This one is on Chevy. I have always supported him but he always takes to long to sign his RFAs now it might come back to bite him. I hope he proves me wrong. I was hoping he would sign Trouba after Reilly was signed offer the equivalent or a little more to pacify the agent. We could end up having our 2 best young players offer sheeted and have to pay way more then we should have to or lose them for picks. Should be interesting tomorrow.:help::popcorn:

Nothing has happened yet except a few unsubstantiated rumours from some untrustworthy media. It's a bit too early to crucify Chevy yet.

Would 4 extra 1st rd picks be the end of the world? I think there's a few ways that those picks culd make this team better.

I did not say it was going to happen, just that his taking his time could lead to offer sheet. We know Reilly won't be offer sheeted because he's signed. I think Lindholm's a better target and value if they are going to throw out serious money with his teams inner cap issues. Will be glued to TSN today.chears Aavco.

Merrill was not qualified can play both sides, could he be an upgrade on Stuart.

The more I keep thinking about it I think we should pay for Backes or Neilsen.A 3rd line centre is our biggest need up from especially one that can kill penalties like these two guys.It will probably take 5-6 years at 5-6 mil a year which is a lot for a 3rd line centre but these guys are good 2nd line centres on most teams.Set up the contract similar to Buffs that allows the jets to move later in the contract. They will be insurance depending on what happens with little at the end of his contract. This is the time to overspend while the young guys are on their ELC.Dump Stafford,Burmi and Thorburn and we are in great shape. As much as I like Perreault I would prefer Backes especially in the playoffs.Perreaults role will diminish quickly as the rookies develop and surpass him on the PP etc.

Yes we have a bunch of guys who are able to play 3rd line centre but none that would do so on a good team and be called upon to be a shutdown guy.

The Jets probably still think or hope that Lowry or Copp can be effective in that role.

The 7x7 that it would take to get Backes to come to Winnipeg is not 3rd liner money.

Wait until someone else gets jumpy about the contract they give him and are willing to retain on it.

The most I would offer is 6.5 for 5 years.a line up of

Ehlers/Scheif/Wheeler
Laine/Little/Armia
Perreault/Backes/Dano

Connor,Petan,Lemieux could replace Perreault when he leaves at the trade deadline.
Centre position is the most important position after #1,2 d and if you are going to overpay anywhere it's in a position like that not on scoring wingers. We are going to pay close to 5mil for Perreault would rather have Backes who fills shutdown centre role better and would really help Scheif and little out with the tough matchups. The way our team is made up we are going to have 3 pretty even lines with no $10million dollar forwards and have an influx of young rookies on ELC now is the time to spend money on a 3rd line centre because 3-4 years from now it will be tighter.

If we let ourselves be bullied into letting Trouba go to Boston, it's pretty naive to think that in a copycat league others would not try to do the same with future talent.

It's one of the reasons Nashville matched the Weber offer sheet.

I don't disagree that the best play might be to let Trouba go to Bostoan and take the picks but the vultures swould be circling in the future.

There are ways to defend that but as a GM you give up a lot of your leverage if you are forced to sign RFA's earl, probably closer to their terms than yours so that they are not exposed on July 1.

It is a decision that they would take their time with because of the ramifications. It's not so black and white IMO.

Nashville probably should have let Weber go in the long run but I accept why they made the choice they did. At least we won't have cap recapture issues with Trouba if we match an offersheet

Who cares though? You have to look at value. You can't be worried about what ifs.

If someone offers a contract that gets us 4 firsts for JT, you take it.

If someone 'copycats' and offer sheets another one of our players in the future, you have to take that into account separately. Offer sheets are designed to protect the team getting 'poached'. The Jets would look at the player, look at the deal, look at the compensation and decide in that case whether matching is worthwhile.

I do not subscribe to this 'you have to match to send a message' theory, just as I do not subscribe to the 'Jets are cheap' fallacy. We are responsible, it's 2 very different things.

Matching an outlandish JT offer sheet just to make a statement is not responsible.

You are either left with 4 first round draft picks, or saddled with an untenable contract that will handicap you for years.

Agreed. I cant imagine many GMs around the league thinking the Jets are vulnerable because they would take 4 1st rounders. Most GMs would too most likely.
