This year's Laine is going to be an absolute star in this league. Not only is he an elite goal scorer, he is becoming a tremendous play maker and he has upped his defensive game 10 fold. For the life of me I can't believe some still argue he should be kept as a 1 dimensional shooter.

He's rounding into form, with the added dimensions as a passer and physical presence.

I was happy with this Team effort. Scheifele had some edge. Connor was buzzing. I was particularly impressed with Wheeler tonight, he was battling. I like the change he has made, from being a passive player, to a guy who gets to the net, works in the areas his linemates need him to get to. That's what a veteran does. Nice to see Ehlers score, he looked gunshy early. Copp and Lowry are leading this year.

The defense to me is impressive as well. It's simple now, you don't have the Big guy roaming down the boards. Very few players take chances, and they limit odd man rushes, force the play to come to them.

I thought Poolman had a pretty good game, he got beat on the 3rd goal where he probably should have changed, but he was solid in the one on one battles.

No complaints about Kulikov-Pionk, smart game.

And Beaulieu-Sbisa were good. Sbisa very good positionally. Beaulieu gets the puck to the net, which I like, was fighting the choppy ice a bit, but looked comfortable.

Chemistry is a game to game improvement, and the defense looked tighter tonight, well coached, against a Florida team that has a pretty strong top 4 conversely.

4th line penalty gave up the first goal against, but they were ok. Still not worthy of significant minutes.

We just beat a talented team on the road, and Maurice you could say outcoached his rival Joel Quenneville again.

Well the team was full marks for the win tonight. For the most part they defended well and they did a much better job generating chances in close to the net tonight. Refs were horrendous and one sided but it didn't cost us tonight.

Brossoit. Much better performance by him.

Morrissey had a strong night all around. He seems to be back playing a strong all around game. Poolman was poor though. He panics when he has limited time. Turned the puck over behind the net for a scoring chance. Miss fires on break out passes when he has time. I also don't know what the heck he was thinking or doing on their second goal. Also lost his man on their third. We need an upgrade at that position if the team intends to improve and compete long term this year.

Pionk and Kuli both had solid/low event games.

Psia was his usual awful self. Nathan was pretty solid and can more then adequately will that bottom pairing slot.

Laine/Scheifele/Connor: Good night for this trio outside the one shift. Sccheifele was much more engaged in our end and was great offensively. Laine continues his real strong two/way play. Needs to shoot more but he is still contributing. Connor was strong outside his wall play in the dzone.

Wheeler/Ehlers/Roslovic They had there moments. I wouldn't mind seeing Ehlers and Connor switch as I think the second line needs a shoot first player on it. They are a bit too pass happy.

Third line with another strong third line game.

Fourth line barely played.

Agreed, the Jets have developed Laine into a far more valuable balanced player which means he’s far more valuable player overall now then his first three years.

At 21 what he is doing this season is foreshadowing a truly elite player. He will cost a bundle after next season but the player he is becoming will be worth every penny IMO.

Post-game audio:

Players: Patrik Laine, Josh Morrissey and Mark Scheifele.

Coach Maurice scrum topics: His thoughts on the Scheifele line tonight? How big was Morrissey's goal? Play of Laurent Brossoit. Did he like the offence they were able to generate? What's his biggest takeaway from the first quarter of the season?

Agreed. Laine in years 1-3, if that was his peak hypothetically is tradable. Laine in year four is exactly what most of us wanted/hoped Laine would turn into and thankfully he’s developed & matured and is turning into a superstar instead of a one Dimensional PP specialist.

Quick thoughts...

Outplayed the Panthers and deserved the win.

81-55-29 Another great game from Laine in all 3 zones. His vision is terrific. Now that he's skating better and making quicker decisions he's tough to play against. Nice chemistry with Scheifele. Regulars will know that I often criticize Connor for poor zone exits and D zone play. Watch the 2nd FLA goal for a textbook example. He was very good in the offensive zone - elusive and strong along the boards.

9-27-85 Dominant game and deserved the goal, and more. Lowry is in beast mode, and Copp is a rock. Perreault gives them the quickness they need to disrupt and in transition. Love this line.

27-26-28 Good game overall. Ehlers started slow but was flying by the second period. Roslovic was fast and dangerous. Wheeler's Best game at C this year. He got into dangerous areas more, almost like there might have been coaching involved.

56-19-68 Overmatched again. Gustafsson doesn't play fast enough to drive a line, and neither winger does much. Try Spacek.

44-3 Wonderful game from this pairing. Poolman has limitations but he's doing some good things with the puck and he plays with effort and intensity every shift. Morrissey rounding into form.

7-4 Kulikov up and down again. Liked Pionk again. He's a fine 2nd pairing RD.

88-5 A surprisingly decent game in an up tempo match.

Brossoit looked rusty, but made enough saves. He looked better as the game progressed.

I agree that Morrissey-Poolman had a good game, but it strange that Morrissey was on the ice for all the goals against. The first he was outmuscled by Barkov, the second wasn't really anyone's fault, the bumper pass got picked off, and then it was chaos. Third Poolman lost his man. The Jets seems to be patient with Poolman and in the end the GWG came off his stick. One thing I noticed is that Morrissey is playing less physical this year, and I think that might be precipitated by the need to stay healthy.

I agree with the left winger swap. Obviously there were great results today, but Ehlers and Roslovic are skating around and swooping and a shooter there would help Wheeler. If the blender returns, I think that's the first thing to try.

That play was no doubt a bad turnover - but that little pass to open space rather than up the boards, is one that the team has been using successfully all season - this time it didn't work and that happens.
I wouldn't point at it and call out his season on that play though - it's a risky pass apposed to throwing it up the wall and when it works, it beautiful - when it doesn't, it looks horrible. Sh%t happens - and he made up for at least part of that error by playing a role in the go ahead a few minutes later.

But you are right - it was a bad pass

Good gritty team effort by the Jets. For a team that lost 4 key defenseman, that was a real impressive win. I really liked the play of Scheif, Laine and Morrissey, and Brossoit was solid as well. If we get Buff back and pick up one upper level D man like a Troubadour, we will be a very contending team. Big test coming up- Tampa- we’ll see what we’re made of- great game boys !!

He wasn't on for the third goal against that was Pionk with Poolman. First goal it was hard to fault him as he had inside position but the puck bounced to the outside right onto Barkovs stick. Outside of knocking him over not much he could have done imo.

I would wager JoMo isn't 100% healed from that upper body injury which might be why he isn't playing as physically.

I wouldn't mention it except that Connor very often fails to get a good zone exit. It's an area that he needs to improve, especially playing with Scheifele who tends to play a bit loose in the D zone.
