Confirmed with Link: Jay Woodcroft and Dave Manson fired - no more Woody during NNN - Kris Knoblauch hired, Coffey as assistant

General consensus from oiler fans is that woody shouldn’t be fired?

You not paying attention lately?
Either they played well against Seattle because they knew Woody was gone, or they played well against Seattle because they're fully capable of it and decided to put their work boots on.

Either way it's concerning.

The reason either McD or Drai go supernova is themselves. What we've seen in their career is a pretty natural progression that occurs as the players hits prime.

The other major factor is we finally had enough quality players to stick on a PP. I would attribute improvement on that unit also to Gulutzan, who is still here.

What you could focus on is Nuge. He's the one player that had a major bump. Argument could be made that Woody helped improve Nuges play.

Yeah. I think McDrai going supernova is more to do with a historical power play, Which is more of a credit to the players (McDavid, Draisaitl and RNH in particular) and Gulutzan.

This team has levels that they could go up on 5 on 5 play. And obviously their PK is dreadful.

I don’t know how much credit Woodcroft should get. But I also don’t think Woodcroft was telling players to put forth a lazy effort wise or not try defensively.

In any event, I just hope we see this team play better moving forward.

Should JJ not hire his guy when the opportunity presents?

I just think its a gong-show that Jeff Jackson is taking over the team and there seems to be two parties within executive management of this franchise, with two different ideas on how the team should be ran.

How is that not a toxic gongshow?

Seems pretty clear to me after that Gazzola clip + this hire that Jeff Jackson and Coffey are freezing Holland out.

Between the Pracey hire (and Wright fire), new analytics guy hire, other numerous hires, and KK hire, it’s clear that Jackson is running this team and is the final decision maker. Holland is just finishing his contract and is giving Jackson his opinion.

Man I wish I got 5M to just give my opinion lol

Doesn’t feel like Jackson is actually running proper processes and hiring the most qualified person. Feels like hes hiring his friends. It’s basically the definition of nepotism. But unfortunately that’s how the majority of the world works. People are comfortable with the relationships they have built. Time will tell if his decisions actually are good ones. I am skeptical but hope I am wrong.

True, that's a mess. This is the trouble with failing people upwards and the team always trying to control the optics and narrative of their messed up organizational structure. Just cut ties completely with Lowe, Nicholson, Holland, Schwartz.

Gong show
I thought a lot of us wanted Holland to not make moves. Now you're saying it's a gongshow that Jackson is making moves?

What are you talking about?

The guy has been here for less than 6 months and he's already "hiring friends" and there is "nepotism". This fan base lmao

“Loved playing for Woody and Mance”

“They are great coaches”

“Woody never lost the room”

Hope Jackson knows what he’s doing here with this Knob hire.
"Woody never lost the room." Oh so this is actually the greatest collection of sucky players the world has ever known...or the team was listening 100% to Woody and Manson as they lost their damn minds. Either way it was the right move.

Just watched KK’s pregame interview.

Nice not watching Woody’s bullshit sound bites and fake platitudes anymore. Just straightforward and honest answers and a nice human moment.

This happens with every new coach here, lol. When they first come in "the way they talk is a breath of fresh air!".

Lets see if he can coach any defensive structure and accountability out of this group.

Yes and no. There has to be more substance to hiring your guy, than simply - he's your guy.

Woodcroft is a good coach with a couple of fatal errors that he can learn from:
Shit preseasons/camps
Not panicking to change the whole D structure.

That said, the team has all of the advanced stats going for them but can't get any saves, likely this would turn around enough to finish respectably.

The organization not wanting to wait around for him to learn from his mistakes is fine in a vacuum. The organization not wanting to wait, while saying we are "win now", have zero roster flexibility, less than zero goaltending, and replacing him with a coach with zero experience is what makes it not fine.

If you're going to cut bait like this on a good but developing coach, you need to bring in a hard ass vet like Torts. No reason to hire a development project coach when you already have a good one at home. Paul Coffey is just the OBC icing on the cake.

Classic Homer Simpson mystery box.gif.

Or they went through a slump.

You don’t think it appears that he’s hiring his friends or it appears to be nepotism? Seems pretty clear to me.

We won’t know if his decisions are good for awhile. Maybe they are.
