We're doing alright right now, we got some help on the out of town scoreboard, even though we helped the team we lost to by moving within two points of us, with no games in hand.

Pittsburgh and Islanders both lose in regulation.

Butcher will get exposed if he plays more. He's already starting to get exposed as the Devils are trying to spread the tough minutes away from only Greene.
Also other teams figure out where the weakness is. But Butcher was better tonight than in the last two periods last night.

I actually thought Zacha had his best game in weeks tonight. He was involved. You heard his name a lot. Yeah he shanked one, missed another, but his line - Zacha, Wood and Gibbons was the best we had.

I think we need to get the power play figured out. Special teams are huge. When we're scoring some power plays goals we're hot. when we're not we're not. Power plays are always streaky, but I think getting it back on track would be a big thing.

Also Hall, Hischier and Bratt need to be more responsible defensively.

I hate killing him again and he wasn't the reason for the loss, but if Hynes is serious about winning, he needs to take a page out of Torts and AV's book (he takes plenty of other pages out of AV's book) and play Cory both games in the back to back this week. If Bobrovsky can play two nights in a row and Lundqvist can play two nights in a row, so can Cory.

Kinkaid is a back-up goalie, nothing more. He manages to steal a few games every season and he's mediocre-to-good for the rest of the year.

I do have to say he has been on the receiving end of an absurd amount of wacky goals and he's also made quite a few ridiculous saves in each game he's been in.

Devils have played some absolute stinkers with Kinkaid in the line-up as well.

Kinkaid is below average even for a backup.

It happens. Team is young and still isn’t anywhere near complete. Coming down can suck but it’s to be expected with this team. And I’m sure they’ll be able to string some solid games together again. Rough weekend for sure but just gotta think big picture after games like these.

People need to get a grip. The last 5 periods don't define this team any more than 9-2 did.

Devils are damn lucky both the Isles and the Pens lost in Regulation so that still keeps them(at least for now) in a playoff spot still.

But man....Next week :

At home, The Kings next.....followed by a game up in Montreal(which is winnable)...then back home against Dallas.

Need to find a way to pick up at least 4 out of 6 points next week.

I don't like the timing of the trade, but I don't think this is a trade that pays off right now. It's going to be one that pays off later on. I'd like to think Shero has a good grasp on the market for defenseman given his trade history and realized this was probably the best option he would get for Henrique.

Vatanen had shoulder surgery in the off-season as well, so it remains to be seen how much that is impacting his play. Hell just look how bad Zajac looks after he had to recover from his injury.
His history with defensemen is abysmal. Here and in Pittsburgh.

The “Zajac is too slow and unskilled and doesn’t make us better” meme looks kinda true at the moment. Guy has been garbage for us. If he can’t find another gear and keeps getting big minutes, it’s gonna kill us.

We're just not gonna be a consistent playoff making team with Hynes, unless we amass a very stacked arsenal of very elite talent or he can find a way to change this ''Attack a little bit off the rush, then hold on for dear life and play defense all game''.

Vatanen has been incredibly mediocre for us so far and was mediocre for a year and a half in Anaheim. Henrique is a mediocre player too and we weren’t going to resign him, so it doesn’t matter too much, but I was expecting a bit more from Vatanen. I’ll give it time, but I’m not that impressed. His skating is pretty weak, just a bit better than Butcher. He can make a good first pass, but he doesn’t really move the needle for this team.

I think the issue is whether you want to peel off the tradeable pieces as they come up for renewal for futures and just build around Nico Bratt and anyone else under 25. With the guys that are signed the team can tread water until the kids mature and hopefully they can add a couple of other top talents in he next couple of drafts to take the big leap forward. Alternatively all NJ will get for trading flawed players are other flawed players.

Totally would have won with Cory in net tonight. /s How many goals were soft tonight?

Vatanen wasn't just a trade for this season -- it was a long term deal. I don't get the point of the debate it would be hard for them to re-sign Henrique and they really don't have many legitimate top 4 dman outside of Greene and Severson and Greene's def not playing like one this season. They have Hall and Johansson as top 6 LW and Zacha can play LW, Quenneville is a LW. And it's not like Zajac would have fetched Vatanen in a trade.

And yet I'm the one who gets destroyed for daring to question Hynes choice to play Kinkaid. :thumbd::thumbd::thumbd::thumbd:

Saying that Cory wouldn't have fared better is not giving Cory any sort of credit here. After playing poorly against Columbus, I think he would've played better than Kinky did, imo. I mean...He's supposed to be the Go-to Starting Goaltender. Instead he's given a day off as if the Rags were NOT a division opponent.

I think he's average at the very best.

One year he's good, the next year he's bad, the next year he's good again, this year he's been very bad, worse than 15-16 when he was bad.

Just fluctuates too much from year to year. He'll never be a starter (and I know it's only down to one guy who thinks he will be), because he's 28 and the backups that become starters, usually regress in play quite a bit when they move into a starting role somewhere. So if he's a .910 career backup, what's he gonna be as a starter? Like twilight era Marty? Maybe worse? He reeks of someone that would look like Ben Scrivens as a starter.
