I feel like he needs good pp time to thrive. Would he get that in Montreal? I suppose he could work with someone like Matheson but I’d think Montreal would want someone more defensively minded opposed to JC.

Care to explain your reasoning for this comment? All deadline rentals are essentially a waste if the idea is cup or bust. The Ducks young core gained valuable experience making it to the second round and even giving Vegas a better fight than Colorado did. They may not have even had that opportunity if it weren’t for acquiring JC.

The reasoning is that the Ducks aren't quite there yet and shouldn't be dealing quality picks for 36 year old rentals.

Carlson wasn't great in the playoffs and it would have been smarter to deal that pick for someone who would have helped beyond this season (eg. Parayko).

-I'm neutral on the Carlson rental. Maybe he helped the Ducks get into the playoffs, and that experience is invaluable, but maybe they would have gotten in without him, too. And Verbeek could have packaged that 1st for someone like Parayko that will be with the Ducks for several seasons.
-Carlson was awful against Vegas. He's slow and his legs are gone.
-He's not worth $10M x 2 imo, good luck to Philly or whomever gets him!

Plus the clear signal from management/owner that they're willing to invest in the team to make them better 'now' rather than selling off assets at the TDL. That's hard to quantify but it's far from meaningless.

Moving on is probably for the best. He was great when he initially arrived but that can be explained by new team/new situation bounce. Further on into the playoffs he just looked worn out. With the team so young and fast, if he stayed he'd probably be worn out/worn down late into next season before the playoffs. Father time is cruel at times. Appreciate what he brought, wish him nothing but the best, and reasonably glad he's not coming back.

I agree that it would’ve been smarter to have used the pick on someone with term. However, Parayko, as you suggested, would’ve cost much more. The rumor was that they wanted a 1st and top prospect or player like Minty. It’s one thing to deal a mid first away and another to deal it away with a recent 10th overall who’s starting to look like he’s turning a corner. And I’m not sure what you mean by “not there yet”. They made it just as far as other teams who are “already there”. Sure, they need to improve still, but without a doubt, that experience was very valuable and worth a mid first.
