Baseball trade values has the surplus value in this trade as

Marlins get: 0.7
Panik(0.6)
McInvale(0.1)

Jays get: -0.6
Cimber(0)
Dickerson(-0.6)

So the cash the Marlins would be sending would need to be 1.3 million to make it "even". Looking at his contact and the % of the year left. If we're paying 4.5 I don't think they're sending that much.

That being said I don't see how McInvale is worth more than Cimber or how Panik is worth 0.6 million more than his contract. We needed a pen arm and needed to not have Panik so it's easily worth it even if it's a small "loss" which I don't think it is.

Ha, I would love to know how they came up with those Panik and Cimber evaluations because... yikes.

Really nice deal. Get a much neeeded piece for BP and possibly another power bat. Gave up nothing pretty much all though Charlie would argue we gave up one of the best players in baseball in Panik.

Great trade even just as far as using it to dump Panik on someone else. But to get back a good reliever and maybe Dickerson while giving up a non-factor prospect, that's awesome.

I also don't think Dickerson is a prelude to amother outfielder trade as a necessity or even high probability. The deadline is July 30 and there's no guarantee Dickerson is even ready to come off the IL at that point or in solid game shape within short order. I don't think the Jays would deal an OF on the gamale that Dickerson can fill the spot. Instead I think they just banknotes Dickerson being a bench bat and continue to roll with the outfielders they have unless someone blows them away with a proposal that necessitates giving up Grichuk or Gurriel.

I know the Jays could DFA him but getting rid of Panik is a big plus because Espinal will get more playing time. Adding a solid reliever and then getting Dickerson is also great. Didn’t give up anything of value.
It's a solid low risk move that solves a need. Important to get it done now. I think more is comimg but closer to the deadline

Now the question is whether the Jays call up Kevin Smith to replace Panik on the bench.

That would be fun, but my main concern would be how little playing time he would get. They have four OF who should all play every day (eating up a lot of DH time), Semien, Bo, and Biggio at 2B/SS/3B who should all be in every day, and a utility guy who's played well and can fill in at any of those spots. I think he's better off staying in Buffalo and playing regularly unless an injury opens up more starting opportunities.

on the moves. having dickerson deal. why not. everytime i can remember him playing against the jays he always came through with a back braking hit or homerun.

another pen arms is what it is. like the fact its something different then another guy throwing 94+

I'm expecting Davis to be back up TBH. Another outfield for when an outfielder is DHing so you're not forced to go Biggio OF and Espinal 3rd. Pinch runner. Another center fielder and a good defensive replacement. Like you said little playing time for Smith and plus Smith would need a 40 man spot and there's already going to be a squeeze there as they're adding 1 guy to the 40 already via this trade and it looks like they already have 41 looking at fangraphs so they may need to drop 2 guys already. Not sure if the Matz Covid thing removed him from the 40 or not.

Wonder if they'll DFA Saucedo. It's harsh but they'll need a 26 man spot and a 40 man spot, they could option Saucedo and DFA Beasley or Allyeger, but maybe they'll just solve the problem with 1 guy. We're not that far off from 60 days since Borucki got hurt, maybe they put him on the 60 day IL and kick that can a week and a half down the road.

Smith would start at 3b and Biggio would be super sub

Seems like a good move.

Soft-tossing guys scare me a bit but Cimber has been a pretty solid guy for 4 years now and has multiple years of team control. And the price was basically nothing.

Panik seems like a good guy and I had no problems with him other than the over playing, but he had no role here with the signing of Semien and development of Espinol and freeing up his roster spot is addition by subtraction.

Not sure where Dickerson is a fit barring another move. But I guess he won't be available for at least a month so maybe things will sort out by then. The guy could rake for a few years but the pop seems to have gone out of his bat over the past two seasons as he's crossed age 30.

Panik being gone is enough of a win lmao.

Dickerson is nothing special. Cimber while having middle of the road metrics is still better than like 50 percent of the current bullpen so I call this a small win.

Cimber is also a side armer which totally doesn't make me froth at the mouth with rage in MLB 21

Looks like Bergen has been DFA'd, which is... whatever. He was one of a few options to clear a spot. So that balances out the Panik out-Dickerson/Cimber in part.

I still see 41 on the updated 40-man as well, so I assume you're right that they got a "free" replacement spot when Matz landed on the Covid IL. I know that was the case with Teoscar, so it would make sense. With Matz likely back soon, we'll probably just see Beasley DFA'd.

NO!!! Not Panik!

Seriously though, this is essentially Panik for a decent reliever and Rogers` money. Good trade.

Not sure what to do about Dickerson. The team is already hurting for outfielder space, so I don`t see him being used as another outfielder. Veteran presence? Flip him? Meh, would probably cost a prospect just to convince some other team to take him.

If he got healthy and they just ate the salary and flipped him somewhere else, that would be amazing. I can see him fitting in, though. With no one entrenched in the DH spot, they can afford to keep 5 OF on the roster.

C - McGuire
1B - Vlad
2B - Semien
3B - Biggio
SS - Bichette
OF - Gurriel, Springer, Teoscar
DH - Grichuk
Bench - Adams, Espinal, Dickerson

A few of the starters offer enough versatility to cycle guys around to keep them all fresh and get the matchups they want each day.

Dickerson is 3 weeks away from even being evaluated for a possible return, at which point he's likely still at least a week or more away just on account of getting rehab action and final checks and clearances. I'd operate under the assumption that he was acquired as a money take-back to decrease the price for the Jays and that his relevance to the on-field roster is marginal to non-existent.

If he does become something for the Jays it's likely as a bench bat vs RHP. Especially coming off a foot injury that's going to impede his running ability and that he's not been a terribly good OF for a couple years now. I wouldn't be penciling him in as a replacement 4th OF in order to push Grichuk or Gurriel out the door. Not unless some team comes calling and wants one of them as an important piece in a deal for a good young starter with control or something else the team simply can't afford to turn down

Not that anybody cares but it tips the scales in the Jays favour even in the minds of terrible baseball trade value evaluations

Yeah this is a bigger win. Its not a blockbuster but unless Miami knows something about McInvale that we dont, they have no incentive to make this trade a month ahead of the deadline unless they really needed that $1M.

Jays relievers fWAR:
Jordan Romano - 1.0 fWAR
Adam Cimber - 0.4 fWAR
Julian Merryweather - 0.4 fWAR - IL
David Phelps - 0.3 fWAR - Out for the Season
Ryan Borucki - 0.2 fWAR - IL

Tyler Chatwood - 0.1 fWAR

To add our 2nd best reliever to the team by a good margin, while getting a major league left handed bat, while getting rid of Panik, while giving up a non top 50 Jays prospects who is a 24 reliever turning 25 in 5 months in AA and only take on $1M, that is a steal.
