I have said it already and I'll say it again: Threads like this will be created every year in the next 4-5 years. People will always say and anticipate he is done, yet he will continue to be a horse, doing those little things and play the game the right way. He never, ever relied on speed. He became a star without it.
Players like him simply age better because he is just too strong, smart and skilled. Yes he will be even slower, yet somehow still freaking effective.

He has found a way to be an impact player every night despite his lack of speed.

It's a true testament to his character and work ethic, considering the horrific injury he sustained not long ago.

He just knows where to be. It’s hard to stop that kind of player. Yesterday he fell, got up in a second and went straight to the net and scored a second later.

He chose to come here. Turned down more money from San Jose and the Islanders, turned down interest from other teams because he wanted to be in Toronto. You gotta love a guy like that, its why I've never been that critical when he's going through a cold stretch. We went a lot of years without a star choosing to come here.

Yep. The way he’s playing, even a declining Tavares will be a good two way 2nd line C capable of 60+ points in his last year of the contract and then a very cheap deal after that to retire as a Leaf.

Indeed. He's a coaches dream, a pro who you can always count on to do his job game after game the best he can, and that's pretty damn good. Man that was a sweet pass to Nylander to get things started last night. JT's a beauty!

Johnny T skates just fine, if that wasn't case then he wouldn't have been one of the automatic selections to Team Canada throughout his prime.

I'm pretty sure he means if he had elite speed.

Point per game center.

Great faceoff guy.

Defensively responsible.

Elite in the greasy areas of the ice.

Glue guy in the dressing room.

Makes others better.

Yep, he's Johnny Superstar.

also arguably one of the best in the league (ok after Sid) at deflections / tips.

"We don't need you"

That thread on the mains is hilarious, we have some nucks/jets/isles fans claiming he'd be their 3rd line C...lmao.

He's been great this year, easily our most complete forward and to me he's been our MVP (skaters only, Soup is the man) He's doing it all. Scoring/Defending/Faceoffs, a real complete player.

I like Johnny and all but Matthews is far and away the most complete player on the team.

Johnny T is what Canucks fans wish and sometimes are delusional enough to believe what Bo Horvat is. Also Jets fans are finally seeing just how great Schiefele is now that he doesn't have Wheeler to piggy back. Isles fans are just salty and petty. But I like Isles fans and I like Trotz so I won't bad mouth them. Barzal isn't in the same league as JT though, not now, and not at their respective ages.

I know. I wasn't trying to give anyone a hard time, I just think you can say that about anyone, like if McDavid had Gretzky's vision, he'd be the GOAT or if Marner only had a better shot, he'd be our best player or whatever else. We could make posts like that about every player on our team, or every player in the league, I just don't see the point.

I'll admit, I thought JT was going to be a ~50 pt player this year. I've been worried about his regression. But man, he's playing great hockey right now. IMO the best since his first year with us.

I was the same. A noticeable decline last season, and then he got a potential career ending injury.

Hes looking great though. I loved the signing at the time. Then I started to sour on it, but for the moment he’s looking good.

It was getting ugly last year when he wasn't getting much 5v5 production and I was starting to think the posters who were against signing JT because of his skating and potential decline might have been right. Nice to see a guy who left money on the table (yes he did, Isles offered 8x11m even if you do not believe Sharks offered 7x13m) to play for our Leafs turn it around and not have to read posts questioning his skating, contact and the C on his chest. Putting up points with both Nylander and Marner which should shut down the claims that he needs Marner to succeed.

I couldn't believe the people who were disrespecting our Captain. No doubt from some of them it was to be expected because of their overall lack of knowledge and/or maturity, but I certainly was surprised by some because I had expected so much more from them. It's kind of like that for all the nonsense Marner inspires.

He is playing like what is expected , should have waited for the appreciation thread until playoffs though
Or we could acknowledge his great play now.

My memory isn't always the best, but I certainly don't recall anyone asking for your opinion - or needing your permission. Don't like it now? Log off until the playoffs because you add nothing.

He's looking better than his first season here, and he has settled into the captain's role....more vocal, more emotion.

The Leafs have done a great job of slowing the pace of games allowing them to play with the puck and create chances. They should excel when teams don’t play physical, tight checking, focussed hockey.
