Too much being heaped on Laine for sure but I don't get the point of making excuses for him.
I'm not making excuses, I'm pointing out the other players that were lackadaisical and clumsy tonight. Laine is the youngest player on the roster by more than a year. That's not an excuse so much as an observation that we should remember in the big picture.

0.921, just to be consistent.

Not a great game from most. Some looked good. Hopefully we get Buff, Ehlers (and now Morrissey) back soon so we can pick up a whack more points in the coming weeks.

He is the only winger that hasnt played with shief and wheeler. By trying everything you mean continue to saddle him with the same center that we put on our 4th line last year in the playoffs?

Try him with Copp or with shief or hell I'd even settle for him and wheeler at this point

This has gone from from stupid to oblivious to down right negligence. This is how coaches force players out of town. In his contract year it's starting to seem like are driving his value down and it's not even accidently on purpose anymore.

Laine has played with Scheifele and Wheeler quite often on the powerplay and he still can't produce.

What more can you do for Laine???

All he has done this season was prove that he is an accessory piece and can not drive his own line.

Interesting road trip coming up, Montreal tough place for the Jets to play, Ottawa should be 2 points and Buffalo on a b2b who knows.

I genuinely feel bad for Helle tonight. Dude was seemingly willing the team to a win by making critical save after critical save.

However, SJ made the adjustment to pressure the puck carrier after getting eaten alive on the first PP by the Jets and that was a wrap..

Laine got his spot on the powerplay not only for the one timer, but also the snipe wrister. He was gripping that stick like a viper. Failing the one timer and second guessing the wrister. It was painful to watch him today, as the last few months have been. I think he needs to play with Lemieux and Copp for a game or something.

Didn't think Schiefele had a great game either.

The first unit powerplay cost us that game, although the offside was unfortunate.

That observation has been made countless times by many, it's not new.

It's ok to analyze Laine on a micro level without losing sight of the big picture. Others were clumsy and careless tonight for sure, as has been pointed out. There is also a big picture element to that as well though .

He's also the most valuable in a trade. Wants the most money. He's special in every way so gets the most praise and has higher expectations placed on him.

Low hanging fruit. Nobody is going to rail at Scheifele or Wheeler or Little.

Except Wheeler and Schief are still contributing, Button was bang on, Laine keeps doing what isn't working which is the definition of insanity, move higher in the slot, go deeper once in awhile, try to physically exert yourself, all foreign concepts to Lame lately!

Laine hit the net on 3 of 14 shots -- that's terrible. It's clear he's struggling, and I do think he'll get out of his slump-- but he's in a rut fairly deep.

He should never be used in overtime where there's a lot of "open ice" that favors fast players. Laine is not fast, and cannot handle the puck reliably. He gave away that puck, and cost us this game --which is not a big deal --but I'd only play him 5 on 5 - when there's other guys to cover for him--or a 5 on4 powerplay.( that'it !!! )

Kyle Connor -- should always be used on the power play -- and on 4 on 4--and especially 4 on 3 like tonight. He's fast, covers a lot of ice, and is one of our best snipers, but I didn't see him out there on the 4 on 3. Laine "should not" be on the ice. Ehlers should also be always used in this situation.

Laine should not be signed long term for $ 8 to 9 mil as some posters on here suggest. He's one dimensional player, and right now is only a "goal scorer." He has a long ways to go before his whole game comes together. Now--he can't even score, but I'm sure he'll come back to life.

I hope Chevy bridges him at about $ 5- 5.5 mil for 2 years -"no more>" Give the money to Kyle Connor--he has the whole game going for himself. Laine is a very limited player.

Laines on pace for 53 points. Does he know its a contract year? Maybe he's just doing the jets a solid?

JMO...Laine looks like someone who used their talent to get where they are, but had an easy time of it during the journey. He is now in the best league in the world, and no one is going to make it easy on you.

I think there could be some of that. Weird how it seems to be worse this year than in his first two. Is he willing to do the work on and off the ice to get the curve moving up again?

Your problem is you are concentrating on 1 play.. Im looking at the game as a whole. 29 did not cost us the game.. Could argue 26 going offside did or could argue without 37.. Those 55 giveaways by 55 end up in the back of our net...

U concentrate on 1 play in a game with 100 different ones tho.

Absolutely everyone turns the puck over, it happens, it’s part of the game. Take a look at this graphic, Laine leads the forwards in giveaways, and you are correct Scheifele is not far behind. The difference is that Scheifele makes up for that in other areas and the most obvious one in this situation is takeaways which he is tops on the team. Also if you look at the TA/GA ratio Laine is the worst for forwards aswell with 0.5

In fact there are only 4 forwards with more giveaways then takeaways. Copp 0.9, Lemieux 0.8, Appleton 0.5, Veselainen 0.0
The last two having only 2 giveaways.

The problem isn’t just that Laine turns the puck over and that others do aswell, the problem is he doesn’t make up for them in other ways. If he was scoring he would absolutely get a pass on his turnovers but he isn’t. He’s a liability and has been for quite some time now. And the discouraging part about it is I see no change, no attempt at change. It is extremely frustrating watching him wait for the puck to come to him and then watch his feeble one had poke at the puck he is being beat to. I get that he is young, but he’s not the only young player on the team.

Entertaining game I thought. Pretty happy with a point as we were down 3 of our top 10 players against a good team.

If Bucky is back, the team will do no nothing but prosper going forward. He looked pretty damn good tonite.

Myers was good in the most mins he's played in my memory.

Didnt care for Trouba's pizza app(s).

but..

Patty though:facepalm:
My goodness I feel for the boy right now. He looks legit sick or something. I hope they're checking for insidious things like mono, lyme disease, thyroid condition, etc. Something's awry and yeah...where did all those Finnboys go? :jk:

Not mad at all about this loss. It's pretty clear this team fights hard for each other which is a very good sign.

Remember the Big Trade?
Myers got a point and E Kane was held pointless. That pleases me.
The only other player from the Big Trade to get a point was Joel Armia, who led his team in SOG. That whole affair displeases me greatly.
Bogosian was a minus 3 tonight with Buffalo. Kane was a minus 2. That pleases me.
And speaking of that reviled statistic (and potential Big Trades :naughty:), Laine was also a minus two tonight, which drives his team leading total to -15.
Helle was great tonight and deserved a better fate. That bodes well and pleases me the most.

Would've been nice to steal both points for PMo's 1500th game, but Helley can only do so much.

Really hope JoMo is okay!
Startin to get a bit concerned about him. He's taken a real beating already this year. I know he's tough AF but this is becoming cumulative. Maybe I'm rethinking Stones, Douchenes, etc and get that 2nd pairing LD to slide up in case Jomo slows.

Yes, he had played there...in the super predictable PP1 set up that every team knows and takes away the one-timer.

Our doofus coach needs to put 29 with 55 and realize that the 18/29 combo never has worked and never will work. Connor and Ehlers play with him during their slump but for some reason Laine doesn’t. Brutal coaching. Setting up our best sniper to fail. No wonder he’s never won anything as a coach.

57’s brutal pass to 55 on the power play came around the boards and handcuffed Laine that led to the SJ OT goal. That’s not on Laine.
