Wish we had the capspace to go after Gibson in the off-season, but just don't see it happening for cap reasons.

If only we can get Tavares unloaded - we could do so much with this team.

Maybe he'd get that if he was playing good. No clue why you'd give all that up for a below average goalie with a huge cap hit.
You might be right, but at the same time, there are plenty of examples of trade value not matching recent on-ice performance. Reputation goes further than it probably should.

Also, some teams (Edmonton, Toronto, maybe Colorado) may be beyond desperate to upgrade goaltending if it fails them again.

In terms of teams where it would make sense : COL (but cap situation will be tensed, esp with the need to resign Kadri / find a 2C), LAK (but Petersen would go the other way so I don t see it likely), EDM (if not on his NTC), VGK (if they somehow find cap space), NJD (they have had a bad season but given Hamilton signing, I believe they want to go for it, they have plenty of cap space with Subban off the books), WSH/PIT (if they were all in for the last years of that core but given the fact they have not even spent their top assets at TDL it is far from being sure…), TOR (cap situation is tough but they need a great goalie)

In terms of value, it has to be higher than Kuemper who got 1st + B prospect (worth c. 2nd)

Gibson + Steel
for
1st(22 or 23 dont matter to me) + Holloway / bourgault + Koskinen/Smith + Kassian + 2024 2nd

I think assuming toronto gets knocked out in round 1 again.... toronto prob doing a massive change in off season

Nylander + Mrazek
for
Gibson
maybe adds to even out
Not getting adds on top of Nylander
and I think this trade would take the route of top prospects/draft picks and lower tier roster players
Highly doubt they move or even consider moving Nylander for a goalie upgrade

Umm yeah lol throw a better team infront of him and there's no reason why he cant play the the best of his ability and he's a pretty damn goalie last time I checked atleast
I don't care how pretty he is...

He has been bad for 3 years and Stolarz is outplaying him on the same team. If he was a pretty damn GOOD goalie the last time you checked, maybe you should check more often.

That's not to say he can't be better on a better team, but which team is going to take that risk given his contract?

Does not make sense for ANA. If they trade Gibson it means they are not contending in the next 2 years, and Nylander only has two years left on his contract. Where is the logic ?

I never understand why people think it is okay to check the stats and say shit like this.

No Ducks fan will ever say Stolarz is better then Gibson. We watch every game they play. Don’t you think if it was the case you would see Ducks fans trying to dumb Gibson all the time?

If Colorado chokes again then they should get him. Vegas will try Im sure too. Edmonton is obviously on his no trade list. Toronto might be too but they make a lot of sense.

Worst Case, Ontario
The "bad stats = sucks" crowd that flood into every one of these threads, really have nothing to bring to the conversation. Anyone can read an eliteprospects page, but there's a reason why teams employ pro scouts, stats in themselves (adjusted or not) do not tell the entire story and never do. Anyone coming here to declare Stolarz a better goalie is certainly kidding themselves if trying to inform anyone about these players. Nothing against Stolie but that's just not the case.

It's ironic that many of these seem to be Leafs fans. They must either have short memories or not even watch their own team - it was exactly two months ago today that Gibson stole a point against Toronto with a godly performance.

Anyone watching with the slightest notion of evaluating talent can plainly see a guy who at his best, is capable of performing at a level only matched by the very best goalies in the league.

This is not a question of "where did his talent go" but rather "why does he no longer consistently perform like an elite talent?"

The answer is pretty obvious to those who watch or even just follow him closely and apply a bit of context. Gibson comes out of the gate strong each season when there is still something to play for. Just look back to threads from the start of this year when he was standing on his head and everyone was declaring him elite again. But as the team fades in mediocrity and more falls on his shoulders, it's clear from his body language that it starts to weigh on him. There is undoubtedly a sense of self preservation in terms of not pushing himself to turn a 5-0 loss into a 2-0 loss.

Right or wrong, and as alarming as it may be in itself, there probably isn't a player in the league with a bigger divide between how he looks when he's on (elite) and when he's not. But this is a goalie who had the best career SV% of all time prior to the team in front of him cratering, and he still shows completely capable of performing to that level on a given night. His talent is 100% going to be more recognized by GMs, scouts and also his peers, more so than these folks who take a glance at his stats and then come here to tell us all about him.

Oilers and Leafs make the obvious most sense, but as noted both likely on his NTC.

I think Edmonton gets him. There's a reason why the Oilers have Yamomoto on their top line, showcasing him before dealing him this summer in a package for Gibson.

Just like the last Gibson thread, I feel like I’m taking crazy pills when I read these proposals. I don’t care how bad the team in front of him is. If he was still good, the talent would shine through. His play the last 3 seasons is laughably bad. I get Toronto and Edmonton are desperate, but ffs…

Some posters just are way too cringe. Most Leaf Fans know Gibson is still an elite goalie - better to just ignore the stat watchers.

I'm confident Gibson would give us vezina level goaltending if we got him, the only problem is cap space on our end - even with Mrazek going the other way

Wild have 16 skaters coming in at $59 mill per cap friendly. Add $12 mill for the dead cap puts them at $71 mill. They need 7 skaters. If you are adding in Gibson and taking out Talbot that is another $3 mill. So that puts them at $74 mill with 7 skaters to fill the 23 man roster.
well shit, I didn’t even account for that 😵‍💫 good catch. ah well, Fiala could still be acquired by other means

How many Ontario boys need to come home before people stop with this "no one will go to the Leafs" crap? If Edmonton wasn't where it is physically, they'd get lots of UFA's just because McDavid.

Leafs have been a playoff team every year since 2016, have a good crop of ELC ready support players and their core players in their primes. They are in a city comparable to any USA market, with downsides being COVID regulations, winter, and media scrutiny. But they also have the best facilities in the league and well funded off ice training staff.

If a player thinks the Leafs will be a playoff team, they would absolutely consider Toronto. Putting them with Edmonton and other Canadian cities is just ignoring reality. Toronto has been a big UFA destination the past several years between NHLers and European players.
