points. But the caphit, the grit, the overt love of the team...

Yep. Would rather have Kadri...and had an appropriate address on defense.
