Welp, wading in on the great Pavelec vs. Montoya debate.
I don't believe that either is a bonafide starter. Pavelec couldn't land as the starter on any other team (well, maybe Florida, but that's a debate for another day), and Montoya just hasn't ever shown that he deserved to be a first round pick either. So, that's a wash to me.
What does sway my opinion in favour of the big Cubano, though, is the marked difference in how the Jets, as a team and the defence, played in front of him last night. I thought I had seen flashes of that in the New Jersey game, but last night it was noticeable. He talked to the players, he was willing to handle the puck and direct some traffic, and the Jets responded. The Jets were using passes through the defensive zone, initiating rushes in a way that doesn't happen with nearly as much frequency when Pavelec is in goal. The Jets just seem more, confident?, with Montoya.
Based on this, I would start Montoya until he craps the bed, to be honest. Accomplishes two things - keeps building the confidence of the defenders, and gives Pavelec a kick in the pants. If he's got to work to be a starter, maybe he actually works at it to improve his deficiencies.
Other than that, I'm really happy with the win. Sure, there are nits to pick, like with every game, and the claim can be made that the Wings didn't bring their A game, but kudos to the Jets for taking the opportunities afforded and getting the well deserved win.
Enstrom had a fantastic game - he stood Tootoo up along the boards more than once, he was gold with the puck in the D zone, and was the most effective point man on the PP, I thought.
Buff? Ouch. His worst game this season.
Ellerby was better than I had anticipated, and Pardy played well enough to take Stuart's job away, IMO.
The FroSH line was awesome, and I thought the Joker had one of his better games, along with Tangradi and Wheels.
Ladd and Little? I'd go to war with those two. Little has been simply the Jets best player this year, and tonight Ladd showed why he is a captain, and why 30 goals is possible. Give me those garbage goals every game. He's so willing to do the dirty work, which is how the garbage goals go in.
Keep playing like that, and the wins will start showing up.
As a last note, Noel outcoached Babcock, as far as I'm concerned. The Wings made some adjustments to start the 2nd, and Noel countered, because the Jets started taking the game back to the Wings before the period was finished, and the Wings had no answers by the 3rd.
Trade Buff, fire Noel, demote Scheifele and release Pavs.
