Why are people complaining about ice time tonight? It was pretty reasonable, Scheifele played only 20 mins and Wheeler 18. That's pretty reasonable top-6 deployment.

The best part of the game was Wheeler goal. Karmic justice for pathetic "defending" by Russell who would just lay on the ice as soon as the puck got to Wheeler. That was the hockey gods sending him a message.

Is it really pathetic though? The Wheeler low to high pass from that spot was really successful for us yesterday, they covered that seam pretty well this game. Agree, TOI not an issue tonight as it is in some, but overplaying them is going to cause them to be worn out, which they looked tonight for sure.

I'm shocked but fact they still had the most ice time is the reason. Why? Cuz tonight.. they didn't deserve it.

Fair enough. It just feels like another situation where a “grittier” player gets the benefit of the doubt. And Appleton is fine, he just doesn’t do much for me.

I like Apples but I think he is a plus fourth liner in this league whereas I think Harkins can be a plus third liner. There is more skill to his game and just as much grit. Perhaps we see him on a skilled third line when Dubois gets here.

Hopefully PLB pushes Schief for the 1C spot! Schief needs a wake up call!
I’ve been wondering if the loss of Ducky has affected his game.

I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt for his recent performance, and hope to the Hockey Gods that PLDs presence motivates him to get back in it.

I think some internal competition in combination with a redistribution of Ice time divided between PLD and 55, will do him some good.

I think the only thing is that he shoots right and Harkins left. The hole is at RW, not sure Harkins has ever played RW.
Harkins-Lowry-Appleton is the obvious answer to our checking line
That would leave a 4th line of Perrault-Statsny-Vesalainen which would deserve more than 7 minutes

Instead we will move Stats to the wing and Copp back with Lowry asap... Copp and Ehlers have SO much chemistry - can only hope Mo finally sees it but...

Connor Scheif Wheeler
Stastny PLD Ehlers
Copp Lowry Appleton
Harkins Gus Lewis

Perreault tho needs to play. He's been solid. So.. u know he bumps Harkins.

That's what Maurice will do.

Why? Can't split up 55 and 26
And gotta reunite Copp with Lowry

This is most likely..

Is it optimal? Probably not since Copp and Ehlers have crazy chemistry but it's a Maurice thing to do to keep line 1 together and f*** over the other lines.

I'd put money on this too unfortunately.

I don’t disagree that Forbert was a disaster this game, though the tying goal was with Morrissey and DeMelo and Scheifele let the pass through and Wheeler lost his man without much resistance at the top of the zone. And while the underlying numbers were worse than usual for the top line, historically they have been extremely poor in their own end so it still makes little sense to have them out in a situation that calls for strong defence.

Well it was getting close to the point where the Oilers were going to pull their goalie so Maurice couldn’t take a chance that it happened while a different line was on the ice.
Someone other than the anointed ones could have scored into an empty net.
We can’t have that.

Scheifele has played pretty well for the most part this year. He had a rough night tonight but I feel he's been good most of the other games. No real complaints with his play but he plays with wingers that don't do much heavy lifting in the dzone so it makes it hard for that line to go up against elite lines like McDavid's.

I think Dubois gives us a matchup power vs power center and that will allow us to put Mark out against other teams second lines.

Surely there has to be a better way to defend that play than just lay down on the ice as soon as the puck is on Wheeler's stick? It reminded me in NHL 20 game EASHL glitch plays.

The Oilers did have their net pulled i think but it happened right as the goal was scored i think.

Last game of 5 in 7, im not really surprised that the 1st line had trouble handling the McDavid line especially with Poolparty on it. It's a lot of speed to handle with tired legs,

Copp PLD Ehlers Connor Scheif ???
Harkins Stastny Wheeler. Perreault Lowry Apples.

Would love to see that. Force Maurice to spread out the minutes. 3 scoring type lines. I'm dreaming tho. Dubois will get here and play 16 minutes a game

I've always liked Wheeler. I'm not sure he's a plus 20 minutes a game guy anymore and I'm certainly not sure if riding 1 line in to the ground most games is a good strategy this season especially

Nothing new here. Best players would have been those who didn’t wear. Heinola, Forsberg, Dupois... you name it.

when dubois gets in the lineup they should put stastny with scheif & wheeler to help pull them out of the water with the shot metrics. they have been getting buried for 2+ seasons and connor is not doing them any favours defensively. stastny's value on this team is his ability to make his line mates better by dragging them up from out shooting opponents. this would also default scheif the shooter of the line, something missing from his game for a while. he used to sling a wrister on net every time he got near the neutral zone or circles. he's been getting far too used to deferring to connor/laine/ehlers naturally and i think it's been taking a huge part of his game away which is shooting talent and his great shot.

would like to see connor with PLD and ehlers who are both strong play drivers and can make up for KC's weaknesses better than anyone else. would be a really fast & skilled line.

I don't watch too much Oilers but I am shocked Draisaitl puts up so many points, the way he moves he looks like a freight train out there.

He is just very very smart and a precision passer with a cannon. Doesn't hurt that he is big and a tank out there.

Ducky passed last year. Scheifele in the D zone has been floating since 2019...

I think it's because his wingers are terrible defensively. Both Connor and Wheeler are not good in the D zone.. when they play an elite line like McDs they will look bad most times.. doesn't help they have been playing so many minutes the last 5 games b4.

This team will look a lot different with a big, fast, skilled C like PLD. It will give Maurice a lot more options for combinations and matchups. Let's hope he uses them fully.

Copp-Scheif-Wheeler could work too... AC is really under rated

Then reunite Harkins and Apples on the third line

Quick thoughts...

81-55-26 Horrible game from the top line. Weak in their own zone, lackadaisical on breakouts, and no energy in the offensive zone. Looked like they had no legs, which isn't a huge surprise considering how hard Maurice has been playing them.

9-25-27 Another good game. I really liked Ehlers again. He's added some deception to his game. Stastny played a smart game, but looked half a step slow. Copp with a strong game... too bad he was a bit out of position on the winning goal.

85-17-22 Another strong game from this line. Nice to see Perreault playing well. He looks fit and healthy. Lowry is having a strong season. Appleton was okay.

12-19-23 Not a great game for Lewis. Some poor decisions. Gus was fine. Smart play, but still needs a bit more speed. Harkins was really good.

44-2 Finally a strong game from Morrissey, and a much better game from DeMelo than last night overall. Calm and smart.

24-4 Okay overall, though Pionk gave up a bit too much on the rush. Forbort was solid defensively.

64-88 Here's the thing about this pair - they can have a generally solid game, and then have one or two horrible shifts that cost a goal or penalty. They don't add enough to give up those bad plays and shifts. Stanley still shows that he's progressed, but he'll need to play with a better partner than Beaulieu. Together they are trouble brewing.

Brossoit was pretty shaky, with pretty bad rebound control.

Overall, a really disappointing loss, but hard to expect much more in the 5th game in 7 nights.

Nice summery. I keep going back and fourth on who in the future Perfetti will better with. I can see him really meshing with Ehelers like Stastny has or he could be feeding passes to Conner ans Scheifele.

I agree that running our top line hard caught up to them tonight.

I think Morrissey was more comfortable due to playing with a steady competent partner that wasn't super rusty tonight. I think he'll continue to pay well with DeMelo going forward. Not such an easy gig to lineup with a new partner almost every night, especially when one of them isn't an NHL caliber player.

I'm interested to see what Maurice does when Dubois gets here. He has a number of different options he can run.
