Rumor: Jesse Puljujarvi Part 3: Maybe He Picked Out His Brain Through His Nose One Lick at a Time?

I agree that taking comments out of context to condemn a 21 year old kid is not fair. But it does not change the fact that what he needs to do is prove that he deserves those opportunities. He could sign with the Oilers and come back and play to a level that would force the team to give him the chance he is looking for, or at the very least prove to teams that he wants to be traded to that he is a good pro. Regardless of the actual context of his comments his unwillingness to play with the team is not a good sign. Intended or not, it does suggest an undeserved sense of entitlement.

willing to give-up is also the part of Puljujärvi that I don't like. However, I am not sure whether it's about sense of entitlement or maybe he just thinks that no matter what he does they don't respect him. Communication is the key. One should be told why he is sent to the minors and why he is called back up. If he felt like he was the ball in a pinball machine, it might have lowered his self-confidence until he couldn't take it anymore.

Because I also follow soccer, my take on the situation is a little bit different.

In European football, players quite often 'agitate for a transfer' if they want to move on and kick up a stink either by themselves or through their agent until their team lowers their transfer fee.

The problem with Puljujarvi doing it is that the NHL isn't European football. He's RFA, so he can't move around in the league without the other team giving up compensation, which he has yet to prove he is worth.

He also can't move to the Spanish/English/Italian/German league and make what he's making now, so his options are to tuck his tail between his legs and sign a new contract with the Oilers, play in Europe for a significantly lower salary, or sit out, which would basically be career suicide at this point.

Basically, he doesn't realize he has zero leverage at this point in time.

The La Liga he'd be playing in pays a lot less than the soccer La Liga!

Why is he being sent to minors?
Because he's not good enough

They don't respect him? Well hard to respect a guy that expects things when they aren't deserved. Respect is earned.

More and more likely it seems that McDavid quote about get out if you don't want to be here is directed towards JP (and a few others)

Then again, coming from you saying how JP should just tell the team to F off, not surprised how you'd try to rationalize his poor behavior.

Maksimov and Benson might make us forget about poor Puls in a few months. Eventually you move on with the people who want to be there. According to what I have read both Max and Benson have good work ethic. Looking forward to seeing both in action this Fall.

Connor is not only a superstar he is also mature well beyond his years. A very rare combination. Puls would do well to get the message that McD offered up.

Seriously I have no idea why Lehto gave him the advice he did and is playing his cards this way. I'm not familiar with agents. Does he represent a lot of other players? Just curious what his track record is as an agent (if anyone knows)
Contracts by Agent | Puckpedia

Ranks 13th overall in total contract dollars. Rask, Lindell, Teravinen and Koskinen are the top 4 per year clients.

The problem I have is we don't know what the agent has said to Jesse. It is highly irregular for an agent to come out and say anything on his own unless there is something morally done wrong. The agent should be making recommendations with Jesse signing off on them.

The other things I wonder are

1. Is Jesse just that stupid and doesn't realize what he is saying? I mean we've seen it before where guys will do interviews in their hometowns where they open up more and are just being honest? If so Lehto should be telling Jesse that he shouldn't saying anything about his future in Edmonton other than my agent is dealing with it.

2. Any chance Lehto speaks up as often as he does to take the heat away from his client and put the focus on the agent more than the player?

Honestly once the season starts there probably won't be a lot of focus on Jesse. It's not like if all our wingers struggle this year that people are going to be coming out and saying "too bad we don't have Jesse right now".

Exactly, if he scored 20 goals last year then it would be different but with Lucic like snipes then who is going to voice an objection?

His jersey on sale at local stores or do they wait until he's actually dealt to do that?
Hopefully neither. Something about seeing a name that looks like a random assortment of letters over a number that big is so visually unappealing to me. It's not the guys fault that I'm an idiot about it but I couldn't look at it and think "legend" the way I could someone like Malkin, Selanne, Sundin, Lidstrom, Kurri or even Kucherov -who I think was a Jagr fan growing up simply switched the 6 and 8

You get a vibe looking at a jersey once upon a time not knowing who the player is and you can develop an impression that's often incorrect but sometimes is

In terms of general perception re. attitude, I find it interesting to compare the messaging that Jesse Puljujarvi and his camp are putting out to that of fellow Oilers prospect Cooper Marody. Granted, Marody has the advantage of speaking to us directly in English instead of through a computer translator but this interview with Jason Gregor is still definitely worth a listen...

Thanks for the link. I just missed it yesterday and wanted to give it a listen. Only thing I really caught later on was his the clip of his new song.

I read about this on twitter. Sure both have similar ambitions but the difference is how they get there. IIRC, Marody is willing to work his way up; JP just wants top 6 now.

This really is the downside of drafting so high up in the draft. You draft a guy in that slot and they want NHL now.

Marody as a 6th rounder was in no rush to make it to the NHL and knows he had things to work on to make the next level.

Yeah, my read of the situation was that Pulju bit off more than he could chew and Lehto tried to take the fall, quite successfully I might add. Thing is Jesse then continued pontificating and here we are.

I don't think Lehto would be so successful if he acted this way under his own volition. He's upholding his contractual obligations to Jesse and trying to salvage value there. He's okay with being the bad guy, and that makes sense.

For fairness, I think every player should have to use the Stephen Hawking translator voice for their interviews.

Communication is a big part of this which makes Jesses lack of commitment to learning English all the more troubling.

should change his name to jesse poopoo and change jersey numbers and just pretend hes a new guy with a new attitude

I don't know why but...

I keep seeing "Disaster's" on the helmet

Alternately "Diva's"

Plus does this picture represent an accurate Venn diagram of Pulju's head?

Small cranium for small brain. Big nose to pick out of, and gigantic tongue for alleged nose picking.

This post is a dumb as Puljujarvi.

Somebody photoshop him in Ren and Stimpy.

Any time I see an agent doing or saying something stupid, I have to remind myself that the agent works for the player. I sincerely doubt, given all that we know about Jesse now, we should pin much on Lehto.

Posted this on the main boards in the whipping boy thread, but is it possible that our 2019-20 whipping boy is Jesse?

If the guy continues to talk, will it deflect some attention away from the actual problems with the team?
