Boo. Hopefully Borucki and Merryweather push him off the roster when they get back.

If they can keep him away from high leverage, Dolis is good to have back. But I'm not convinced Montoyo agrees about the leverage thing.

Especially with Cimber and Romano pitching yesterday, I can pretty much guarantee Dolis comes in late if it's a close game today.

Deep Left Field: Conversations with Canadians Larry Walker, John Axford, Dan Shulman and Joe Siddall

July 1, 2021

This Canada Day in Deep Left Field, we have an all-Canadian episode. Mike Wilner talks with Larry Walker, the greatest Canadian position player in MLB history, checks in with John Axford about pitching for Team Canada and working his way back to the big leagues, and convenes a round table of the only Canadians to broadcast Blue Jays play-by-play on the radio with Dan Shulman and Joe Siddall.

Yeah, that's the problem...He's kind of like the Panik of the bullpen. Montoyo just keeps throwing him out there.

TFC is heading back to Toronto. Jays should be able to start playing games back in Toronto for the last couple months of the season. Hopefully with a few fans.

Bichette was named an ASG reserve. So that means 4 Jays at the game. A little surprised Ray wasn't chosen as a pitcher, but given that they still do the "every team has to have a rep" bit I can see them holding off on adding another Blue Jay so that they can fill out the rest of the AL spots.

Yeah, Manoah and Romano should have gotten consideration, too. Their numbers look even more lite.

Manoah hasn't been up long enough to get real consideration. Not unless he came up and was explosively dominant every time out. But he hasn't been. he's had some lockdown stellar efforts, but also some shaky ones that mean his numbers look good on the surface, but belie a high potential to implode if things go a little bit south for him.

And as much as Romano probably deserved consideration, all-star relievers tend to come in two flavors:

1) the "we need to put someone from this garbage team on the ASG roster because a dumb rule says we have to, so we'll just pick a pretty OK reliever that's not as infected with the taint of failure as the rest of his club." choices (aka "the Steve Delabar"* or "the charity choice".)

2) big name closers from big name teams, usually with big save totals because all-star selectors love the cult of saves and franchises with built-in hype.

Your AL All-Star bullpen is:

Matt Barnes
Aroldis Chapman
Ryan Pressly
Liam Hendriks
Gregory Soto

Soto is unabashedly a Category 1 choice. The other 4 are Category 2s, representing 4 of the top 5 spots on the AL saves leaderboard (the missing one is Angels closer Raisel Iglasias) and representing Boston, New York, Houston, and Chicago respectively.

*Yes, I'm aware Delabar was an all-star because of a weird fan-vote thing that became a meme. Doesn't matter, he was clearly there because the Jays were crap and he was a nice, inoffensive, low-risk way to appease the need to have a Blue Jay on the roster.

SWR battered around again . That’s a drag.

Otoh, so many bats from AAA to A-adv.

If Cubs were to pay salary for Bryant to a team like OAK or TB, what type of return could they expect?

Mark P

Let's see, maybe a three-prospect trade package headlined by a top 100 guy. Not Wander, Brujan, or Soderstrom, but the next tier down in either organization.

For the Rays, maybe someone like Edwards or Walls, considering they're so loaded with middle infielders. For the A's, maybe the Cubs would be interested in someone like an AJ Puk as a change of scenery candidate?

Seems like a lot for Bryant.

What type of price do you see CHI getting for Kimbrel?

Mark P
8:04
"Someone as good as Gleyber Torres, RIGHT?" --- every Cubs fan

If the Cubs did go into pure sell mode, I wonder if they might accept a pretty minor return (couple of ok but nothing special prospects) for Kimbrel if another team is willing to eat his entire salary. That seems like a more realistic scenario to me than the Cubs scoring a major prospect back

Doesn’t seem like enough.

So hear me out… could Matt Chapman (OAK) be available this off-season? Houston is stacked, Seattle and LAA are coming on strong, and Oakland never quite keeps their stars through arbitration, especially on a down season but with his arb platform high. Donaldson 2.0 perhaps?

Mark P
8:19
I mean, every Oakland fan reading that question cringed at the idea of another trade return like the one the A's got for Donaldson, but still.
Can't be ruled out, especially with Chapman/Olson getting more expensive in arbitration, and Olson looking like the better investment of the two at the moment.

My offer from the offseason of Biggio, Kay and Tellez for Chapman and Olsen is still on the table.

Who do you realistically see Toronto adding? Will they shop in the higher end of the market or make smaller movesv

Mark P
8:42
I can see a "higher-end" type of move made, assuming that such a move entails acquiring a player with multiple years of control. The Jays are playing the long game and don't have to necessarily go all-in for 2021.

8:46
Kirk, Groshans, Wood-Richardson plus for J Ram?
Mark P
8:47
That's a good offer. But honestly, Ramirez is so valuable that I think the Tribe would say "that's a pretty nice start, so what else?"

I’ll do Kirk, Groshans, Van Eyk and Hiraldo for Ramirez.

Kimbrel to Jays? They have budget and a dire relief need.
Mark P
8:53
Kimbrel makes quite a bit of sense for the Jays, considering they might fit the "team who can just absorb his contract" scenario I mentioned earlier.

Sign me up. Hatch for Kimbrel?

Indians would want major league ready talent for J Ram they don’t rebuild they reload and Teoscar Hernandez may have to be in a deal. J Ram is top 5 in WAR since the 2nd half of 2019 and is a 3 time mvp finalist

Hernandez is an interesting trade chip, in regards to a potential Ramirez deal. Again, I don't really expect Cleveland to move Ramirez at the deadline, or maybe even until the 2022-23 offseason.

But if you're Toronto and you have an overloaded outfield even before Dickerson comes off the IL....suddenly Hernandez looks kind of expendable. btw, I don't have the numbers in front of me, but Hernandez and Ramirez probably have pretty similar statlines since July 2019.

I would gladly do it. Or if they want long control and a cheaper player, Gurriel.

Cool story, bro.

They'd counter with Pearson, Martin or Groshans, and probably Kirk...and still expect Kay and Tellez. And that's being generous. There is no way Oakland is going to let us get away with grabbing Donaldson again. And then you've got to start thinking about extending those guys into their late 30s in just a few years (or keep the younger players for potentially 10).

And why Olson? Isn't Vladdy enough? Not like Montoyo uses the DH as a static position, anyway.

The only team that might overpay for Tellez is the Red Sox's what with Martinez approaching the end of his contract, Dalbac being pretty blah so far and that kid they have still some years away. Tellez seems to hit weirdly well in Fenway. Unlikely given its the same division.

I’ll do Kirk, Groshans, Van Eyk and Hiraldo for Ramirez.

Well, that's an overpayment. You could just as easily sign one of the many big SS's next year. Meanwhile, Kirk could be another Vladdy. And this still doesn't address the team's REAL issue: PITCHING. Three starters on expiring contracts in 2 years, people!
