Specific to the Jets only Nathan Smith applies. The Jets have been able to get Trouba, Connor, Roslovic Lucius out after 1 year of college, which gave the Jets one year of ELC exempt development for the latter 2. Hellebuyck and Appleton signed after 2 years of college; Copp, Poolman, Kovacevic and Samberg after 3. Suess joined the organization after completing college. Jared Moe and Harrison Blaisdell are undetermined, not sure if they are still prospects the Jets would consider signing, or fallen the wayside like Jack Glover. I'd be surprised if Mc Groarty goes beyond 2 years, and maybe even joins the organization next year. Of all those NCAA picks only Trouba and Roslovic ask to be traded after their ELCs expired.
History of Russians draft picks with the Jets organization: Ivan Telgin bolts in his first pro year, never comes back. Burmistrov bolts after being demoted during the lockout, and to our chagrin, comes back, only to be waived.
Kraskovsky never signs.
Berdin spends 3 years in the minors without any significant improvement, leaves under substance abuse policy, which agent states is to be closer to his family, and probably knowing he is not going to make the NHL with this organization, after they sign Rittich.
Now I think Kuzmin, the Belarussian, and Zhilkin, the Russian with Canadian citizenshp both drafted out of the OHL (like Burmistrov and Telegin before them by the Thrashers) should turn out fine, especially with that North American ice experience.
Chibrikov is playing for the same organization in Russia as Fedotov, who has disappeared from hockey this year, for trying to leave. Rashevsky I don't know where he stands, but there is every reason to draft U.S college players over Russians, if the talent of BPA between them is insignificant, for the simple reason that the NCAA prepares players for the transition to NHL hockey much better than the KHL, or Russian junior leagues, beyond the political uncertainty now.
Obviously when Chevy made his picks in 2021, there was less uncertainty about Russians leaving, and I think he was looking at long term organizational needs, but I think the USHL/NCAA is the bread and butter for the Jets scouts, followed by the OHL.
