Florida is a team that has really been constructed by trades and free agency. Barkov, Ekblad, and Lundell are the only Florida drafted players.
Amenity rich locations like Florida will always have a comparative advantage.

Name an advantage Winnipeg has over Florida?

Ya know if you would have told me that the two biggest keys to winning the championship would disappear during the memorial cup, I would have said we were bounced out.

But the players that have been with this team for the year, the second/Third line guys, the guys with maybe not quite the talent of a lambert/Guenther, have taken over. Davidson, Gustafson, Ciona, Crnkovic.

Still need two more wins, just love seeing everyone contributing

The first line needs to get going and its never too late in this short tournaments.

I still think that we could have a similar turnaround timeline as 14-15 -> 17-18.
I dunno...that 14-15 core was pretty young and deep. Skill players 30 or younger were Enstrom, Buff, Ladd, Wheeler, Little, Frolik, Perreault, Schiefele and Trouba. The only big drawback was goaltending...which was fixed by Hellebuyck. Plus between 14-15 and 17-18 the Jets added Ehlers, Connor and Laine to the skilled player camp, and Lowry, Copp, Tanev and Armia for depth (although they lost Ladd and Frolik).

I don't think we're nearly as skilled or deep as in 2014-2018. The core skill guys under 30 are Morrissey, Ehlers, Connor, Dubois, Niederreiter, Perfetti, Samberg and Pionk. Depth is Barron, Lowry, Appleton, Dillon, Schmidt? I guess some players will be traded...remains to be seen when and how much impact we'll get out of the trades.

Who's going to make the jump in the next 2 seasons to have an impact? Lambert, Lucius, McGroarty, Chibrikov?

I mean, are any of the 4 players drafted over the last couple of years going to be equivalent to 2017-18 Laine (44g, 26a) or Connor (31g, 26a) or Ehlers (29g, 31a)?

I just don't think it lines up...a major retool is needed and a lot of picks are going to have to turn into home runs.

I agree with this. I think our next peak will be when Perfetti, Morrissey and Samberg are the vets, we have Lambert, Lucius, McGroarty and Salomonsson in their primes and we have a few high end lottery pieces about to enter their own primes. These would be in addition to the mid to high level prospects we get back for PLD, Scheifele and Helley (fingers crossed) this summer and Ehlers and Connor a couple years after that. That's the only sensible timeline to get back to contention that I can imagine.

If we try to sustain some kind of playoff/bubble team right now we greatly reduce the peak we would otherwise see in the next 5 or so years (unless we get extremely lucky drafting superstar talent outside of the top 10). I think a lot of us underestimate how valuable some of those pieces we inherited from Atlanta were. The prospect pool was bare, but they put together a decent core that became high-end once it was supplemented by the Winnipeg picks.

To me we need about two to three more elite prospects to form a high end core.

We have Perfetti and maybe Lambert and DiVincentiis as top of the line up guys to go with JoMo and whoever else is left over from our current core.

The McGroarty, Lucious, Snerg, Heinola etc group probably can fill middle of the roster spots in the future.

Agreed. The only hope I see for us to bite the bullet and do an actual rebuild. Move the pending UFAs for picks and prospects and let the team bottom out to get some elite top 5 picks. People will have to accept that it will be painful and the best possible hope to get back to contention would be 5-7 years away. If it’s time to move on from the current core let’s at least try and do it right.

Yeah. Maybe we get one of those pieces from selling off our current expiring guys. But we are likely going to need two lottery years to really build that elite foundation.

Agreed you get the extra picks and prospects with your pending UFAs and then add a couple of elite top 5 picks with a bottom out. That in addition to our current crop of prospects at least gives us a chance to build back a contender.

If we don't bottom out, then Chevy absolutely has to find quantity for quality trades and will need some strong drafts to attain the pieces to make that work. I'm thinking like the ROR to St Louis or Eichel to VGK trades. It's not often you have an elite center signed long term with no trade protection but they are out there. (Side note: how did Buffalo bungle that center depth?).

Mind you, I have great faith in Chevy's ability to hit with a top 10 pick. I don't have good faith in his ability to swing the type of trade he will need to if we don't bottom out. I hope the org sees the path they are most likely to succeed with.

Yeah, we are accumulating some good future middle six depth. Maybe even a top liner or two.

We are going to need several top line calibre players back from moving Scheif/PLD/Helle and the draft if we aren't getting a franchise player in the top 5. It can be done but it's a tall order...

Since no one wants to be here, we don't have crowds? :sarcasm:
Gonna actually agree.
Ever been camping in BC? Drive 4-6 hours to a place thats packed. Beaches are the same. Not the case in Manitoba, at least it wasn’t when I was still living there. But of course lots of model T’s still in the road then too.

Seattle plays Peterborough. Talk about a rope-a-dope in ot. Totally outplayed then one back the other way to end it. Defenceman taking out his own goalie probably didn't help.

Strange game. Blazers dominated a lot of the game. Zellweger was dynamic, but he's high risk along with high reward. The Blazers couldn't clamp down on a 4-1 lead.

Blazers deserved to win, but I'm not unhappy that Seattle doesn't have to play them yet again. It was getting tedious watching that matchup repeatedly.

I think Chevy has left it too long to get young top line players back. Our pending UFAs will likely bring back a Trouba type return. A mid round pick and a prospect or young player that the other team doesn’t consider part of their core. Better that than aging players on bad contracts.

The only one that may get a top prospect is Helle.

The others get B level prospects and firsts.
