All he is trying to accomplish at this point is one save his job two beat his first round opponent the leafs . You have to draft star players to win the cup

I'm fine with getting Romanov a steady non-puck mover. He's the puck mover on the bottom pair. Edmundson and Petry work well having one puck mover and one stay at home D.

Romanov is nowhere near Petry in terms of puck moving skills right now. You are underrating the importance of having a smart and good puck mover as a partner. Having a player who can make precise passes so you're not constantly fighting the puck will do wonders.

We need to focus on top 4, and you know this is where they'll play Merrill. This ain't good.

This is textbook Marc Bergervin. If he thinks Jon Merill is better than Victor Mete he is beyond any saving point at this time. I thought he had learned a little bit last summer but nope he's still MB he just was in a good position to land players for cheap mainly because of COVID. He'll need to be fired next summer he's Rejean Houle 2.0 at this point.

You don’t feel we lack mobility like a pp qb or you feel bergevin will not make this move . We definitely have extra bodies Ufa’s to accomplish this.

If this is all he does then he needs to be shot out of a cannon. It's inexcusable.

We have needed mobility for years, and we haven't done anything about it. Bergevin genuinely thinks that Chiarot is a good dman in the top 4, Weber is still one of the best dmen in the league, and Edmundson is also a good top 4 dman. He thinks that Romanov is an outstanding rookie and a luxury on the bottom pair, and will say that Merril is having a good season so he's a good dman too. Don't be surprised if he thinks we have the best defense in the league.

Dunn might be a fools' errand. From what I've read, the Blues were doing everything in their power to keep him away from tough matchups. Not really a description of Webers' partner and he would require spending some real assets.

Our man should probably have been Devon Toews, but seems like we weren't interested.

This is exactly why advanced stats will never be taken seriously. Jon Merill is not anywhere close to be one of the best at anything. He's a depth dman. 7th on a winning team. 3rd pairing on a bad team. Top 4 in MB's heart. He'll look good here and there like Jordie Benn and people will get excited but at the end of the day he's not a regular top 6 on a cup winning team.

Yeah I agree. Also it's a relatively cheap depth move... if this makes Kulak the 7th D once we are healthy it's probably worth a shot.... we gave up very little..

I would love for Romanov to have a partner like Edmundson...

We don't need to focus on the top 4 and leave Kulak-Romanov as the bottom pair. We need to improve the Weber pair AND improve the Romanov pair.

Who did you want us to get for Romanov pair after we improved the Weber pair?
 
Puck moving defenceman is not what’s needed. You need another guy on the back end that can chip in offensively. Desperately. Petry provides it, Weber a little, then that’s it. No forward support offensively.

Yeah he has defensive issues and will have a difficult time shutting down the other teams top opponents. Chiarot can't do that either but at least Dunn scores, skate, and help forwards score.
 
Considering that the organization seems to still like Kulak, it doesn’t seem like we will be getting the top 4 mobile LHD we badly need...

I don’t think MB got Merrill to be our number 8 defenseman once Chiarot is back.

Chiarot-Weber
Edmundson-Petry
Kulak-Romanov
*Merrill

And until our top pairing defenseman is back :

Kulak-Weber
Edmundson-Petry
Merrill-Romanov

I don’t see many players available that fits the profile we should be looking for as Weber’s partner. Fowler and H.Lindholm are the only ones i can think of. Dunn, im not so sure is ready for tough matchups that comes with being Webs partner.
