Friedman: Jets are not rebuilding, want NHL players back if they trade core pieces

Is there a better way to get maximum dollar on a player’s UFA contract than to float he’s not interested in one team? Then, when he’s a UFA (or looking for his next contract with his current club) his agent can ask for a big number and likely get it. Look at how much Bo horvat just got because he had Lou over a barrel. It’s about having leverage. PLD’d rumoured interest in the Habs gets him leverage.
Possibly, or it's about PLD wanting to go to Montreal. Though PLD is an RFA.

I have a feeling that if Dubois is traded to Montreal, we are getting Dach.

It’s about gaining leverage. And floating out the interest in Montreal (not by him of course) gains leverage. He’s going to get a huge contract from a team that isn’t Montreal because that team will have no leverage. PLD has it all already. Smart move by his representatives. He has to play well, of course. Which he has.

It might be. Or it's about something else.

Some posters blowing this wilding out of proportion IMO, teams restructure constantly. The idea that a team must do scorched earth rebuilds and tank intentionally to do well is wrong and only in the minds of fans.

Whether its a scorched earth rebuild or a restructure, all that matters is it well done or botched bc it doesn't matter which option a team goes if they do it poorly then its going to yield poor results.

Jets will have tons of cap space & opportunity for players who have played buried on a deep team or looking for a break on a new team. If well done, the Jets will be a playoff team again next year, if done poorly they won't be. I'm excited to see changes, new faces and new chances given to players

I was agreeing until you said Jets will be a PO team again next year. I'm not saying it needs to be scorched earth nor that they need to deliberately lose. But if they don't take a step back they will be no better than this year. I don't see any path to getting better without first getting worse. If they make the PO again next year they will have botched the restructure/retool/rebuild/whatever you call it. IMHO

I have a feeling that if Dubois is traded to Montreal, you are going to be extremely disappointed that Dach isn’t part of the deal

I dunno. I think a good chunk of the francophone fans would go ga ga over Dubois. Easy win for Kent Hughes and Gorton.

Chevy is a grinder. He almost always extracts good values from trades. He’s probably been working Hughes over for a year now.

Unfortunately they certainly would. I think if Dach was on the table the deal would already have been done. I also believe we will see a similar return that Horvat got and no I don’t feel like speculating on who’s its going to be from Montreal lol

Good question.
But why would you be nervous about Dubois?
The only problem with him for Winnipeg is that he wants to play in Montreal.
He is just about to turn 25, an ideal age for an 8 year contract.

Don't put too much weight on this statement from Friedman. Chevy never tells ANYBODY what he is thinking or planning. I think he will take the best value deals he can get. If that is futures, so be it.

What makes me nervous about Dubois is if he's worth the opportunity cost.

No doubt he's a big body that can be a heavy influencer, but I think he can be pretty flaky too.

If there was no cap, I'd be less concerned about it.

Please refresh on an aspect of the Trouba case. Were the Rangers the team he wanted to go to with rumours going on for a year that this was his desire?

The Rangers specifically? No. That region of the US? Yes. It was well documented that his fiancee was entering her medical residency and that it would not be possible in Canada due to her birth nation or some silliness about residency rules here, and that she was aiming for the Northeastern US.

Jim Rutherford was the GM of the Penguins at the time and said that he made an offer that beat what the Rangers traded for Trouba, but he was told it was New York only for Trouba.

Chevy is grinding on Hughes to get him. He just needs to squeeze him a bit more, add pressure of possibly trading him elsewhere, and Hughes may just pull the trigger for the marketing bonanza.

Just a feelin’!

Habs have a lot of cap coming off the books this year and next. Might need to pay some tanking team to take the Price contract off their hands at some point, but otherwise, cap shouldn't be a big problem for a while.

you guys need to trade him , we don't have to do anything , I'm not seeing how Hughes is not the one who will probably force Chevy to get fleeced or just not make a deal at all

Glad to see that Lane, Farrell, Beck, mailloux to name a few are just your run of the mill prospects.

None of them are sure hit A level prospects......I can't imagine even a Habs fan would honestly think that........they are B level prospects. How is that insulting to you?

I said.....IF done well they could be a playoff team......yet to be seen if its done well haha.

Depends TBH what Chevy real desire is:

- Go for some real win now pieces and fight for a playoff spot? Might do it if he wins each trade. Still not a contender.

- Or is it really he will take some depth piece and the real return is futures, but he doesn't want to call it a rebuild due to fans or corp support

There’s going to be a lot of very surprised people at the return the Jets get for Dubois.

Maybe these low ball offers from SOME of the Montreal fans has been contagious. Thinking they’re somehow going to get him at a discount. Or it’s the normal “nobody watches Winnipeg” thing.

That’s just not going to happen.

I still think he ends up in Detroit. They’re gearing up for a couple of big moves this summer and have a lot of ammunition. He fits their biggest need, and he is the “type” of player Yzerman likes at forward. Strong on his skates and creates space in traffic.

They have those 5 picks in the first 44 and they have a type of Dman prospect teams just don’t trade very often, in Wallinder. A big, pair carrying, puck mover, who they can afford to move because they have Seider and Edvinsson for the next 10 years. As well as other dmen in the system who are legit NHL prospects. Doesn’t mean he’d be part of the trade, but there’s really not another team who can include a D prospect like that without really hurting themselves.

It just makes too much sense he ends up there. They’ve basically said they’re going shopping this summer.. If Montreal wants him, they’re going to have to pay. Whether it’s Detroit or anyone else driving the price up. Anyone thinking he’ll hit UFA later is just being naive. He’s signing wherever he’s traded.

Montreal will be paying the going rate. They have the same chance of getting him as anyone else.

Yes, exactly that. If anything, more adamant than Dubois, since Trouba's partner was going to study medicine in the NY area.

Oh, no, you're all well known by now.
We might be well known by now but your proving to be well known as one who is makes up a lot of shit about what others have supposedly said which as usual isn't true.

Well if the going rate is one of Dach or Suzuki i guess the Habs will just pass.
I want to see what a team is going to pay for 1 yr of Dubois.
Anyone that thinks that Dubois is going to automatically resign with the team that trades for him as you said is just being naive when he's claimed he wants to test the UFA market.

But hes not even close to PLDs level yet and everyone here knows it and he may never get there. Habs fans snubbing their nose at a Quebec born top 6 C ready to play for them has to be the dumbest thing I've ever seen from a fanbase in my lifetime. All because they hate Winnipeg because of an incident that happened 2 years ago in the bubble.

I don't think the Habs fans want to screw over Winnipeg because of the Scheifele incident. We mostly want Scheifele to fail. And they're legitimately worried about PLD being a ME-first player and playoff choker and don't want to get rid of quality assets for that (look at the Leafs, who keep failing despite a great regular season core).

But seeing your team with not much in the cupboards and a toxic core that definitely won't get traded for an equal return.. Is a bit satisfying.
