Friedman: Jets are not rebuilding, want NHL players back if they trade core pieces

Newhook + Pick #27 from Colorado for one of Scheifele/Dubois at the draft feels like a trade that makes a lot of sense for both sides, at least as the baseline of a deal. Perhaps a piece or two added from either side to balance things out more depending on which player it is the Avs end up getting.

Newhook is a young NHL player and a Center which no doubt is something the Jets are gonna be looking for if they trade one or both of the Top 6 centers they currently have.
I think this is a reasonable basis. With the Florida 1st that the Habs own sliding to #31 or #32, the Avs pick has better value and Newhook could blossom in the coming seasons with more opportunities.

Anderson likely becomes the core of any Montreal offer, then.

Or my favorite scenario, if PLD truly wants to play for the Habs :

1- Sign an offer sheet. A 1 year contract at $4,2M.
2- Jets can easily match, but then they cannot trade him during the whole year and lose him for nothing at the end of the season. So they are basically forced to let him go and take the compensation (2nd round pick).
3- PLD then signs an 8 years extension with the Habs at $8M per year.

But knowing this is about to unfold, the Habs can probably force a trade with the Jets at a very cheap price. Something like Christian Dvorak + Jayden Struble + 2nd round pick.
How many times do we need to say that this will never happen, PLD wont be with jets at 1 July, he is gone by the draft... And why should he sign for less?
Number 2, we know 2 facts, he wants to play for Montreal (he never said himself in public, but there is smoke). Nr 2, he wants to win. That aint happening with Montreal for atleast half a decade. So what do he wants more? My bet, win. So I see Jets sending him to a contender.

That's the wrong direction for them but I guess the finances of a rebuilding Winnipeg team is not a good look either.

Something around with Helle and Krebs makes sense. Currently at 3c at Buffalo but he could have potential being solid 2c. Buf needs to add. First round pick 23 or 24 and Krebs might be solid deal for both. Buffalo desperately needs good goalie to be back in the playoffs.

Decent choice. Hopefully they xan extend some of them, if not all.

That would be a terrible choice.

Jets are going to end up in no man’s land.
Not good enough to compete, not bad enough to draft franchise talent

Not shocking since they want the corporate community to step up and support the team. Not doing that if the go rebuild with mostly draft picks and or young prospects in return.

Hope is easier to sell than mediocrity with limited ceiling

Boeser (retained)+Garland for Scheifele
Jets need a centre coming back. Maybe Miller is more what Chevy would want. Long term contract. Not too sure if the Canucks would want a 30 year old Schiefele though if trading Miller. PLD for sure but he’s a UFA July 1, 2024.

Jets would match and keep Dubois for the year rather than take the measly 2nd round comp or low ball offer.

From Dubois’ perspective, why would he eat almost $3M in salary to do such a hair brained thing? Imagine how mercilessly booed he would endure all year in Winnipeg. It would be extremely uncomfortable for him.

So, why would Dubois lose earnings and be treated as a pariah? For some low odd chance that Montreal can save some assets?

Nice fantasy scenario buddy. Maybe keep those to yourself rather than embarrass yourself by posting it here.

No it's not. Especially to a business community.

We'll see, if the Jets do end up rebuilding in the traditional sense, sales are not going up. Plus that process is going to take minimum 5 years before there's any hope of the playoffs, likely it's 2030 before playoffs are a possibility.

You're not selling businesses on being a bad team for almost a decade. You might be able to sell them on playoff races and some potential playoff games.

It's not ultimately the best way to run a team from a hockey sense but pro sports are a business.

At first glance, this ^ seems well thought out, notwithstanding that the return will be more than the bold.
Howev, upon further reflection, not so much, given...

So PLD will accept a $2 million pay cut to remain in Winnipeg anyway, so that he can accept a $8+ million long-term pay cut despite becoming a UFA. Got it.

I'm not well versed in the contract rules of NHL players, but I was noticing he had a 6M x 1 year qualifying offer listed under the contract he signed for 2021 and 2022 seasons (Capfriendly), and then a qualifying offer again of 6M x 1 year for the 2023 season. Wouldn't PLD's qualifying offer be far higher than the 4.2M offer sheet you're proposing? And wouldn't these actions only be out of spite to Winnipeg? I just can't see the likelihood of it happening if I'm interpreting the situation listed on Capfriendly correctly.

For this to work, Montreal would need to trade with Phoenix to get their 2024 2nd rounder back, since that's the one needed for that offer sheet to work.

And I don't see PLD as being in any hurry to want to sign that offer sheet, for a pay cut, unless Montreal near-guarantees him to sign him in the summer of 2024. Which would be against the rules, to boot.

Or, you know, the Jets trade Dubois to one of several other contending teams that would like Dubois for next season.

If Dubois doesn't re-sign with Winnipeg he'll be traded to the highest bidder before he gets a chance to look at an offer sheet.

value of PLD as a rental cannot be underestimated

while a 2nd is a nice asset pickup, it is not suff enuf for MON to command WPG bend, buckle and break and just take it, and like it

Habs either wait the whole year, and likely get him for free,
or
they put up to have now.
Admitted, what they have to put up is to be discounted
BUT
it must still be sufficient to be adequately worthwhile.

What about something involving Scheiffele and JT Miller?

Also what about something involving Hellebuyck and Dawson Mercer?

Lindgren is the only piece that is possible match from NYR; we should be smart and sell high on him as we manage cap while awaiting bread + Trouba nmcs-.ntcs
Offers welcome, there will be competitive bidding, propose accordingly.

Other players mostly have nm/ntc restrictions.

Shesty a possible option but extremely expensive plus I don't see a currency match there

Isn't there an implied "cold weather tax" in WPG? Their cap space might get used up quickly no?

On paper WPG still looks like a team that can compete in the West.

They won’t be getting a single dime from me for a long time if they don’t.

This org loves perpetual mediocrity. Not good enough to compete for a Cup, not terrible enough to compete for the lottery.
