Maybe he is done with the organization but it would appear there is zero interest around the league for his services. On just about every team he would be deep depth and they would be more interested in developing more promising prospects. When you hit age 24 and are 11-13 depth. on a bubble team you have no value anywhere. Guys like Capo and Kovy are always available to fill out rosters.
How do we know there's zero interest around the league for his services? May well be true but right now we don't know that.

Seems pretty obvious. He has been waived through the league and he has no current interest. Just as a comparison Capo was close to a PPG D man in the AHL at the same age with a much better defensive game. He is a 7/8 D man in the NHL and players like that are always available to fill out rosters. Gawker is a level or so below this. There will probably be a 100 or more D man that don’t make the NHL next season that GMs would have above him. He will have a nice career back home and good for him but the NHL dream is over.

Clearing waivers at the beginning of the season doesn't mean much. There are so many players on waivers and you don't claim somebody when they aren't needed on the active roster. Same reason another team will take him and send him down, because he won't be picked up and they'll have a chance to work with him and see what they have with him in their own farm and he's quality depth if injuries hit. Plus he went on to have a very good season after he cleared.

Again, time will tell. I'm not saying he'll be an NHL player, I'm saying he's the type of asset a team will take a swing on and if it doesn't work out then nothing has been lost. If anything makes him undesirable it'll be the attitude he had going out.

No he isn’t a player teams take a swing on. He is 24 and deep depth. He is a player NHL teams completely ignore and they go off and carve out a career in a lesser league.

Offer sheet could happen when his contract expires. Risk for him though because if the Jets want to be petty they can just match it. He'll be traded for pretty much nothing and will come back with a new team and likely be back in the AHL to start next season. He's pretty much a free young asset with upside and it's clear that his end goal is to play in the NHL. I don't think he'd have any issues going to the AHL with a new team he's just done with this organization.

Why would you want to sign him at 25 when he wasn't good enough overall defensively in the AHL over multiple seasons after going away from NA for one year (which probably isnt going to necessarily help his defensive game regarding the NHL level)?

I expect Gawanke to be a bit disppointing in the DEL. Probably he's going to be a pretty good player but I don't expect him to be like the best defenseman or anything. I watched him closely in the WC. Germany lost 2-5 vs Canada (was 2-3 until EN time) on Sunday in the finals. In the 4.5 games I watched, he never stood out to me. Had 3 assists in 8 games which was actually 2nd fewest points on the German defensive corp. Other than Seider, none out of those players are high calibre players. He even was a -1 on the team. Other Dman with 3 or more games:

Seider +6
Wissmann +7 (AHL)
J. Müller +6 (DEL)
M. Müller +4 (DEL)
Szuber -1 (DEL)

I see no reason to expect him to light up the DEL and get to a "we need to sign that guy"-kind of status after one year in the DEL. To be honest, I only expect his flaws to be an effective NHL calibre D-man to get bigger.

His value in the DEL is that he isn't an import. If his offense translates they can spend $ elsewhere.

Agreed. The legend of Chevy as a draft master should be vanquished.

A draft and develop team that has not drafted nor developed particularly well for several seasons.
This needs doesn't get the attention it deserves. I can recall Lucas Sutter in the second round that didn't even get a contract, True they have done well to take players that have fallen to them like Connor, Ehlers, Perfetti (but given his injury history maybe teams knew something the Jets didn't), and now hopefully Lambert. But outside of round 1 picks they appear to average at best.

Do you know the 2 teams in the finals this year have 1 player drafted after the 1st round that has actually played for them? Nic Hauge for Vegas

Ok lets just break down our division

Colorado - Sam Girad 2nd round pick
Dallas - Robertson 2nd round, Hintz 2nd round, Lindell 3rd round
St Louis - Kyrou 2nd round, Toropchenko 5th round
Winnipeg - Lowry 3rd round, Appleton 5th round, Samberg 2nd round, Gustaffsson 2nd round, Helly 5th round
Blackhawks - Kurashev 4th round, Mitchell 2nd round
Preds - Sissons 2nd round, Trenin 2nd round, Parssinen 7th round, Novak 3rd round, Josi 2nd round, Carrier 4th round, Saros 2nd round

Just in our division we have 5 players after the 2nd. Only the preds have more in their lineup and they decided to enter into a bit of a rebuild.

We are not average at worst its likely we are above average at worst. There are some really elite level drafting teams but we are likely just behind the Tampas of the league

Florida is a team that has really been constructed by trades and free agency. Barkov, Ekblad, and Lundell are the only Florida drafted players.

Benn is what, a fifth rounder for Dallas
Blues, has Binington, Blais is a blues pick, but dunno if we should count him
Avs, Francouz and Ben Mayers are non-drafted UFAs
Wild has Kaprizov... Spuergon was never signed by Islanders, so UFA signing
Im ignoring Arizona and Hawks, because they have not seen playoffs in years and have drafted a lot
Jets are not that much better, we just always hitted on our first rounder bewtween 2011-2016 (not Stanley)

You are looking at an incomplete data set. Both teams in the final have been built through trade and FA signings.

Vegas especially has traded away picks and prospects for established players. How many of their own 1st rd picks are playing for them? Zero. They have 1 in their system. Obviously not a Draft & Develop team.

Edit: Fla has 2 of their own picks playing, a 1st OA and a 2nd OA. That's it.
Edit edit: correction, Fla has 3. Add Lundell. 12th OA.

Its the idea that the Jets are a "poor" drafting team. They are not. They are far from it. It also shows how difficult it is to be a pure draft/develop team and win.

Totally agree that you can't just draft and develop to contend. If you look at our contending team (2018), while that team had a lot of drafted players in key roles, it also had several key plays that had been acquired via trade: Stastny, Wheeler, and Buff were all huge pieces of that run. PLD is the only high-end piece on our current roster that we sought via trade. I've said it before, but I'd like Chevy to be more aggressive in seeking out buy-low candidates that don't have trade protection like Atlanta did in their final year (you can add Ladd to the list of high-end pieces acquired by Atlanta via trade).

Myers, Armia, Perreault and Tanev were all valuable trade FA signings on that 2018 team. We could use a few more like them too.

They need to be drafting more. That is their big issue. 4 picks a year is not going to do it. Last year was the first time they had a "regular" 7 draft picks since 2017 where they had an extra 7th.

Yes this likely the issue. I think last year they drafted really well and its one where they had extra picks in the 1st.

Guess we will see what happens before the draft maybe we pick up some or not

A couple of teams succeeding by trading does not prove that trading is the way to go. Each year's winner gets imitated by next year's teams.

The 2 teams in the final have both gotten there by suddenly hot goalies. How sustainable will that be?

Unless the prospects from the last 2 years pan out, the Jets have been a poor drafting team for the last 7 years after having been a good drafting team for the first 5 years. That will average out as below avg if these last 2 drafts flop, avg if they succeed.

The jury is still out.

The Jets might be better off right now if they had adhered more rigidly to draft and develop. We will never know for certain.

I've been pretty critical of Chevy of late but last year's draft is starting to shape up very nicely. McGoarty is a PPG player at a top NCAA school as a freshmen with a well known ton of intangibles. At #14 this is a very solid pick. Lambert is knocking it out of the park playing with peers and likely moves into a top 15 pick if there was a redraft. If reports from Europe can be believed Solomonsson is at absolute steal as a RHD in the 2nd round. And the kicker for me is DD's development as a 7th round pick that my turn out to be a future NHL starter. He definitely has a Helly like vibe to his development to date. What I'm hoping is Chevy builds aggressively off last year's draft when moving our pending UFAs.

I also think Zhilkin could be sneaky good.

I still think that we could have a similar turnaround timeline as 14-15 -> 17-18.

Yea right now its hard to imagine a much better D+1 season for 4 of the picks so that is very encouraging.
