He may have play a game there but he was a left D most of the tourney
That is incorrect, i watched a lot of that tourney. The Finns had only 2 rhd, and one of them was a giant slug who was basically their #7, Saarajarvi was the only rhd who played meaningful minutes against good opponents. Of course Juolevi played a lot on the right side, he was their most versatile and smartest defender. It also doesn't mean that much really.
Edit: changed my first sentence, the mods here have enough work to do probably.

Benning has screwed up the right side of this defense so much that Jet Woo has to succeed.
he's it

I think they got a right side prospect in the 5th this year with that Mirenberg guy

He made his bed. Unfortunately it’s going to cost the next guy a they are 15 year blunders.

He could have had Macavoy and tony deangelo as right side defenders (regardless of issues he’s a great player) instead of Virtanen and Juolevi , not to mention the 9th overall we traded this year.

I watched this before the draft, and again when we drafted him
Juolevi is #4:
Olli Juolevi - Shift by Shift - YouTube
Wow he looks terrific in that game. The shift leading up to Finland's 2nd goal. And before everybody says it's 19 year old kids at a U20 tournament. He's playing against Canadians: Barzal, Point, Marner, Chabot, Konecny, Beauvillier, Sanheim and Perlini.

Juolevi was 17 years old in a U20 tournament. His production in the AHL is good, and apparently he can play the right side pretty well.

You’re right I was thinking about the WJC he was in with Heiskanen

The amusing and thing about this is that Woo is probably a more important prospect than Juolevi at this point but his thread his completed hijacked.
Yeah I had to double check a few times which thread this was. I suppose its not entirely wrong to discuss Juolevi here as long as it's in relation to Woo.

I completely agree with your assessment. And to top it off Woo is a right shot. 6' tall and hits like a truck, defensively responsible and smart, whats not to like. I like his defensive play last year although it was in a weakened AHL. I can't wait to see if he gets called up this year. The thought of seeing him play for Abbotsford is super exciting, and I'm probably more amped up for that than the Canucks games.

I am hoping that if Woo becomes a full time NHL player, it would create even more interest in hockey among the asian community. There are a lot of die hard Asian Canucks fans, but for whatever reason, not many Asian hockey players from Vancouver nowadays. Seems like the young up and coming prospects with Asian heritage are from other parts of North America (Suzuki bros and Pu from Ontario, Woo from Manitoba, Yamamoto from Seattle, etc.)

Paul Kariya is one exception. At least the Canucks never had a chance to draft him.

True. Let's get back to Woo, who doesn't suck anywhere near as much as certain other people.

18,000 posts and 10,000 of them are about your favorite movies. Not sure you’re rating on players holds much weight. If we debate Edward Norton however, you’ll be the first person we call.

I think if Steve played in the current era he might have a 20 goal season and bounce around the league a bit.

I really thought Steve was going to be a player for us. He was a star in college and put up very big numbers in his rookie year in the AHL. He was a victim of the dead puck era with his size.

i was at an (exhibition?) game where he played. he made things happen but was just so small. the crowd was really rooting for him. there was a play where he jumped about a foot in the air to hit a guy shoulder to shoulder and just bounced off and jumped right back again. i don't think even today he could overcome that size deficit.

He was Theoren Fleury height but he was pretty thick. But ya I don't think he would have been able to overcome his lack of size but he probably would have had a longer look. IIRC he wasn't that elusive for a smaller player but he was pretty fast and skated hard. Definitely an exciting player and a fan favourite.

I was at that game too. He had some skill, but he was such a shrimp he couldn't really compete. Even regular sized guys could just squash him.
