I think Hayes tries hard, and I think there are good aspects to his game. He will never "use" his big size, the same way Joe Thornton doesn't. Hayes does at least try and hit now and then. I think the biggest problem is actually his poor hockey sense.

Perception is a big issue here. He could play a great game and people would still crap all over him. The reality is that outside of the Montreal game he hasn't been as terrible as people are making out. He has been reliable in his own end, and only a few times this season his lack of foot speed has shown to be problematic.

He's never going to be much more than what he is. He won't carry play, he will instead follow the play and make the right decision with the puck more often than not. He has the trust of the coach and as much as he is likely out skilled by younger guys, he is also much more reliable. I would love to see him waived, but reality is that he will be here through the end of the season. I honestly think he's the type of player you love to have in the playoffs. When the games get gritty, you need someone that can absorb a hit and still move the puck.

Hayes has really only two major issues that I can see.

You nailed one, severe lack of hockey sense.

Which means it's pretty hard to be effective without hockey sense when your as poor a skater as Jimmy Hayes happens to be.

He tries hard from what I can see. But the guy has no hockey sense whatsoever. He got lucky and potted 18 goals, which is what a good 3rd liner should get and we bought high on him to shed salary. The 3rd line RW spot needs an upgrade. With Spooner moving to 3rd line centre I would imagine Heinen will be on the 2nd line at LW. Spooner needs someone on his RW on that 3rd line.

Agreed. I honestly think those are his only two shortcomings. Sadly, I don't think either is really coachable or able to be drastically improved upon.

at this stage of his career I`ve come to only one conclusion, he`s not very good at hockey

Unfortunately, I am in full agreement. From what I've heard, he is a really good kid too. Tough to have your career bottom out in your hometown but it is what it is.

I envision him being a guy who`ll go to Europe at some stage, sooner than later I predict

As you stated, seems to be a guy well liked and that`s nice but..

Folks said Reilly Smith was a useless hockey player. He gets shipped off to Florida performed well and earned himself a nice contract. Maybe Jimmy needs a change of scenery.

Reilly Smith is a much better hockey player than Jimmy Hayes, but if I had to take Jimmy on this contract or Smith on his, I would take Jimmy 7 days a week. Even if I just stashed him in the minors for a year or two.

Smith is good for 25/50 most years, but is horribly inconsistent game to game. He currently has 0-0-1 in 5 games for Florida. Brings no character or leadership either. 5 years at 5 million per would make me want to cry as a fan.

Exactly, why people lament the loss of that player I don't understand

Wish the Bs would have gotten more for him but I by no means miss his play. Or lack of.

22 games consecutive games without a point for ol' Scoreless Jimmy.

When will they end this failed experiment?

If Koko was a good guy would he have gotten more ice time?:shakehead

OK enough of Hayes...he's isn't NHL caliber.

Neither is Koko, hope he is enjoying Russia.

Hayes needs to be waived, it saves half his salary sending him to Providence and maybe somebody picks him up. 0 for 22 and counting.

Anybody think Tyler Randell would go 22 games without a point? With 3rd line minutes and power play time no less.

It's almost like he's given up trying to score. He tries to make a hit on each shift just to show that he doing 'something', but he's no good at it. Just try to make some plays Jimmy.

I'd be up for a Hayes - Randell swap.
