You predicted COVID-19?
We were having these discussions after that started, bro. I said the flat cap might cause Hall to take less term and money than you might expect. You guys swore otherwise.

Oh. I was dumb. You were right then. He really is the one guy who got the most screwed because of the pandemic, when it comes to NHL player contracts, right? A lot of guys did, but I’m not sure anyone more than him. I really like Hall, too. Sucks.

Some of it is self inflicted. He’s made some iffy decisions on where to sign and/or get traded to.

I don't really see what Chariot adds to the Oilers at that value. Seems like a Holland type move though.
Chariot is a strong 2 way defenseman that could play up the lineup with top pairing defenseman. As an example look what he and weber were able to do come playoff time last year, Oilers D is primarily puck-moving and Chariot will slot nicely in too insulate the youngsters or pair with a puckmover. Finally while this website loves it's puckmovers come playoff time GM's love big nasty 2 way defenseman like Chariot

Trade Deadline Examples
Savard - 1st TB
HurricanesBrady Skjei (D)Rangers2020 first-round pick
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
SabresBrandon Montour (D)DucksBrendan Guhle (D), 2019 first-round pick
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
Jake Muzzin (D)KingsCarl Grundstrom (F), Sean Durzi (D), 2019 first-round pick
[TBODY] [/TBODY]

Again I don't believe he gets a 1st + top prospect I believe he gets a 1st or top prospect come deadline, expiring contract + playoff performance last year.

Don't you tease me with someone actually good when Ben f***ing Chiarot is what we'll end up with.

Ben Chiarot isnt bad he just isn't great, he is a solid 2nd pairing guy. The problem is we use him on the first.

He has also been great in the playoffs for us an area where the Oilers have struggled.

It makes sense tbh but the price will be interesting, Habs prbly want a late 1st.

I mean I can see it happening, but Muzzin was a different class than Chariot with a ring as a top pairing D and Montour and Skjei were much younger than Chariot.

Dont disagree, but in Muzzin and Montours case they got extra pieces back,

I think his contract size ($3.5M) without term, his playoff experience last year and his reputation as low maintenance is going to make him an enticing piece for GM's who are looking to go on a run and someone like EDM or even TOR who needs experiencing getting deep is going to snag him. Friedman even said as much during his 32 thoughts podcast this weekend, that he thinks Chariot goes for a 1st come the deadline and EDM is a fit and that when he was a FA Toronto wanted him as well.

Brian Dumoulin would make the Oilers a legit contender outside of goaltending and he has a year left on his deal.
My main question would be: If he is so good why have the Pens not been a contender with the offensive players they have for a long time. The fact that your asking for both Broberg and a 1st kills any credibility your argument might have. Broberg was Draft 8th overall and is tracking very nicely.

If we are moving Broberg and 1st we are getting back a serious player who is signed semi long term not a tweener.

Brian Dumoulin has two Stanley Cup rings and was the top LD defenseman on the 5th best team in the league last year.

Not sure how that is a tweener. The deal with a 1st and Broberg also included taking Russell’s cap and retain on Dumo at 1.25 over this year and next.

Holland moved 3rd and 4th round picks for Dmen like Green and Kulikov. He didnt even give up a 1st for Athanasiou who was not a pending UFA. Trading away the 1st when he has Nurse and Keith at LD already makes little sense.
Doubt Chiarot will push either Keith or Nurse down to the 3rd pairing.

What a cringy take on Dumoulin.

Could look at Dumoulin or Pettersson or even Matheson if they want someone long-term. Matheson's skating + Drai + McDavid...be tough for the other team to keep up to be honest.

Dumoulin will command a 1st+top prospect. #2 top pairing, 29yo, heavy minute eater, signed this year and next to a comfy $4.1mil...I mean, that's lush. He'll get that if Hextall is so inclined.

Pettersson I think we could probably go cheaper but the 1st + basic level prospect, maybe Lavioe?

Matheson would be tough to value.

This should really just be for the deadline. There's no need to rush a trade. In the meantime getting longer looks for players like Broberg is good, the club doesn't need help making the playoffs. Unless the plan is to scratch Keith to keep him fresh?

I think for the playoffs:

Nurse - Bouchard
Chiarot - Ceci
Keith - Barrie
Russell

Might work? Chiarot is really the ideal target. He should cost something like the #30th OA or maybe a pair of 2nd rounders. He will not cost a top prospect.

It is obvious that this is the year that the Oilers need to push in their chips and go for it. But we'll have to wait and see what the biggest needs are. Some days it looks like they need a starting goalie, some days they have a big 3C problem, some days it is LD that is the problem. It makes sense that they would invest in all of these areas. I wouldn't think that LD is where they need to invest the most.
