No reason to fire AV until we sell tbh. The last thing we need is a new coach to breath some life into this team before the deadline and force management to make a playoff run. AV is the best shot we have to fully convince management it's time to sell. I would like to see a new coach or at least an interim coach after the TDL that will use a d-system that isn't awful. I think that's the best we can hope for.

Dear (STH),

As a Season Ticket Member, we consider you a part of the New York Rangers family, and always want to ensure we share important news about the organization directly with you. Today, we want to talk to you about the future.

As you know, since the 2005–06 season, we have been a highly competitive team. We have played 129 playoff games, won the Presidents' Trophy, reached the Conference Finals three times, as well as the Stanley Cup Final. While we're proud of all those accomplishments – we didn't reach our ultimate goal of bringing the Stanley Cup back to New York.

So as we do every season, we have been continuously evaluating our team, looking for areas that can be improved to enhance our chances of winning. We began the process of reshaping our team this past summer, when we traded for assets that we believe will help us in the years to come. As we approach the trade deadline later this month and into the summer, we will be focused on adding young, competitive players that combine speed, skill and character. This may mean we lose some familiar faces, guys we all care about and respect. While this is part of the game, it's never easy. Our promise to you is that our plans will be guided by our singular commitment: ensuring we are building the foundation for our next Stanley Cup contender.

There are no fans like Rangers fans. You are passionate, loyal and true. You fill The Garden every night, and we always know there will be a strong showing from RangersTown in every building across the League. We do not take your support for granted. We appreciate that you have always stood by us, and we ask you to remain by our side as we undertake this exciting new chapter filled with promise and change.

We will keep you informed as this process takes shape. Thank you for the incredible loyalty, pride and respect you show to the New York Rangers, each and every day.

Jeff Gorton Glen Sather

let's take a look at Gorton's report card here

what do we have in return for the Carl Hagelin trade..............NOTHING
what do we have in return for the Eric Staal trade...................NOTHING even worse Eric Staal is now tearing it up for the Minn Wild
what do we have in return for the Stepan trade.........DeAngelo ?? terrible
what do we have in return for the Cam Talbot trade.............NOTHING
what do we have in return for the Anti Raanta loss................NOTHING

Shattenkirk and Vesey came here on their own accord, no help from Gorton
I will give him full credit for the Zib / Brass trade that was a good one

other than that he is a horrible incompetent GM

I remember when people were trying to say "Give Etem a chance." If Gorton doesn't get major loot for Mac and Zuc, I could see Sather giving him the boot and taking the reins again.

Earlier in this thread, there was a debate regarding how much ownership cares about playoff revenue and how much pressure Dolan puts on management to make the playoffs. It has long been suggested by many people that Dolan cares more about that revenue than he does about winning, and therefore the Rangers will never rebuild. I think that debate is pretty much settled at this point, but here is a little more evidence of why the Rangers aren't all that concerned with playoff revenue:

Rangers No. 1 in gear sales; Knights No. 4

According to Fanatics, which runs the NHL's ecommerce shop and produces its replica fan jerseys, the New York Rangers are the top-selling team this season for all items, from jerseys to hats to jackets and other gear.

The Winter Classic helped. Lundqvist had the 5th best selling jersey last year, and is 3rd this year. Zucc wasn't in the top 20 last year, but he is 5th this year. Now, if Zucc gets traded, that will certainly impact Ranger merchandise sales, but imagine if the Rangers get the 1st overall pick and draft Dahlin?

RFA we could not afford. Hagelin had limited value
what do we have in return for the Eric Staal trade...................NOTHING even worse Eric Staal is now tearing it up for the Minn Wild
This was not a good trade. Staal was a bad fit.
what do we have in return for the Stepan trade.........DeAngelo ?? terrible
We got rid of Stepan who had 4 years left at 6.5m with a NTC/NMC. In return we got the 7th overall pick which we used for Lias Andersson, and Anthony DeAngelo, a 22-year old D-man. It's a bit early to judge here.
what do we have in return for the Cam Talbot trade.............NOTHING
27-year old backup goalie, on a 1-year extension, 1 year removed from UFA, in an off-season with younger goalies with higher value on the market.
what do we have in return for the Anti Raanta loss................NOTHING
A backup goalie... Who was a an addition to the Stepan trade. See above

I think it's a little early to say that. For all we know they sell this year and go right back to buying UFAs, making futures for vet trades this summer or next year if things look less than promising. That could be their version of a rebuild. There is fan talk about bringing back, Nash, Grabner, trading for Martin, and signing Kovalchuk, if Rangers management has similar ideas I'm not sure I'd call that a rebuild.

It would look more like they tried to retool, failed to make the playoffs, and then decided to call it a rebuild where they end up pretty much having the same team only with some different players.

So were ignoring facts we don't like here? We also added shatty which we wouldn't have done without trading stepans salary. He's a big asset.

Zibanejad trade?

Nick Holden trade was a very strong one.

Also calling deangelo terrible this length of time into his rangers career is ridiculous. Literally every defenseman has been some shade of terrible for us this year. Everything about this teams been broken thanks to idiotic coaching and personnel/injuries

Is gorton perfect?

No.

There's more to it than these individual parts. The staal trade was awful because our coach mismanaged him from the beginning.

There's plenty to complain about in retrospect but to me..how did u feel when those moves happened?

I'm calling the stepan trade a solid b. I like lias...and I've seen flashes of'brilliance from Ada and shatty was fantastic till his knee died in him.

The hagelin trade was meh..etem fell apart but hagelin had a huge payday coming...if we didn't have girardi and staal then is he moved?

I've liked a ton of what jg has done as a whole....it will all be for nothing though if he doesn't fire av this off-season.

So much of the criticism of Gorton hinges of fans over inflated views of what guys are worth. Stepan was going to return Max Domi or Dvorak and both first round picks to a lot of people around here. Setting unrealistic expectations and then crucifying the GM because he didn't meet them is a total sham.

Unfortunately people will continue to do this. So when McD goes for less than a blue chip prospect playing in the NHL and multiple firsts, people are going to throw a fit.

The question stands, though. Was it worth it to trade Stepan for that return instead of just holding on to him? I think it's fair for some people to believe yes and other people to believe no.

Meanwhile, if they don't re-sign Smith, they can afford both Stepan and Shattenkirk.

There were other ways to "transition" this roster that some people believe could've been better.

I don't think it's an awful argument to say that Gorton put together a pretty average team with bad depth. A lot of that hinged on trading the team's 1C and not getting any immediate forward help back.

Lol do you really think Sather ever gave up control? His hands are all over these decisions but now he has a scapegoat in Corton.

some good points. Also it was Sather that tied up payroll with Girardi and Staal contracts, putting Corton in a tough spot.

100% yes. I don't even know how this is a question now that we have the gift of hindsight. The Rangers got out from under a heavy contract just in the nick of time. Chayka bought a year too late on both Stepan and Hjalmarsson, at least he can still move the latter.
