Something I've noticed watching Barlow in the OHL, he's not driving his line at all and he's used as the 3rd best forward. 3v3 and 4v4 his regular linemates are the first ones on, he's on the second unit. Regular strength it's his linemates controlling the play until they can find him. I'd like to see him be the driver on his team in the OHL before concluding that he's too good for it.

Can't disagree. I would like to see more assists. But we could certainly use more finish on the Jets.

How is his defensive play? I don't expect an awful lot but I hope he is not entirely 1 dimensional.

Yeah again nothing wrong with what he does, it's very effective, but if you can give him a year where the team runs through him and he crushes it he can begin to scale it upwards to higher levels. If you throw him in now he's going from being a complementary player in the OHL straight to being a complementary player in the best league in the world. He'll be too busy trying to stick with what has worked for him to develop other areas of his game. As I see it anyways.

I like the bolded comment. Almost certainly correct. It could still happen with a slower path to the NHL but more development gives a better chance of avoiding that. I hope he is smart enough to work on his weak areas instead of just counting on his strengths.

Jets definitely need to make Barlow available to Team Canada, but keep McGroarty in Jetsland.
McGroarty's aged out

Curious if Barlow makes the team. Doesn't necessarily feel like a lock to me. Wouldn't be surprised if HC sees him in a similar tier with guys like Lardis

It's likely the Jets will try to move someone in the top-9 next year. Iafallo is the likely target although it he keeps playing like he is, the Jets would have to give up something to get rid of him....unless they retain a small amount of salary. The Jets pretty much never promote two rookies at the beginning of the season so it's likely only one of McGroaty or Lambert will make it assuming they have a good training camp next year.

Salomonsson will require at least one year of seasoning in the AHL, if not 2 or more (we don't know if he is even good enough for the NHL). Even if the Jets are unable to retain either of Demelo or Dillon, they will likely bring in some cheap free agent from elsewhere...or trade another pick for a bottom pairing d-man. Heinola would get the other vacant spot by default.

Salomonsson hasn't played in Skelleftea's last three games after playing over 21 minutes in a game two weeks ago. Is he back with the U20 team, injured, or is something else happening?

We now have enough depth upfront that our key forward prospects outside of maybe McGroarty are all going to be slow baked. I wouldn't expect guys like Lambert, Barlow etc for a couple of years.

See Heinola for a likely template for what the org is likely to do development/timeline wise.

I don't really expect many prospects picked in the latter half of the first round and beyond to kick the door down and force their way on to the big team. Honestly, I don't really see the kind of production or upwards trajectory of any prospects in our pool that would say they should go straight to the NHL.

Agree to an extent. I think the Jets will bring in young forwards more quickly and it will be driven by cap considerations and waiver eligibility. They will likely need to introduce some forwards on ELC in the next couple of seasons to replace Iafallo, Appleton, etc. so that they have cap space to extend Perfetti, Vilardi, Connor and Ehlers. On D, they'll need to replace Schmidt with an ELC if they want to extend Dillon and DeMelo.

Regardless, I wonder if the Jets might consider moving a young forward player/prospect instead of a pick if they can, especially since they have already traded their 2024 1st round pick.

Agreed but they won't rush them in. If they move out Iafallo this summer then that opens a spot for McGroarty next year. Lambert likely takes Namestnikov's the year after and Barlow Nino's the year after that if all goes well. The org likes Appelton for some reason so I can see them wanting him to stick around provided it's not to pricy.

I also agree with your trade thoughts. I have thought for a while now that we have some good forward prospects that likely won't fit in long term here and that it would be best to move them for defensive help while they still have value.

A guy like Kupari is interesting to me as the org indicated he'd be given a look at a bigger role this year, but actually finds himself in the same if not lesser of a role then he had in LA. What is the plan here? If there isn't one then it would make sense to include him.

I agree with your assessments. I think Kupari might be a good replacement for Appleton, but Bowness really seems to like Appleton.

Barlow with both goals in a 2-1 OT win tonight. 14 goals in his last 10 games, I believe.
His projected numbers for this year are at best on a par with last season, maybe not even that.

Is he really progressing?

Dallas is on a real run with Stankoven. They really are good with the draft.
Stars have shown that you can build a strong team with lower 1st and 2nd round picks.

Come to think of it, so have the Jets (recently).

Chibrikov was drafted a few picks after Stankoven in the same draft. Lambert was drafted a year after Stankoven.

The Jets have built a very good top-7 of prospects with good recent drafting...

McGroarty
Lambert
Barlow
Heinola
Salomonsson
Chibrikov
Lucius

Could be the second coming of Trouba for the Jets (minus the contract drama).

80 PIMS in 31 games across all formats this season without any fighting majors lol.
To be fair I think 45 of those PIMs came from 3 penalties. At least 30. They're very quick to hand out 10 minute misconducts internationally.

With that being said, love that he has some bite to his game. He got notably stronger from last year so this whole overpowering opponents element is pretty new to his game.

Also by my count it's 89 PIMs
