Stars have shown that you can build a strong team with lower 1st and 2nd round picks.

Come to think of it, so have the Jets (recently).

Chibrikov was drafted a few picks after Stankoven in the same draft. Lambert was drafted a year after Stankoven.

The Jets have built a very good top-7 of prospects with good recent drafting...

McGroarty
Lambert
Barlow
Heinola
Salomonsson
Chibrikov
Lucius
We have? None of them have proven a thing in the NHL.

Dallas Stars:

Jason Robertson - 2nd round pick - 1st line NHL winger, maybe elite 1st liner
Jake Oettinger - late 1st round pick - #1 goalie
Roope Hintz - 2nd round pick - #1 centre
Thomas Harley - mid or late first round pick - top-4 d-man
Wyatt Johnson - late first round pick - top-6 forward

Adam Lowry - 3rd round

Connor Hellebuyck - 5th round pick after not being selected in his first eligible draft year

Andrew Copp - 4th round after originally going undrafted

Samberg - 2nd round

Kovacevic - 3rd round after going undrafted

Appleton 6th round after going undrafted

Gustafsson and Chisholm 2nd and 5th round respectively. Both are still on the edge of being players, can go either way at this point but still closer than most.

Not saying we're ahead of Dallas, but we definitely have some later round wins.

For Dallas, Jamie Benn in the 5th round.

You're all saying different things. First post was about Stars prospects, the reply was about Jets prospects, then next reply was about the Stars' young NHL core, then finally a post about the Jets' later round picks who have developed into NHL players. Comparing apples to oranges to pears to bananas.

The truth is both teams have a good mix of veterans and youth and have had varying success over the last 5 years or so. The Stars have been a cut above the Jets in most ways for awhile. But not by too much. They've had their early round exits, slumps, and disappointments as well.

Harley turned into a top 4 dman this year. Same with Cam York. Both spent most of the year in the AHL last year. Both from the same draft as Heinola. Could have been a different story with the injury and Schmidt getting sat a few times at the beginning of the year. Jets have been healthy on D so hard to complain.

But the Stars and Flyers also gave their drafted prospects the opportunity after going back to the AHL and busting their ass when the opportunity arose.

Can't have young drafted players break into the league if there's never a spot they can start working from.

Rutger and Brad should make it interesting to see what they do at F next year with guys like Appleton and Iafallo. Would like to see a Samberg-Heinola pairing going forward, but again we have to see what the offseason brings.

I'm hoping Sammy is played at the 2LHD spot next season. I don't think Heinola is going to play 2RHD.

I'm projecting of course, which is a normal thing in a "prospects" thread?

The Jets' prospects haven't proven anything at the NHL level, but neither has Stankoven, who was the prospect highlighted in the original post. Still, I think the Jets have put together a strong pool of 6-7 prospects that can fit an NHL roster nicely. The Jets already have a talented roster, so they don't need prospects to take over, just to fill important roster spots. If a couple of them really pop, as they might, so much the better.

This can hardly be considered impressive after 13 NHL drafts.

Kovacevic, Gustafsson, and Chisholm are hardly game changing players.

If only Skellefteå had known that Olkinuora's weakness is soft shots from distance.

If Barlow, McG, Lambert and Salomonsson hit, that's you future core 4. Will all of them be able to make the jump and be successful ?
Will be interesting how the progression goes. It’s easier to start a new core on a bad team or a team committed to development like Dallas.
