Tavares is not a good fit for the kind of team the GM wants. I like Tavares in the right environment. He needs to be on a grinding type of team not the fast high-powered offense that the Leafs seem to want. I like his toughness, his grit and even his work ethic. One of the few Leafs that will absorb the hit and keep trying. I place no blame on him for anything that has happened with him here.As a a dedicated horse player, we have a saying, horses for courses. JT is plying his trade on the wrong course..
Nei- gh-gh-gh! Tavares is ready for the glue factory.

one of JT's best games of the season tonight. I didn't even see ONE giveaway, and he's usually a giveaway machine
Yeah, such a valuable stat. Lead by Tkachuk, Draisaitl, Huberdeau, Gaudreau, Barzal. Heck, even that scrub McDavid has more than him. You really know your hockey!

If you compare Tavares to his peers, he's really not worth the money. Stamkos is older and has 97 points. Tavares has the same PPG as Kyrou and Jesper Bratt. 75 points just isn't a lot in todays NHL. It's like the equivalent of 60-65 in 2012 before league scoring went through the roof. He's not even in the top 43 in ppg (60 GP minimum).

If you consider the fact there's 40 forwards who score at a higher PPG, there's at least 10-15 defensmen more valuable and 5-10 more goalies more valuable then him, I don't even know if he's a top 60 player.

I wasn't a fan of Mik in tonights 3 on 3. Not sure what you expected from Nylander the way Mik played in overtime. Aimless offense eating clock.

I actually liked Mik in OT. He wasn’t able to get a lot of offensive looks but his ability to rag the puck around and have a peek here and there was way more preferable to Nylander and Tavares not having the puck and hanging on for dear life.

I don't have a problem with this opinion I just don't understand why Nylander needs to be called out here. This ragging Mik did was a pure solo mission there's no plays for Nylander to make with him.

Maybe the other poster was calling out Nylander? My point is I don’t like the Tavares-Nylander duo specifically because they have zero chemistry in good times and Tavares’ game is not strong in open ice. Nylander himself is a neutral ingredient but depends on how he’s playing on any given night. Sometimes you get Peter Forsberg-lite, sometimes you get Michael Nylander.

Yeah I was explaining my issue with the post you quoted. I was replying to someone who called out Nylander for doing nothing in OT.

Fair points about Tavares that duo just doesn't seem to work this season.

We all knew his best years would be at the start of the contract, I think most of us just believed that we would start seeing the decay of footspeed and shot more slowly than it has been in reality.

With that being said, he's a grinder, and in a playoff series, I think he will show his real value. The game gets tighter and there's less room, and I think that favours him.

We're cheering for you, John!

Shouldn't we wait and see how much these breakout seasons will cost the Devils and Blues? In terms of the W column Bratt and Tavares aren't even in the same tier. This isn't Yahoo Fantasy.

This is exactly right. We're officially in the "it's only 3 more years" phase of the contract but that was the deal all along. He was a prized UFA. The Leafs were hoping for an early payoff that never came. Now they have to live with it. It's a cap hit but it's not like he's the worst guy on the team. There's nothing wrong here, it's still a happy story.

FWIW, for Tavares' career 33% of his goals and assists have come on the PP. This season he's at 35% .. so his production is right in line with career norms. The PP offense isn't inflating his point totals any differently than the past.
First three seasons in Toronto, PP accounted for 26% of his points. This year, it's 35%.

Over his time here, most stats are getting worse:

Pts/60

SAT rel%

As you can see from the above, his points are coming much more from secondary assists, where his wingers are doing most of the work, and from the PP.

Top 5 cap hit in the NHL for a guy who skates like a chubby kid in bantam.

Tavares was invisible in game 1. Skating is a major issue now. He does not deserve to wear the C, its Matthews and Marners team. He is making less than 8 million in real dollars for the rest of his contract. Easy choice to keep Nylander over Tavares but I do not see any teams lining up to get Tavares.

81 percent from the dot, 3 blocks, 1 point, sent Willie in all alone and almost buried one fighting out front, but you be you. SMH.

Damn, some of the takes here. FWIW, you could do a lot worse than having JT as your 2C. And, few teams have a better one than ours.
