have to disagree - thought he was pretty brutal in our end and away from the puck not to mention a neutral zone disaster

his best defensive work was shutting down Kane and Seto :)

You can see the fire in the body language of the young guys doing their best to make the team. Joki just doesn't have that fire to make the extra little plays, skate all out or sacrifice for the team.

my only issue with this is that there are clearly better options - he would be 3rd unit PK at any rate

3rd unit PK? I don't think so. I hope we're trying to move most of our top 6 away from killing penalties if possible. Slater, Little, Wright, Frolik and Ladd will do most of the PK work IMO. Only want Wheeler and Kane doing it if those guys are dying for 2 PK's in a row or something.

Cormier and Klingberg both played just as good as Wright if not better IMO. He works hard, and is not bad on the PK. But Cormier, Klingberg both bring small things as well. Wonder who will take PK time this year.

Frolik, Slater, Little, Ladd, Wright, Kane, Halischuk all can PK fairly well. I am fine with Ladd and Little taking 3rd unit PK, to rest them more for 5v5 and PP. Although Little is solid on the PK.

Hearing Noel gush over Jokinen turns my stomach. That was the only line that didn't score tonight. KSS looked much better against a superior opponent.
I will be happy to see Noel & Olli go if it means Burmi comes back. The Jets could of had a great third line if it weren't for those two: Raymond-Burmistrov-Frolik

What does Cormier bring? Can't keep up with the play, can't get the puck, can't do anything with the puck. The only skill he has that's NHL quality is faceoffs.

Not impressed with Olli between Kane and Seto. That line wasn't very effective, IMO. Not sure what Noel is looking at, but if he keeps those 3 together, we'll be in for some long nights this winter.

Postma just can not play defensive hockey, suitable at an NHL level. An offensive dman, maybe, but he still struggles in his zone. Gives up puck, can't box guys out, can't tie up guys in front of the net. Jets have too many guys on d, that do not play well defensively. That is why, in a couple of years, Trouba will likely be the Jets #1 defender, IMO. He would be a guy that will be on the first pk unit and first pp unit. Play 23+ mins, and play well in our zone.

This team is in desperate need of a solid defensive-minded dman. Preferably, left handed.

Really liked Frolic tonight, Tangradi, & Slater as well. Trouba looked way better versus his first game. Even Melchiori wasn't bad; I know he isn't making the team and his skating clearly needs further work, but he thinks the game well and wasn't much of a liability out there in general. He'll probably have a good year in St John's.

PS: Big Ant Peluso with the winner. He's a beauty.

Lawless is more like Good Ol' JR than a real sports journalist. A lot of his takes are dubious and contrarian. Or he'll see a guy do something well once and run with that player being effective.

He went with an angle about how Olli was going to bring accountability to the defense last year. He was kinda right. Everybody else has to be accountable to make up for Olli's messes.

Just got back from the game.

There is a lot of Olli hate going on in this thread which seams to have carried over form last season. In reality he had a good game, better than Scheifele even (who also had a good game). I understand lots of people want to see Scheifele on that line, but it's preseason and we need to try different line combos.

Postma had a great bounce back game despite some of the giveaways. Its something that we should come to expect like we do with Buff.

This was the first time I saw Trouba play live. He had a great game and looked calm and composed. His play probably rubbed off on Melchiori as they worked extremely well together as Melchiori was just has composed.

The only player who had a bad game was Stuart. Bad giveaways and no chemistry with Postma. It was his first game, but he will need to step it up as the young guys are gunning for the last few spots.

Pavelec had a good game as well. No way you can blame him for those last two goals.

Setoguchi showed off some great passing skills. I think he will be a good fit on the second line.

Frolik with a monster of a game and shows that he can step up and play on the PP as well. Liking this guy a lot.

Overall a great effort, especially overcoming the tenacity of the Oilers in the first and third periods.

I'm going to go against the grain a bit and say that Jokinen was not bad. Not good, but not bad. Scheifele was better between Kane and Seto but I think Jokinen is still going to contribute this year in a positive way

Don't disagree Olli could play a role, but IMO he should be kept away from Kane. He always seems to bring Kane to a stand still. Kane is at his best when he is flying up the ice.

I am not sure why they don't have Scheifele out there with Kane and Setoguchi. Scheifele can keep up with them, he has the offensive awareness that would mesh with Kane and Setoguchi and when I see Jokinen out there, he just seems like he is out of his element. Everyone seems to notice it but Noel.

I completely agree actually.

Agreed as well. Kane is TOO talented to not have someone who can find him easy on the ice. The kid has 40+ goal potential and with a decent center should have no problem doing it.

That is how Melch plays - calm steady and positional. That doesn't come from playing with Trouba.

He's too much set in old ways. Much like how Hitch used to be where a Vet was given multiple mulligans but a young player had to claw his way up the ranks even if the younger player was better than the vet.

The problem is for this team to take it to the next level it will need to develop and lean on its prospects. This may ultimately be Noel's undoing, especially since since Chevy's biggest strength to date seems to be at the draft table.

I have no problem giving a vet the benefit of the doubt, but it seems obvious that Jokinen and Scheifele are going in opposite directions. I see nothing wrong with the 3rd line being a shutdown line with offensive sparks compared to the 4th line, however, for the long-term plans Scheifele needs to be with Kane.

Ant is a beaut. Pretty sure he rolled up next to my cab with trouba. Gave a honk and a wink to the hot blonde in the far lane and peeled off in his audi down portage. Welcome to the nhl trouba lol, he looked shocked.

Just back from the game.

Olli looked faster than last year but other than that it's same old same old. He's a really nice guy in real life, and he plays like a nice guy on the ice. There are a few times he could have hammered the Oilers D in the corners yet he slows up and tries to stick check a guy, which he's almost always unsuccessful at. Noel has to pump Olli's tires because he knows he's stuck with him. If he's smart Noel puts him on the 3rd line and asks him to focus on defence.

Kane looks great as usual. The guy creates something offensively with his speed and size almost every time he's on the ice.

Scheifele looked lathargic in the 1st but really improved in the 2nd. He definitely looked like Bambi falling over a few times tho.

Buff was dominant. Looked like he wasn't even trying. His booming shot from the point is in midseason form as well.

Loved Frolik as well. The guy is so reliable. Not a physical guy but not scared of physical play like Olli.

Trouba looked way better. Super composed. Made beautiful breakout passes all game long. Would like to see him take a few more shots but he didn't seem comfortable getting too offensive other than one beautiful rush he made.

To say Pavelec was a star is a bit overkill. He was fine but honestly wasn't tested in the first 2 periods other than a couple nice glove saves.
