Joe Veleno. Suspended 5 games.

As a Wings fan... Hate this. Joe seems like a super good kid trying to break into the line up but this puts his Red Wing figure in jeopardy IMO. Yzerman traded Vrana for nothing because he couldn't trust him, curious what happens to Joe. If it means hes gone for a lengthy suspension or who knows, its deserved. Can honestly say I don't remember a wreckless or dangerous play by him since Ive watched, very out of character but maybe someone who has watched him in junior can have more input.

I only saw this a few minutes ago, I couldn't watch the game live. I'm frankly horrified. What kind of an asshole do you have to be to do this. Probably suspension until the end of the tournament.

The longest suspension that I can remember in an IIHF event was for Mika Hannula, I believe it was 5 games and he hadn't played at the WC since that ban.
Gary Suter was suspended 6 gamed by the IIHF and 4 games by the NHL for breaking his stick on Andrei Lomakin's face at the Canada Cup (which was under NHL jurisdiction). He never missed an international game because USA Hockey used a roster spot for him at the 1990 World Championships (which he had no intention of going to). He also was allowed by the IIHF to play at the 1998 Olympics despite being under NHL suspension at the time.

That’s what is most distressing about this. He’s never once shown any inkling of being a dirty player. In fact we all want him to be more mean out there. And all the character reports about him are glowing, starting from juniors. This makes no sense. He obviously lost his mind for a fraction of a second, and while that is no justification, I hope people can realise this is not what Joe Veleno is about.

Really surprised to see this happen. It is a round robin game at the World Championships. Not game 7 of the playoffs. (No excuse to happen anytime)

Veleno also should find the time before he leaves town to personally apologize to Nino for that crap. Assuming he is willing to meet, he owes him that. I am sure his agent can arrange it or he can get the number through somebody he knows in the league, but I hope he does that.

Apparently he did that already after the game.

I like Veleno as a player. Always did. More than my countryman Niederreiter. However, there's no excuse for what he did. This was intent to injure in the worst possible way and it's painful to watch. Not something you can just say sorry for. Whoever does this should be banned from hockey for years. This is the sort of stuff that could and probably should go to court as well. Skate blades are worse than many knifes and no matter how frustrated you are, you can't use them as a weapon. That's a red line that just cannot be crossed.

I am late on this since I missed the Canada/Swiss game but I would like to reiterate that Veleno should be kicked out of the tournament for that. Crazy dangerous thing to do.

Gary Suter is in the conversation for dirtiest/nastiest player of all time. Such a great player but over the line more often than not.

Well that's one way to make a name for yourself.

Should get 2 games suspension IMO. And obviously no criminal charges, it was ridiculous when Montreal fans called the police on Chara and it would still be ridiculous today.
Yeah, it's not Parros who decides this.

Nino already said he tried to apologize after the game. Based on the fact that he said "tried to apologize" I don't think Nino accepted the apology.

That was my comment on assuming he was willing to meet, Nino doesn't have to at all. I am glad to hear Veleno did try to make the effort. More the makeup of the player we know in Detroit, but man still disgusted every time I see this play. Our casual fans, which is a far higher number will never really know a thing about this though for those thinking this might have bigger consequences than whatever lengthy suspension he receives from the IIHF. That is in no way to minimize this, but historically people don't care when a line is crossed in international hockey.

That's ugly. Surprised Veleno would do that.

The guy who dove like a fill-in-the-blank 10 seconds later and cried all the way to the bench like he was the aggrieved party? Nah, not surprised at all. When someone says something like "that isn't who I am"... sorry, it's exactly who you. Character is a revealed trait.

I think he's done in the NHL as well.
The PA would pretty quickly defeat this if that happened. I don't see the Wings cutting him over this and people need to remember we are kind of on the extreme of hockey fans in our little HF sliver. Your average fan in Detroit, won't even know this happened because they aren't watching the World Championships or the highlights. Again this is not a defense, I just think people thinking permanent ban, NHL complications are forgetting we have horrible World Championship plays that have not carried that kind of impact at all.

I honestly don't know what to think of this. Absolutely brutal, disgusting play. Joe has never played this type of game. Of course he needs a suspension. I wouldn't be perfectly ok with him being kicked out of the tournament and the red wings doing something also. Moving forward I don't know what to think. I don't want this to define him as a player. But honestly it's going to stick in my mind like a sore thumb. Every team we play when they see him will think of this play. Every time I see Lucic I think of what a scum bag he is. Based off one game he played against Detroit. Not even really taking into consideration the other shit he has done. But Veleno seems like a good guy. I hope he can learn from this. Ugh how disappointing. Sorry if it seems like I'm over blowing this. I'm just not happy about this at all.
