Laine hit the net on 3 of 14 shots -- that's terrible. It's clear he's struggling, and I do think he'll get out of his slump-- but he's in a rut fairly deep.
He should never be used in overtime where there's a lot of "open ice" that favors fast players. Laine is not fast, and cannot handle the puck reliably. He gave away that puck, and cost us this game --which is not a big deal --but I'd only play him 5 on 5 - when there's other guys to cover for him--or a 5 on4 powerplay.( that'it !!! )
Kyle Connor -- should always be used on the power play -- and on 4 on 4--and especially 4 on 3 like tonight. He's fast, covers a lot of ice, and is one of our best snipers, but I didn't see him out there on the 4 on 3. Laine "should not" be on the ice. Ehlers should also be always used in this situation.
Laine should not be signed long term for $ 8 to 9 mil as some posters on here suggest. He's one dimensional player, and right now is only a "goal scorer." He has a long ways to go before his whole game comes together. Now--he can't even score, but I'm sure he'll come back to life.
I hope Chevy bridges him at about $ 5- 5.5 mil for 2 years -"no more>" Give the money to Kyle Connor--he has the whole game going for himself. Laine is a very limited player.
