Thatcher Demko.
He really is the only well developed prospect the Canucks have taken from draft day to the NHL and gotten full potential in the last 20 or so years, hey? Maybe Horvat? But he didn't spend much time at all in the AHL.

And honestly I suspect it's all on Thatcher, he's just that good, and seems very mentally sound. Super solid human and insanely good hockey player, that guy.

Ya it's been a while since we developed a Kevin Bieksa or even a Connauton.

But even in the case of Connaughton - he never played a game for the Canucks.

The era of Edler, Bieksa, Kesler, Tanev, Hansen, Raymond are all examples of guys that went through the AHL (some not for super long) and made significant contributions to the Canucks.

I'm honestly really hard pressed to find any guys since then (aside from the aforementioned Demko and Horvat)

I'd separate goalie development from the discussion (I'm just expressing my opinion) as if there is any one (good) consistancy since Nonis was GM, it's goalie development.

Not even 1 "skater" on our roster has been developed by our affiliate. They have all been acquired from other teams, or have skipped the AHL. Young players haven't been developing well enough, and we have not had any older prospects surprising.

I can only hope Rutherford sees what I'm seeing, because this team is going nowhere unless significant changes are made to our player development. It is putrid.

Apparently he's week-to-week with an undisclosed injury (Chris Faber mentioned this a few days ago), but is supposedly skating so that's something. It's really to bad injuries/covid have hampered him of late (Woo's played just 6/21 possible games since Dec 1st)...cuz he was starting to turn his season around after a slow start. Woo was pointless with a -4 rating over his 1st 9GP, but had managed 2G 5A 7PTS (only 1PPA) and a +8 rating over his last 11GP. Hopefully he can pickup where he left-off...whenever he returns (sooner rather than later would be nice).

Good breakdown.

This is his 2nd AHL season (really 1.5), how are we considering him a bust again?

Like obviously he's not a Quinn Hughes type but he could still develop into a bottom pair defender at worst.

It's been stated before, but bears repeating. The Canucks during the Benning era never drafted and developed a single d-man from the Dub--not one--despite wasting a lot of picks in the middle to late rounds.

So Woo is already carrying the Canucks "Dub curse' around as baggage. Definitely a disappointing second season in the AHL, and certainly not trending in a direction that would give you much confidence that he'll even be able to play a depth role in the NHL.

But d-men do sometimes take longer to develop, so you never know.

We did got Hughy from the 2018 draft but look at the 2016 one. The 2016 draft has been a bust of biblical proportions for us.We finished bottom 3 and we don't have one player.

Look at this list. This should bury the Jimbo master drafter narrative for all time. That 2016 year(bonus Louie 6x6) is the worst in canucks history.

Within the past 20 years (but not by all that much) were Canuck draft picks Ryan Kesler, Kevin Bieksa, Michael Grabner, Alex Edler, Jannik Hansen, Mike Brown and Cory Schneider, of whom only Edler is still playing in the NHL, with Schneider in the AHL.

Yes it is bad but please look at Canuck drafts 2007 to 2012 if you want to see multiple similar drafts in a row. Basically no players in 6 year period who did not go through waivers. Not one consistent top 9 forward top 6 dman or backup goalie. We are still suffering for those years.

Did we finished bottom 3 in that period? We had an elite team from 2010-2012 and unless we could draft an impact player in the 20's, those draft picks would have to spend a few good years in the minors. Hodgson was drafted with the 9 pick and made the team full time in 2011-2012 but was traded because he wanted top 6 ice time and he was not going to move Hank and Kes. Untill 2014 we did not have a top 10 draft pick outside of the Horvat trade to draft an impact player. Do you think Brock would have cracked the top6 of the canucks back then? He would not have developed on the 3rd or 4th line. He got instant minutes with the Sedins because the team was garbage. What player outside of the Top 10 picks(Hughes and Petey) would have made the canucks back then?

Where you draft matters and that's why 2016 is such a bad year. Sure the 2007-2012 draft sucked but look at the drafting positions. Finishing bottom 3 and getting nothing out of a draft is not acceptable.

Worst part was everyone knew that Juolevi was as the wrong pick in the moment and how much better we would be

At least we didn't waste our 2nd rounder that year by picking a bust.

Unfortunately looks like yet another draft success from the draft guru.
I think Romanov was the guy selected right after Woo too. Another swing and a miss by Benning. Too bad he traded away so many swings. Maybe with more swings the misses, like Woo, don’t stand out so much?
