Russia plays fast and loose with it's conscription rules. Piss off the wrong oligarch and a player could easily find themselves fighting in Ukraine with a rusty WW2 era rifle.
At least money talks and if you pay the right person you can make things happen

Not just money, there is video of people being conscripted for asking too many questions about conscription. Basically they are conscripting ethnic minorities far from the capital and whoever pisses off he government, it's not even close to random.

Sounds like Lucius is out for several weeks, likely to miss the world juniors unless they keep a spot open. That's assuming he wants to go.

Might be thin on Jets prospects at the WJs at this rate with both Lucius and Salomonsson getting injured.
Yeah, who will we have there? McGroarty for sure. No Russia so no Chibrikov. Maybe Lambert gets loaned to Finland? I would assume that is it, then.

Very outside chance that Fabian Wagner could go as well but he's more likely an option for next year.

On one hand I get it. But on the other hand you have to draft the best player available. If they never come over, that's their prerogative. They're still very skilled players that fell in the draft. The exact type of player you take a flyer on.
Exactly. As a 5th round pick no issue buying a lottery ticket with a Rashevsky type guy.

Heaven forbid we miss on a Blaisdell, Neaton, Vallati.

If you drafted a Rashevsky every year and got one of those guys to sign you'd be better off than going chalk every mid-round pick for 10 years.

Yeah, a pick like Neaton was a wasted pick on day one. Average to below-average numbers in junior A as a 19-year-old.

I’d much rather the gamble on a guy like Rashevsky than that.

Damaged player. Very much a likely bust. Sigh.

A Saturday afternoon game being heavily scouted. Makes sense considering both pro teams are playing in town over the weekend. With the consternation from Heinola's camp, you can't help but think they may be related.

Interesting to have that many scouts at the game. You might be right about Heinola. I wonder how many scouts will be at the Jets game tomorrow.

I am always fearful of the potential of players with less than NHL calibre skating. His injuries (not sure what the latest one is but apparently it will keep him out of the WJHC?) make the skating even more of a concern. That is what I meant by damaged.

Yes he is a talented scorer. Can his skating get him to scoring position at the big league level? That is a huge question mark.

After his very good preseason showing, who would’ve thought Brad Lambert would only have three points in 11 games with the Moose. That’s a bit disappointing.
The good news on the prospect front is that Rutger McGroarty seems to be heating up a little bit.

I'm not all that surprised as there is a world of difference between preseason and a pro league. There us a big adjustment period. To be fair to him he has been a bit unlucky in terms of points as he's creating a lot in terms of chances. Imo he's been more noticeable and better at driving play and chances than Lucious.

Agree about Lucius.
McGroarty with 2 goals tonight. 3 goals and 1 assist in two games this weekend and he’s up to a point per game for the season.

Plenty more examples of NCAA players not signing with their teams than there are of Russian players not being allowed to/not wanting to come over.
Specific to the Jets only Nathan Smith applies. The Jets have been able to get Trouba, Connor, Roslovic Lucius out after 1 year of college, which gave the Jets one year of ELC exempt development for the latter 2. Hellebuyck and Appleton signed after 2 years of college; Copp, Poolman, Kovacevic and Samberg after 3. Suess joined the organization after completing college. Jared Moe and Harrison Blaisdell are undetermined, not sure if they are still prospects the Jets would consider signing, or fallen the wayside like Jack Glover. I'd be surprised if Mc Groarty goes beyond 2 years, and maybe even joins the organization next year. Of all those NCAA picks only Trouba and Roslovic ask to be traded after their ELCs expired.

History of Russians draft picks with the Jets organization: Ivan Telgin bolts in his first pro year, never comes back. Burmistrov bolts after being demoted during the lockout, and to our chagrin, comes back, only to be waived.
Kraskovsky never signs.
Berdin spends 3 years in the minors without any significant improvement, leaves under substance abuse policy, which agent states is to be closer to his family, and probably knowing he is not going to make the NHL with this organization, after they sign Rittich.

Now I think Kuzmin, the Belarussian, and Zhilkin, the Russian with Canadian citizenshp both drafted out of the OHL (like Burmistrov and Telegin before them by the Thrashers) should turn out fine, especially with that North American ice experience.

Chibrikov is playing for the same organization in Russia as Fedotov, who has disappeared from hockey this year, for trying to leave. Rashevsky I don't know where he stands, but there is every reason to draft U.S college players over Russians, if the talent of BPA between them is insignificant, for the simple reason that the NCAA prepares players for the transition to NHL hockey much better than the KHL, or Russian junior leagues, beyond the political uncertainty now.

Obviously when Chevy made his picks in 2021, there was less uncertainty about Russians leaving, and I think he was looking at long term organizational needs, but I think the USHL/NCAA is the bread and butter for the Jets scouts, followed by the OHL.

Did I miss something? Where is this "McGroarty intends to test Free Agency after finish his college stint" talk coming from? Has he or someone associated with him indicated that as a possibility? I hope the Jets try to turn him pro this spring and offer to burn a year off his ELC if need be to make that happen.

I think it was just a facetious or sarcastic remark comparing Russian prospects staying in Russia with NCAA players playing through their collegiate sport eligibility to go straight to UFA. There's been zero indication that any current Jets prospects don't intend to sign, at least that I'm aware of.

Jacob Trouba signed, got himself close to UFA to leave immediately.

Jack Roslovic signed, requested a trade to get out of Winnipeg.

If you're going to use Berdin as an example of Russian's "not signing with us" despite signing with us and playing for years with the Moose, add those two against the US

Chibrikov and Rashevsky have contracts. The NHL doesn't have a transfer agreement with the KHL so the players either need to find a way to terminate/buy out their contract with their KHL team or wait for it to expire before they can come over. They were also both drafted before Russia invaded Ukraine. If they never want to come over, then that's that. Just like if an NCAA player doesn't want to play in Winnipeg.

The bonus is the Jets own their rights much longer than NCAA players.

I bet Minnesota fans wish they had taken a good old Minnesota boy instead of Kaprizov

There are many things wrong here. Telegin didn't bolt, he had severe concussion and as a result mental health issues. Burmi came and played. If you're going to include Kraskovsky then you have to include all the NCAA players who weren't signed at all because they weren't good enough (where Croix Evingson?), also Jets still have rights to Kraskovsky. Berdin came over and wasn't good enough. Also it's not the substance abuse policy, it's the player assistance program that everybody assumes is only used because of substances despite the many times it wasn't, including this very time with Berdin where they reported it had nothing to do with drugs or alcohol.

I'm not so interested in looking at a history of Russians coming to the NHL.... it's clear to me that those who are good enough will give the NHL a try. It's where they want to be.

I'm much more interested in knowing if any or how many players who played in Russia last year made it to the NHL this year. Has the war cutoff the pathway to North America, or are these players free to leave when their contract is up? Does it depend on who owns their club, and how that owner feels about Putin's ambitions?

Edit: I follow two NHL teams and I know that neither had any Russians come over this year. Wondering if there are some examples with other teams.
