alright, so, some preliminary thoughts about the series and loss today.
  • Vegas clearly wanted it more, hustled a lot more.
  • Vegas being able to skate to the west final playing a couple lousy pacific teams and have huge breaks between series was a lot more of a benefit that i would have predicted. it really showed.
  • Despite the above 2 points the reality is if Fleury isn't a magician in Las Vegas and Hellebuyck the 2nd coming of Pavelec we likely come home 3-1 instead of down 3-1. This will surely be lost in the narratives about Vegas' pressure and gap control. Remember it took one goaltender playing like Jesus and the other like a beer league goaltender to get two 1 goal wins (not counting ENs)
  • I still don't like the Stastny trade and this is why. We need to keep reloading and filling the pipline with prospects. Only 1 team a year can win the Cup and we just weren't ready. Go ahead, flame me.
  • This year was still a roaring success and a lot of fun. Expectations have been raised.

Loved the season... hated this series.

Some quick thoughts, for the future...

Overall, I think the Jets were just plain worn out in this series. I think the Nashville series took a lot out of their key players. That shouldn't be a huge surprise. We knew that the Central was going to beat up on the winner.

Hellebuyck made huge strides this season, but he played like he was worn out as this season wore on. He'll be fine, but the Jets need to find a back-up that can take more of the load in the regular season.

The Jets need a few more players that play in the hard areas, especially in the front of the net. They had very little net-front presence. That's why I think a player like Lemieux is going to get a long look next pre-season.

The Jets lack quickness and mobility on D. Maurice stayed far too long with Chiarot, when he had Morrow ready to go. They need another really quick D. I advocated for going after Schmidt... that's the sort of D we need. I think it's Niku time. Play him all season and get him ready for the playoffs. Either that, or go out and get another D with good mobility. Myers' lack of quickness in skating and puck movement was exposed. He doesn't belong on the PP.

Laine needs to do a lot of work on his quickness and fitness. As the series went on, he looked more and more behind the play. This off-season he should work on his skating and fitness, and maybe trim down just a bit.

Ehlers was very disappointing. I think he was running on fumes in this series. He's always better when he's rested and has some fresh legs. I think he also needs to work on conditioning.

I loved the Stastny acquisition, but he is not the C the Jets need for the future. He just doesn't have that extra gear to open up space. Little outplayed him in the Vegas series. In fact, Little was a bit of bright spot.

Buff was clearly fatigued as the series wore on. I think Maurice used him and Myers too much earlier in the playoffs. Trouba needed more minutes throughout the playoffs. He seems to thrive on it.

Connor was a real bright spot for me. He's become a tenacious player, with outstanding quickness and skill. Really impressed.

Roslovic should have been playing earlier. He is dynamite. If he can play C, I'd line to see him with Ehlers and Laine next season. He's a real keeper.

Scheifele emerged as a real star. Just an outstanding performance.

Wheeler looked pretty gassed as this series went on. I am kind of tired with hearing "Wheeler shoots, and it's wide, the Jets need to regroup in their own zone". Still, kudos for an outstanding season.

Morrissey had a great and gritty playoff. He's very skilled, but also a real gamer. Love his game.

Lowry was not nearly as effective as I expected, but I also think he was battling a significant injury.

I think Copp should have stayed in the line-up over Tanev. Tanev's goals early in the playoffs were nice, but expecting him to be a different player than he is was false hope. The Jets need more offensive punch in the bottom 6.

Perreault is an enigma. He does many things well, but he just doesn't produce enough when it's needed. I would definitely keep him next season for another run, but I don't think the Jets can afford to keep him in the longer term.

Laine is a player who cares greatly. He's scored 44 goals this year and 12 points in 16 games in his first playoffs versus opponents who targeted him out of the play as much as possible. Lets not turn on him. Or Hellebyuck for that matter. I remember a poster saying yesterday or the day before that this is only the first tough loss and that it's something every team goes through so suck it up. Harsh to hear but all part of the game. We've paid our dues like any other team now and if we get that cup one day it will make it all the more special.

Maurice has spent his career coaching young teams still in development. His win/loss record has little to do with the results he gets turning players on ELC's into NHL players.

I'm concerned.

Yup, everyone of our youngsters gained valuable experience with this loss. I would imagine its not sitting well with any of them. They have the right attitude, they will go out this summer and channel that disappointment properly.

I expect to see a very hungry team next season. I also expect our younger players will all be even better.

This was the first game of the series oustide game two where Vegas was the better team.. They wanted it and it looked like we didn't have much left in the tank.

Good for Vegas but they better hope they win this season as they will never get. 950 goaltending and all that puck luck ever again.

I'm proud of the team, they took big strides this season. As far as I am concerned this is only the beginning with this young core.

For next season our young guys need to to have a good off-eason. I would like to see Laine add some speed and quickness.

Moe needs to decide some nlknew breakout systems.

I want to see very player utilization as well like Morrissey on the PP.

Roslovic makes the team full time and hopefully they real him at C

Great post Surixon-"as always" and I totally agree with all your points --especially the one on Roslovic. He should be the # 2 center, and let Statsny "walk"--we don't need a 32 year old man on the books for 4 years--it will only drag us down--like to the tune of $ 5 mil per year--we don't need that.

Very much agree with using Morrissey on the point next year-"great accurate shot."

The Jet's have to go with youth and speed !!! Have a good summer :)

I'm disappointed that the team ended the season losing four straight but it was still a great run. There's no reason this team can't make some noise next season and this year (and this series) will give them some valuable experience. They went a round further than I expected but sadly it wasn't our year.

Congrats to the Knights on winning the West; Fleury was exceptional and was the difference in what I thought was a very even series. I hope they win the Cup (although I'd love to see Ovechkin lift it) but I think that Tampa may just edge by them.

With Fleury saving around 94 - 95 % of hisa shots--I see the Knights winning the Cup in a dominate fashion.

They were pretty tired after the Nashville series. I'm surprised they started two nights after game 7.

The Stastny trade was more than fine. Not every trade is going to result in a Cup. It sent a message to the team that we're ready to make a run, it showed that players will waive NMCs to come here. Not too bothered about giving up 29 overall for that. Without that move they don't end up in round 3.

The Tatar trade was a waste. Guy is a healthy scratch for most of the playoffs and they gave up 3 picks for him. At least Stastny was effective.

Agree with a lot of this. I think the Stastny trade was okay because we still have a very rich pipeline, and I think it was important for the Jets to make a deep run like this to prepare for future playoff runs. I think the Jets were ready to go all the way, but the Preds took a lot out of them and Fleury stood on his head. Pick will be 29th overall, so not such a huge price.

Jets have some interesting decisions in the off-season. They have a solid foundation to build on.

On the subject of Helle. I hope Mason is healthy and we can play our backup more regularly to keep Helle fresher. He didn't seem to have the same level of focus as the postseason went on and he gave up a number of uncharacteristically poor rebounds.
Ya he finally looked to tire out a bit. But even today thought he made many great saves to give boys a chance and team looked too tired too.

Jets simply ran out of steam. Helly had to play way to many games during the regular season because Mason was always hurt. He simply was too tired at the end. The rest of the team had to play too much due to the injuries we had during the regular season. Chevy has to figure out a solution for the back up goal keeper. I am not sure we can count on Mason to stay healthy. Playing Helly 66 games during the regular season is a formula for failure in the post season. I don't think Comrie is good enough to be the backup. Now we can look forward to seeing how Chevy deals with all the free agents and what our team will look like in the fall. Go Jets Go!

Now that it's over I think Morrissey, Hellebuyck, and Wheeler deserve a long rest more than anyone else. Amazing seasons from game 1 until today by all 3.

Someone in the GDT that Morrissey must be a walking bruise at this point, I can't imagine he has a part on his body that didn't hurt at some point this season.

Main boards are going to be insufferable
Never minds the main boards. Thus one is already insufferable.

It was a great season and good two rounds. VGK are fast, and rested. Jets played every other day for almost 2 weeks. Crazy. Also, Fleury had a horseshoe in his pads. At least now I can get to yard work on nice days.

Surpassed my expectations this season. Next year, I expect another WCF appearance and a win.

Go jets Go

well, that sucked. I really thought we had one more win at least in us. But it was pretty obvious the tank was empty. I don't care what the boo birds say this season was a massive success. No way to know what happens in the future, but I think we'll be back and next time we'll have a much better idea what needs to be done to get over the hurdles...

Oh, and to whomever comes out of the East - destroy the Knights. Just utterly demolish them. Makes them cry like little babies please m'kay?

Coaching was not an issue from the Jets side this series. Other than the decision to play Hendricks in those couple of games against the Preds, Maurice was fine.
Could try a bit more in-game tinkering to possibly switch things up and get things going in an elimination game.

I'm concerned.
Why? We went from an also ran well out of the playoffs to the Conference finals. That was an exceptional step forward in a single season. And considering how many young players we have that are still a few years from their primes we will continue to be a force. We learn from this and move forward.

I really didn't think Vegas was the better team tonight or for the last 3 games. Game 1 they sucked. Game 2 they were far better then us.

Then they simply got a lead and managed to ice pucks for 50mins. When they didn't they got some.pretty crazy bounces and prayed fleury would some how save 45+ shots a game.

Helly was right I've never seen a team get so many bounces so many favourable calls.

This is horrible. I couldn't careless about a Tampa bay Vegas final. If it's tied someone will have to score from their own end to win each game it will be wonderful.
